Brighton to Great Malvern

Well if you do the journey you'll arrive in a beautiful part of the world If rural walking is your thing, then a visit to the Malvern Hills is a must. Seriously, it's worth doing and I need to go back there myself.

I have to say I wasn't aware of there being accommodation in such a place in Malvern Link, I always assumed it was a private residence. I've learnt something new!

Rural walking is very much my thing, and an os map is always to hand in my smartphone. I've heard good things about the Malvern hills so hiking would certainly be on the agenda.

Go a bit further on towards Hereford and you can stay in the old station at Stoke Edith (long closed) which is now a holiday let. You'd have to put up with the adajcent level crossing howling at you though. Hourly bus from Ledbury.

On the downside, you'll likely encounter me walking the dog nearby.

That sounds like an interesting add-on to the trip! As for encountering you and your pooch, well, nothing's perfect!

Really? I thought that was a private residence! I've been past too many times to count, and went by on a cycle ride ages ago to check it out from the road, looks like a nice place.

As for RSDonovan, if they carried on to Hereford they would risk bumping into me which could be scary I think that they're likely to do the trip, as the Malvern Hills are breathtaking, and I've attached a few photos to try and illustrate that from my 2019 visit.

Id recommend either Worcestershire Beacon, or a little further out, Caer Caradoc in Church Stretton.

14 minutes turnround at Great Malvern? How does it get onto the up line? I thought it would have have to continue to the Wells, or is there a crossover, or does it run wrong line?

A very quick sideways question here:

Regarding Stoke Edith station, I have seen comments a while ago as a possibility for reopening. As I believe it would be unlikely at any time in the near future, is this something that local councillors suggest whenever there is an election campaign going on so as to get some votes in the bag? (Apologies for the cynicism).

Not going to happen. They'd need to put a passing loop in, or redouble the section from Ledbury to Hereford.

My forum picture is actually taken in the field next to the old station. I've been walking around the Frome valley for years - Jura (the dog) loves the river Frome about half a mile away down the very quiet lane.

It does run out to Malvern Wells. Consequently the turnround is really tight, so it's not unusual for it to be terminated short at Worcester.

Plans do exist for a crossover at Great Malvern, so stock arriving in 1 offloacs/loads there before reversing out and crossing to the Up Line...
Which will probably come into fruition with the resignalling, planned in the 2040s!
