Hi all, thank you for reading. Does anyone know if the GWR prosecution send letter via Royal Mail? I am expecting a letter from them but I have just moved to a new address. I am not sure if Royal Mail redirection would work for this letter? Any help would be appreciated.

All "last mile" letter delivery is done by Royal Mail, so I would expect it will.

Yes - during the period when some other postal companies were allowed to (and - selectively - attempted to) do end-to-end deliveries, the fact the redirection would no longer work was yet another reason why the free-for-all was absurd. (The immediately obvious initial problem being that the other companies weren't up to it, and lots of mail was failing to get through - a neighbour had their phone cut off because BT paperwork never reached them - besides the obvious environmental and organisational inefficiency of having several differently coloured vans going round doing the same job every day which could easily be done by just one.)

But since everyone else has abandoned "last mile" delivering, then the normal RM redirection should be OK these days. (Though the increasing use of "courier" companies to sometimes be used to deliver even letter-sized items in some situations can still occasionally undermine this.)

However, it takes a few days before a redirection 'kicks in', this is explained by Royal Mail when you pay for the service, so you need to find a way to check for any post if you have moved a few days ago up and to the point when the redirection actually starts happening. If you want to find a way to check that it is working, post letters to yourself at your old address, with a number on the envelope or some such code that you devise, once a day if needs be, and see when they start arriving at the new address the post has been re-directed to. Of course that might be considered a bit extreme and is probably not required, esp if you can access the old address in some way.

Based on what happened last time I set up redirection order (around eighteen years ago) the first thing they do is send a letter to your old address to check that it is not someone trying to steal your post; I think they still do this. Have you had such a letter? If not, it may have been returned and Royal Mail have not brought the redirection order in to force.

I don't think this happens any more. I think they simply send a letter to both old and new addresses confirming a postal redirection has been set up, and if that is unexpected to contact them. I've done it several times in the last few years and I've never received a letter I have to respond to.

The last time I set up a redirection, not so many years ago, they did send a confirmatory letter to the old address which you had to respond to before the redirection took effect; which seemed to me a sensible precaution on their part. Otherwise anyone could arrange for your post to be intercepted. It did mean that you should set it up before you move and want it to start - either that or you need to have access to your old address for a while after the move, until the redirection kicks in.

One of the points they make is
  • We need at least 5 working days' notice to arrange your Redirection
A few years ago, I used the service and it took rather longer than five days. Royal Mail's response was that they couldn't guarantee a time that it would be done by. Because of a delay in the paperwork, I only knew about my move just over a week before it happened, which proved to be not long enough (and missed at least one unexpected letter as a result). Too late for you now, sorry, but I would give them as long as possible.

Yep, agree with this, but I think if done on line it may be that it all happens quite quickly.

Thanks for that, I'll bear that in mind (although I think my next move will be to where I suspect Royal Mail don't deliver). I wasn't certain how the OP had arranged his redirection.

I set up redirection earlier this year and you need to nominate an effective date and this needs to be at least 14 days after when you set it up (eg if you set it up today on Saturday 28th August the earliest it can start is Saturday 11th September). Royal Mail send out an initial confirmation letter to the old address with confirmation before the start date and then a further letter after the start date to the new address

Useful, they have firmed this up since I used it. The five days I quoted in #9 is from Redirection - Get Mail to Your New Address | Royal Mail Group Ltd and is still current.

With the surge in house moving with the stamp duty holiday, they were a bit swamped at the Royal Mail redirection centre in sunny Stoke. With stamp duty now back it's starting to settle down, but it's not set up till the date they confirm its set up.
Worthy of note, is that some letters can't be redirected. Usually benefit letters, but also the NHS increasingly use this too. It can be that prosecutions departments decide to do this, although I can't see any advantage to them, but you never know.

On Monday I put in the application form for a redirection starting at the end of this month (I put it in early because of the Royal Mail’s current travails: I got two weeks post - including two issues of the fortnightly Private Eye - in one go (actually, it took three goes to get it all through the letter box) on Wednesday). Today I received two letters from the Redirection Team: one addressed to me by name and one addressed to Occupier. As all details are correct, no further action is required.
