I've been looking up the times on Virgin and Euston - Preston - Ormskirk seems a good route but I cannot find any trains returning from Ormskirk - Preston.

Im travelling out on a 11 Dec and returning on 12 Dec.

Your other option would be to travel London - Preston - Ormskirk on the Saturday then return Ormskirk - Liverpool - London on the Sunday

I'd take - for example:

1150 Depart Ormskirk
1218 Arrive Moorfields

1231 Depart Moorfields
1233 Arrive Liverpool Lime Street

1248 Depart Liverpool Lime Street
1501 Arrive London Euston

You can do this journey virtually every hour on a Sunday, leaving at xx50 and arriving in London 3h11m later! :D

You could also travel through Moorfields to the next stop (Central) and walk the couple of minutes from Central to Lime Street... I always find that much easier. Also is there a megatrain on those days from Lpool to Euston? I can't check on my phone...

Not quite sure where the OP is based, but as his journey originates in Euston, I'm guessing he's not from the Merseyside area.

I picked the Moorfields option as if you don't know where you're walking, the direct train to Lime Street is much easier.
