Modern Locomotives Illustrated 195 states that the locos (referring to the whole class) were always painted BR black with the early Lion on a Wheel emblem. The Holyhead locos acquired a non-standard design of yellow and black wasp stripes and (possibly only at the radiator end) a wooden lower extension to the buffer beam.

On these small shunters, the 6-cylinder Gardner engine and the Wilson gearbox were the same as on the Crosville buses of the era at their Holyhead garage, so presumably there was some element of local support available.

Not exactly: the Gardner 6L3 engine used in rail applications was not the same beast as the 6LW/6LX/6LXB range which was common in buses.

Just came across my 1964 edition "Observers book of Railway Locos" and D2953-D2956 are listed as being at Stratford and originally numbered 11503-11506
There's a monochrome photo of 11504 in what is presumably all-black with a pale door, no yellow or stripes on the nose
So what happened to the other two?

The same book lists ED6 as being at Castleton PW depot, alongside ED5

The early 08's were also built with wooden doors. As to the livery it was the original BR black and I believe these were the only locos still in Black to recieve TOPS numbers
I believe 08 105 from Carlisle was still in black when renumbered. There is a picture of it in the 1975 Ian Allen Combined Volume. I saw the 01's in August 1976 and they were definitely black...

In the book 'BR: From Green to Blue' there's a picture from 1974 of 08 039 at Willesden in black livery, however its TOPS number is only chalked on and it's withdrawn anyway. Its painted number is still D3052 but it's in 1950s Gill Sans style with a small 'D'. (The photo caption mentions 08 105 as surviving in black until 1975.) The same book has a photo of 01 002 from 1979 with confirmation that it's in black livery.

That's how it was done for the 08 shunters, just the initial "1" replaced locally by "D" in whatever stencil font the painter had to hand. But took a while. I seem to recall 13183, should be D3183, a regular shunting Bristol TM Goods depot next to the old station, still in its original incarnation in 1962.
