Indeed. I can remember one Sunday where we shut the whole network down due to bad weather. Not many people remember that!
Whilst the storms took place on a Sunday, if I rightly recall, the decision to shut down the entire SE rail network in the middle of the morning rush hour actually took place on Monday 30th October 2000, if I rightly recall. Trains proceeded at a crawl to the next station along the line and then terminated wherever they were.

I’m talking more recently than that, and it was the whole network. Autumn 2002 IIRC.

Yes, I recall that day quite clearly, no trains anywhere at all.

And those who gleefully jumped in their cars to avoid the awful rotten railways ended up in numerous crashes, smashes and tailbacks.
Because the road network is just as vulnerable when things really get bad.
