On a train...somewhere!
Not a good day for any of the TOCs, except perhaps TPE who managed to run to time this afternoon.

GC particularly bad. 1A60 / 1N26 delayed heavily but N26 left only around 10late thanks to an extra quick turnaround at London. All other trains have been cancelled other than 1N28 (start from York) and A63 which is shown on the wesbite as terminating at York, allowing the set to work N28 back North.

The snow has caused chaos all over the region which seems a little ridiculous seeing how they manage in other countries!!

Hmm. According to NRE, Larkhall trains are still running tomorrow. I kinda hope so considering I need to use them. Now I need to check to see if the other routes I need to use are working properly!

More snow and freezing conditions are forecast for tonight (Monday).
Although the heaviest falls are expected in Scotland and the north of England, the south won't be spared both snow and sub-zero temperatures.

The consequences leading to rail disruption tomorrow will be multiplied by any 'wrong' final locations of stock and crews after today's disruption (which has mainly affected services in the north and, of course, long-distance routes which serve the north).

I must admit east coast at least attempted to revise the timetable and diagrams but I am sure failures and bigger delays than planned have messed things up. But I was surprised XC didn't. They must have trains and crews all over the place. If east coast are running 80mph north of York XC will need to as they follow east coast trains with very little space between in timetable terms.

Train was about 30 mins late into Stirling, and was terminated there, but a bus had already been arranged to Bridge of Allan and Dunblane.
I was getting back from Stirling on the bus today rather than going from BofA as I wasn't on my bike.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

I was on the 1533 Dunblane train, and it was a 3 car Turbostar.
I noticed the next one was cancelled at Larbert where I could see the platform info boards from the train.

Oh god, I wouldn't fancy getting a bus up to Dunblane in lieu of the train. As I understand it, the gritters have still to enter the City.

Why is everything terminating at Stirling instead of going up the hill? The Perth services are still calling at Dunblane as normal - so the line is open.

The train I was on terminated because of late running and apparently something failed in front of us between Larbert and Stirling.

The snow up that way is really bad. The A9 was/is closed, and my brother is stuck in Gleneagles Hotel (lucky git). Obviously, Scotrail won't want to send units up that way if they don't need to. The hourly to Aberdeen will have to suffice.

As for the gritters, according to Scotrail the bus isn't actually able to get to the station because the roads are so bad

I tried to get to Leeds today. My set failed at Alnmouth so gave up at Newcastle and returned north. Scotrail surprised me. I think they are either having problems getting train crew which is understandable considering the conditions. But the amount of short sets is my shock. Either they have a lot of failures or some bad planning. Many 3 coach sets on the reduced Edinburgh - Glasgow line. 2 cars on the Stirling line following cancelations are both resulting in severe overcrowding. Surely the can keep Edinburgh to Glasgow 6 car.

I had some bad luck. Went for 1515 glasgow but was only 3 car so could physically board. Went for the 1534 stirling service 2 car 158 last 2 cancelled. Got passed between Waverley and Haymarket by empty 6 car 1545. I guess it was empty as by then it was only 10 minutes behind the 1515.

Haha i was on that 1545 from Waverley and saw your 158 , we actually picked up a fair few at Haymarket . Yeah the 1515 was 20 mins on leaving . Yeah overcrowding is a problem on the EDI - GLA shuttle , last weekend i was squeezed on a 3 car 170 after the rugbby.

Did a couple of local journeys at the weekend out of Durham (to Great Ayton on Sat and Newcastle on Sun) and East Coast/Cross Country train times were all over; luckily it made little difference for the local trips. Was impressed (once again) with Northern Rail: there had obviously been an early delay on the Esk Valley line and the guard must have worked at least three end to end trips with little or no break as they made up the time.

As for today, the revised timetable was a rough guide to what was running, but the lave train times system essentially failed in the North East today. Understandable I guess!

Eh? :?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

I think you may have been looking at something else, as it was defintately a Turbostar. It left from platform 13.

Im pretty sure there was an 156 and a 4 car Bathgate 158 on 13 when i was on the 1545 to Queen St.

In attempts to keep the ECML running, there are additional de-icing trains out, and some points have been locked in 'normal' (eg Dunbar station is locked out).

EastCoast:
the special "snow" timetable (see first post), 'will apply until further notice'.

Scotrail: running much as yesterday (see first post), including:
- Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh reduced service (running at 00 and 30 minutes past the hour from Queen Street and at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour from Waverley)
- Glasgow Queen Street to Cumbernauld not running.

South East:
- Between Ramsgate and Dover Priory Reduced and delayed services.
- Between Dover Priory and Faversham via Canterbury East: Trains may be delayed by up to 60 minutes
- Between Faversham and Gillingham: Trains are running with delays up to 90 minutes.
- Between Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells: Trains may be delayed by up to 40 minutes.
plus other cancellations at short notice

Southern:
a revised timetable for Wednesday on the Sussex routes with many services on these routes NOT running:
Barnham - Portsmouth Harbour
Barnham - Bognor Regis
Bognor Regis - London Victoria
Brighton - Southampton Central
Brighton - Hove
Brighton - West Worthing
Brighton - Three Bridges

Met Office said:
Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Snow flurries for many on Thursday. Drier for many on Friday but outbreaks sleet or snow probably spreading erratically into western parts on Saturday. Remaining very cold. Severe overnight frosts

Outlook for Sunday 5 Dec 2010 to Tuesday 14 Dec 2010:
Remaining cold in the north at first, often dry and bright but with wintry showers at times. It will turn windy in the southwest with rain, turning to sleet and snow, spreading erratically northeastwards into central parts of the UK. The snow may be heavy at times, especially from the Midlands northwards and also over high ground. This is likely to give further accumulations with blizzards possible at times. Towards the end of next week, outbreaks of rain sleet and snow are likely to clear away and be replaced by sunnier spells with occasional wintry showers. It is likely to be rather cold with overnight frosts. Perhaps become drier by the end of the forecast period.

That's only the tip of the iceberg with Scotrail! A huge number of services in the Strathclyde and Central areas are subject to delays and cancellations.

Yesterday it was only Monday to Thursday. Best to check tomorrow or Thursday itself, conditions don't look like improving so I'm very confident the normal Friday/Sat/Sun timetables will be revised.

Two trains that I know of have failed in the current weather have failed due to ice build up which has then broken of and hit the brake pipes damaging them. Is there anything that can or should be done to prevent this problem?

Services between Derby and Chesterfield seem to be grinding to a halt - leaving Derby near enough on time, but many services getting into Chesterfield between 70-90 mins late.

All buses in Sheffield taken off the road. Over a foot in my back garden!!

Signal fault near Chesterfield is causing that.

Wouldnt want to be working for Network or National Rail right now with all these problems

1819 and 1830 King's Cross - Newcastle both cancelled!
The 1900 is busy enough as it's the first train to allow SSRs.

The 1900 is going to be absolutely packed solid! They'll have to declassify first class.

Given that the 1835 calls Peterborough & Newark and the 1903 calls Peterborough it should at least be fast to Doncaster (and pick up only there I'd say!)

A BBC reporter was on the 2130 Kings X to Leeds service, and passengers were being told that all onward connections to
Lincoln from Newark NG were cancelled, both road and rail.

The only option given to them was to bed down in the station!

I gather that Lincoln was gridlocked with traffic due to heavy snowfall last night, with people stuck in traffic jams for over 5 hours.

FCC website is now reporting an amended service on the Thameslink route with no through running due to snow fall south of London.

North of london services from Bedford/Luton will terminate at St Pancras.

Brighton services all terminate a London Bridge or city Thameslink.
Is says that passengers south of London are advised not to travel.

Normal service on the GN route.

Out of interest, how many stand alone snowploughs do we have on the railway these days? I remember last winter watching the film about the snowplough on the NER somewhere near Darlington (could be Staindrop), they were clearing snow away from the line and doing their best to rescue a train.

BBC News had a story about people having to sleep on a station last night between Newark and Lincoln.

I think there is a snowplough kept in a siding near Peterborough station.
