Christmas and New Years Service

Is there any info about services during these periods on TFL? I'll be working on Christmas Eve/Day and New Year's Eve/Day so hopefully I'll be able to commute.

Xmas Day itself is usaually just a tiny, tiny, handful of buses I'm afraid.

New Year you shouldn't have any problem, or Xmas Eve up until mid to late evening.

TfL usually produce and publicise a comprehensive Christmas/New Year travel booklet (and the on-line equivalent) but I can't remember from previous years how far in advance it appeared. Doesn't seem to be anything yet for 2010/11 on their website. Look out for it in leaflet racks and information points at Underground and Overground stations etc.

The leaflet hasn't been delivered to stations yet, so won't be on display for now.

You certainly won't have any problems New Years Eve, as TfL run an all-night service.

I'm not aware who's sponsoring the free travel this year, but I am pretty sure it's going ahead seeing as I was given instructions regarding powering down gatelines.

If I remember rightly, the service closes down slightly early on Christmas eve, there's no service on Christmas day, and a limited service on Boxing day, and a full service through the night on New Year's Eve thru New Year's Day.

Will I be able to get from Chesham to Upminster on Boxing Day? I know the met is always suspended north of Ricky on Boxing days, but I can cycle there - what about the district?

I was reading the draft version the other day and it mentioned closedown of LU by 2400 Christmas Eve (generally) with a Sunday service on Boxing Day, but with a later start up (8-9am). No doubt a few stations will be closed on Boxing Day too.

There have not been TfL buses on Christmas Day for as long as I can remember, there were a few special service routes run in central London only in more recent years. Boxing Day has most buses running a Sunday service with a later start up.

Even where I live in the countryside, in the next town up, there is Christmas Day bus every 30 mins - well there is an airport!

As Daniel has already said, Boxing Day (26th) services are liable to disruption because of the ASLEF dispute.

IF trains run a modified Sunday service will operate. First trains will run from about 08.30 in the central area with last trains at Sunday times:

Metropolitan Line:
Will run a service from Amersham, Chesham, Watford and Uxbridge direct to Baker Street. There will however be no service between Baker Street and Aldgate.

Circle Line:
No service between Hammersmith and Moorgate. Special service Moorgate – Edgware Road via Liverpool Street and Victoria.

Hammersmith & City Line:
No service between King’s Cross and Barking. Reduced service King’s Cross – Hammersmith.

District Line:
No service between Plaistow and Dagenham East. Reduced services on the rest of the line except Edgware Road – Kensington (Olympia).
A Rail Replacement Bus Service will operate as follows:
Plaistow – Upton Park – East Ham – Barking – Upney – Becontree – Dagenham Heathway – Dagenham East.

Waterloo & City Line:
No service.

Bakerloo, Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria:
No restrictions.

The booklet is now out (white cover with Rudolf the roundel-nosed reindeer on the front). Got one at Kings Cross Underground (racks by east ticket office) last night.

New this year, megabus are running a handful of services to/from London on Christmas Day. As is typical with megabus it's pretty much impossible to find timetables except by searhing on the site for a particular journey (annoying as it won't suggest anywhere nearby if there's no service to the place you've picked). There's 1 to/from Sheffield/Wooley Edge/Leeds/Newcastle and one to/from Reading/Swindon/Bristol/Newport/Cardiff and from London only Coventry/Birmingham/Manchester/Bolton/Preston. All seem to be 20 or 25 pounds - but as the only form of long-distance public transport might be seen as reasonable (especially as it's 25 to Oxford via Heathrow on the Oxford Tube). There's also a couple on non-London services (e.g. Leeds - Birmingham)

However it does look as if parts of the megabus network are closing down from Dec 23rd-Jan 4th.

Yes the booklets are now out and are available at stations, however, the ASLEF strike has come back with a yes to strike, (9 to 1!), so be warned, the service on the 26th will not be as advertised!
