Just made it through the interview and psychometrics for a Driver position in Manchester with Northern, if anyone needs any help or advice don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks very much, applied for a position that came up in August, usually it takes a few months but the recruitment team kept me updated throughout the screening process.

Does anyone know how strict Northern are with the 45 minute commute to depot? I’m currently in Rotherham 1:20 hours away, but would be willing to relocate? I’m guessing it would be an instant rejection at the application screening process as I’m too far away at the moment, does anyone have any experience of this? (Or have any knowledge as to when sheffield might have recruitment coming up?)

Thanks, Carly

Congratulations - that’s brilliant :)

I’ve been keeping an eye out for driver positions but didn’t even see the August advert - fingers crossed for this round.

applications would not be considered if they do not meet the criteria for the role.

sheffield wont be advertised for the longest of times.

Unfortunately they are strict, so it’s unlikely you will progress I’m afraid

I got the rejection email too unfortunately, but it says Application under review, not Application unsuccessful, is that normal?
Absolutely gutted I thought it was a good application.

If you have had an interview with Northern before and failed, would you be considered for another interview, or would you just be wasting your time?
I had an interview early on in 2019 for a driver position and failed miserably, nerves got the better of me :'(. I have applied for several different positions over the last few years and haven't got past the application process, just wondering if that could be the reason why.

Not to be a person who is gloating, but with Northern I have applied for several positions.

There's been the rejection emails. Emails to say I've made it to assessments and even congratulatory emails to say I've made it into a talent pool. I've even had to reinterview for a role only to fail it after passing the first time.

Long story short, I've had countless applications but I've finally made it to the medical stage.

Don't give up. Take notes on your past applications, read through the questions and your answers.

I strongly believe in getting experience for interviews. Practice plenty of mock ones with random people if you can. And even take notes with you into your interview, I'm not talking a full blown essay, but a note book with a few things on.

Then when you get the chance. Apply to every TOC you can.

You only fail when you give up

Absolutely second this!

It can be easier said than done, but don’t let rejection squash your dreams! If you were unsuccessful after an interview I’m sure Northern would be happy to provide feedback, and this way you can understand where you can improve and work on this. Mock interviews is a really good practice tool, and also preparing beforehand. Think of examples you could give in your interview, plan these - make bullet point notes to help you remember in the interview if you’re prone to being nervous.

Keep on going, have confidence and faith in your abilities and it will eventually pay off!

I come from a background of nothing to do with the railway.

But there are things you can tailor to the questions.

Folllowing rules and procedures, team work and even lone working.

It's all in day to day life we all live.

Driving a car is a great example (I don't even drive, so obv didn't use it as an example). But just make sure you have safety at the forefront of your mind when answering.
