Buses in London Transport Museum

There's two buses in the museum that people here may be familiar with that has the reg 737 DYE and NXP 997, what types were they and where did they see regular use?

NXP997 is an AEC ‘RT’ type, basically an AEC Regent III chassis heavily modified to London specification and with bodywork by Park Royal. Its fleet number is RT4712. It saw service at many London garages including Upton Park, Catford, Seven Kings, Elmers End, Walworth, New Cross and Thornton Heath.

737DYE is an AEC ‘Routemaster’ semi-integral also built to London specification. It also has Park Royal bodywork and its fleet number is RM1737. It also moved around a bit - entering service at Cricklewood, it also saw service at New Cross, Middle Row, Alperton, Turnham Green, Tottenham and Dalston.

Definitely there two or three years ago - you were able to sit in the driver's seat and 'drive'. As you say, it was just the front part, up to just past the front wheels.

Is that the double decker bus that has the iBus console so you could change the destination on the front? You can't currently change the destination on the front but you could previously however you can hear it announce verbally the destination.

Don't think so - I certainly was not aware of it.

This was a real bus, new to East Thames Buses in 2002 as their VWL5, but was written off after a fire. The front section was probably all that was salvageable.

On the subject of mockups, does the Optare Metrorider cutaway still exist?

I'm certain I would have travelled on RT4712, as I went to school on a TL (Catford) RT bus for seven years, and also used New Cross (NX) buses very regularly on routes 21,89 and 182. It would have been nice if it had been allocated to Old Kent Road (P) before most of its buses were transferred to NX on its closure, in view of its registration plate!
