EMT: No trains between Sheffield-Liverpool via Manchester on 3rd December due to "difficult weather conditions" (no disputing that, obviously);

However, TPE have announced that their services between Sheffield and Manchester have resumed (big banner at the top of their website.)

Why the discrepancy? Why has one TOC decided it's safe to run but another hasn't? That line is overcrowded enough as it is; tomorrow will be unbearable with one train per hour, especially if 2-car 170s turn up.

It's not just a case of weather but also other factors.

Northern and TPE are able to stable units either side of the Pennines. If EMT send a service to Liverpool and it snows again and it's unable to return to Nottingham via Sheffield than EMT have a problem. The solution would be for EMT Nottingham crews sign Stockport-Crewe so they can still return via Derby. EMT are also losing a lot of revenue by not providing a service on Liverpool-Warrington-Manchester (and likely severely overcrowding Northern and TPE services.)

An earlier post suggested the 142s coped with snow better than 158s, which has never proved the case before and is quite likely incorrect for the above reason.

I worked the last one back to Picc last night and it was that cold we had Ice inside the cabs (and by a miracle the cab heaters were working) sadly we lost an engine by the time we got to Dore, so had to go back to Sheffield and get another 142 and do it all again, not the best trip but we are stubborn at Northern we will keep going if possible lol

Latest from EMT Website:

Services on the following East Midlands Trains routes are planned to operate as normal, subject to alterations and delays. Routes include:

Nottingham to Matlock
Leicester to Nottingham
Nottingham to Mansfield Woodhouse (Reduced to one train an hour, no trains will operate between Mansfield and Worksop)
Lincoln to Peterborough
Derby to Crewe
Nottingham to Lincoln via Newark
Norwich to Liverpool (via Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester is now fully operating)

As a result of the difficult weather conditions, no trains are able to run between the following locations on Friday 3 December:

Lincoln to Grimsby/Cleethorpes
Lincoln to Doncaster
Mansfield Woodhouse to Worksop

Thanks for that. The reason I asked is that Mrs. Bungle is travelling over that route today and, although she has a reserved seat, I'm concerned about how overcrowded it might be. In view of the disruption, and the fact that Doncaster-Cleethorpes is still suspended, is there a chance they might double up units between Doncaster and Manchester Airport (particularly in the case of the 170s?)

The information about EMT Norwich-Liverpool now operating is new, it wasn't there when I posted last night; however, Live Departure Boards still show them terminating at Sheffield, so I don't know which information is more accurate.

Although the EMT website does say that the Norwich-Liverpool route is now fully operating, the live departure boads still show this service as only running between Norwich and Sheffield.

I know that there has been a lot of snow in the north of Nottinghamshire but I am surprised that the service between Nottingham and Worksop still is not running north of Mansfield for the 3rd day running. EMT seem to have been badly disrupted.

1810 to Manchester Piccadilly has been cancelled. My Dad has been working in Sheffield, first train in was fine, now has to wait for the 1914 and he'll be home at about 2030 now and not 7pm :/
