When I used to do them (before they were ruined by the morning restrictions) I would never put them through a barrier - in fact I would leave them in my ticket wallet and flash the wallet at the gateline / on-train staff. If I didn't leave it in the wallet, I kept getting the ticket clipped or marked by clueless staff.

I suppose things have changed since then, though. Roll on e-tickets for rovers, once it eventually gets enabled.

They are available on PRT so you can just scan the barcode.

Does it actually work the barriers with any reliability though?

According to the a poster on an earlier thread Britrail M-Passes using barcodes don't.

I had an ALR on bog roll earlier this year and bizarrely it only worked at London Marylebone.

Dishonorable mention to staff at London Liverpool Street, London Waterloo and Southend Victoria though who told me that I obviously didn't have a valid ticket due to it not working.

It really is pathetic (although not at all unexpected) that any staff, never mind those at such major stations would be so wilfully ignorant of their jobs.

Mustn't forget the back office staff apparently incapable of programming the barrier systems to correctly identify valid tickets, the excuse with the mag-strip that there is not enough space for the data no longer applies to the optical codes but the exact same issues still occur and paying customers are routinely treated to this sort of nonsense.

It does still apply when the barriers are using the same logic for both types of ticket.

Unbelievable. If I was being unkind I might suggest these people would struggle to rub two brain cells together....

I do find it very frustrating that some staff react to things they don't know r.e tickets in a 'Oh, if I don't know it must be invalid ', or invent their own rules. Ridiculous mindset to have.

That is not uncommon.

The incident with Geoff Marshall and his ALR at Blackpool North spring to mind, but a not a shocker for BPN.

When was that and what happened? ALR rejected at the Blackpool North gateline, presumably?
I've had I think about and it maybe someone else- But for some reason I have Geoff on his 'All the Stations' trek stuck in my head about it.

Leeds used to have a reputation for its barriers swallowing everything but i don't know if it was deserved.

Personally I wouldn't risk a barrier with such a valuable ticket. I've had the barriers at BHM reject perfectly valid WM Day Rangers so it's just easier to go direct to the side gate ( staff issues mentioned here notwithstanding)

It’ll work barriers with the same reliability as putting a ticket through. So, hardly ever.

Fairly standard nowadays.

You say pathetic they say profitable.

It’s taught, if you’re not sure find in favour of the railway.
