Edinburgh and Glasgow Spotting Tips

Hi

Just booked three days in Scotland for late October.

Flying (wash my mouth out) into Edinburgh and out of Inverness. Lots of lines I need to cover in the central belt on the first two days if I can, but any tips and tricks for 'must see, must do, good workings, places to spot etc?

Thinking of getting the three day rover ticket for the central area, and will be staying somewhere near Waverley.

Third day will be a run up to Aberdeen and then over to Inverness for the 1800hrs flight home.

Thinking in terms of best stations to be at for certain times of the day (I collect numbers in addition to line) I also like to video.

If the ticket is valid on the sleeper in the evening between Dalmuir or similar and Edinburgh, that would be on my list to do

Sadly these days the Fort William sleeper doesn't act as a day train between Glasgow/Edinburgh & Fort William.

For stations for units, probably Glasgow Central (remember to sign in), Hyndland & Queen Street. Edinburgh end the best will be Edinburgh station itself, but it's a bit of a maze.

I'd suggest trying to go on one of the Edinburgh-Glasgow via Cumbernauld services (if there still running; I'm sure I saw at least one when I was up there last week), as ScotRail is proposing to withdraw the service after the December timetable change, meaning that if you wanted to travel over this particular route in the future you'd have to change at least once.

A run over the Forth and Tay Bridges is an absolute must, but your third day plan covers them ! Hopefully your chosen train will be a Scotrail HST. However, don't make Sunday travel part of your schedule.....

And an EMU trip between Motherwell and Cumbernauld will take you past Motherwell TMD, through Mossend Yard and past Coatbridge FLT.

Thanks all…. My EDI to Aberdeen train seems to be booked as an HST but normally works as a unit. It’s the 0729.

What’s the craic with checking in at Glasgow Central.

Is there any visibility of Millerhill EMU Yard from the outside? I note that not all of the 385 fleet is needed on a daily basis and this location is likely to be where any spares are kept.

Presumably a walk from Newcraighall or Shawfair but can anything actually be seen?
