Whilst I'm no great fan of McDonalds'. I see in their latest advertising campaign, they are making great play on their recycling and in this particular case their use of "used" cooking oil to create bio diesel. So it IMO would not be to great a problem to do some more research into using it to fire a steam engine. Which in turn is a sacrifice I'd be prepared to make in order to keep them running.......

Easier to use it in any diesels the lines have.

If a Steam loco boiler was pre heated with an element or a kind of shore supply of boiling pressurised water for the boiler and tender at the start of the day how large would a battery pack be required in a second tender to keep a steam engine steaming. Could it do multiple grand Central trips for example. Always wondered.

About 30 years ago the Swiss/Austrians built a batch of rack railway tanks with a pre heat element in their boilers. Which meant they could be plugged into the electric mains over night and at a set time powered up warming/pre-heating the boilers. They were fitted with all the usual safety features to stop the boilers boiling dry etc.

I think there will always be an educational role for heritage railways, but I’m sure that it will become increasingly difficult to attract younger visitors in the near future, as most people under say 80 years of age are much more aware of the environmental impact of consuming fossil fuels.

My son started Beavers this week, they had a camp fire outside to toast marshmallows (link to bonfire night) and I heard one of the kids saying it wasn’t good for the environment to be burning and letting out all the smoke!
