Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

1. Retail items sealed inside tough plastic that is almost impossible to open without some form of knife or other hand tool.

2. Huge plastic sacks shoved through my letterbox with monotonous regularity by "charities" (or pretend-charities) -- and they NEVER collect unused sacks, thereby creating more plastic waste than several years' worth of shopping.

Not a problem, can't possibly use them all for recycling old clothes, and so, in my household, they save on buying swing bin liners! ;)

I’d ban news programmes asking random people on the street what they think about a certain subject.
It adds nothing, especially as they often don’t seem to have a clue what they’re talking about.

99.99% of the time I agree wholeheartedly with this. The 0.01% of the time you get lovely stuff like this:

I would ban adverts that attribute human traits to things that don't have them.

As an example until one buys me a pint, I don't believe in "friendly bacteria" and have no intention of buying a yoghurt to find some. Similar to "Ribena Toothkind".

Food packaging where you try to peel the clear film off the top but all it does is peel a 1mm strip around the edge instead, meaning you have to open it with a knife anyway…
This is the strongest case yet for activation of the Like function on this site.
With the exception of Jenny Agutter in The Railway Children. That emotional scene near the end of the film where her father steps off the train and appears in a cloud of steam at the end of the platform and she runs towards him shouting ‘Daddy my Daddy’.
Yeah, I'll allow that in my benign dictatorship- it does make my eyes a bit damp! ;)

Wasn't she actually aged about 20 when she made that? ;) She's still regularly seen round and about in West Cornwall, incidentally.

Jenny Agutter (born late 1952) would have been 17 whilst appearing as Roberta Waterbury when the 1970 film version of "The Railway Children" was filmed.

Sally Thomsett, playing the younger 11 year old sister (Phyllis Waterbury) in the film, was however 20 years old in real life at the time of filming.

It's infuriating!

I enjoy things like Gogglebox, where you get a flavour of how other families are watching their telly, that can be entertaining - but I hate the way that news programmes do it - especially as it tends to be a reporter walking around a fairly deserted marketplace in some Brexitty place (Grimsby, Stoke), where the only people around at ten o'clock on a Tuesday morning are pensioners, so the town looks like it's represented only by that demographic of people (reinforcing the idea that other people will have about the place - there are young professional types, there are people with a variety of viewpoints, but such people are generally working at that time of the day, so the rest of the UK thinks that your town's only population is rent-a-quote pensioners

(what I'd find more interesting would be a current affairs version of Gogglebox, where we watch the same people reacting to political news each week - we'd be able to see how their opinions change over time - we'd get a balance of different backgrounds/ viewpoints - we'd find that some people are quite open/tolerant on some subjects but quite reactionary on others - we'd find that some people who's views chimed with ours on some stuff had very different opinions on other things - it might encourage people to see beyond their echo chambers - I don't mind listening to the views of other people - I like to keep abreast of what my "opponents" on a subject believe and sometimes it's enough to get me to change my mind - what I object to is the way that the Vox Pops tend to focus only on the low hanging fruit of "sticking a microphone in front of someone going into Wetherspoons in the morning" which reinforces stereotypes about how certain provincial places are populated)

Builders merchants where every time you go in it’s a completely different price for exactly the same thing and it obviously depends on what side of the bed the person serving you got out on…

A bit niche but - doing stuff to your model railway for a few hours and you’ve found the lid of your superglue but there’s no sign of the actual container. I mean where the hell is it? I’ve looked everywhere!

Are you sure you didn’t put it on the chair before you sat down? That is one place you can’t look.

On toilets, use of non-standard "Ladies" and "Gents" symbols, so you can't tell which is which.

Two caveats to this statement:
1) I wish we moved away from gender-specific toilets anyway
2) I do approve of the use of non-standard "Disabled" symbols (e.g. the one where the wheelchair user's arms are bent, to show them propelling themselves)

The watery liquid that comes out first when you open a new bottle of tomato ketchup. (I definitely haven't just had that in my roll and fried egg this morning :D)

What's wrong with gender specific toilets may I ask?

Judging by the state some Gents are left in I'm sure the Ladies wouldn't want to share.
From the things I’ve heard from female friends which I won’t repeat, women arn’t much better either!

Ive seen toilets before in London, which are not gender specific, but have male only, female only and non-specific cubicles. Whether people like it or not, this is probably going to be the future for many toilets.

What's wrong with non-gender-specific toilets, and if nothing, why does a gender distinction need to be the norm?
Less toilet space meaning more crowding- often women's toilets have long queues so instead of adding men to that maybe we should increase them instead. Urinals are convenient and Take less space even with partitions i guess but I suppose you don't neeeeed them. Also just an overall sense of being uncomfortable with being crowded in with the other genders while toileting- most gender neutral toilets have a single cubicle i think where this isn't a problem so doesn't mean gender neutral is always a no go. Just my opinion but there you go. Also in private toilets I know some sensitive topics are discussed where both parties wouldn't want to hear/be heard.

I would ban the gradual reduction of salt and sugar in foodstuffs to the point that they taste like cardboard.

Yes, we do know what you're up to and we can tell what you're doing.

As regard the first problem, one solution is instead of having separate male/female toilets, you have 1 each for urinals and cubicles. Obviously not as simple as just changing the labels on the doors but would be an option when premises are being built or refurbished.

Flushed with the success of this thread we seem to have disappeared down the toilet bowl recently…
Probably better get back on course before we have to put the ‘Engaged’ sign up…
Feel free to start a toilet based discussion if you want though. :)

Referring to an IP address as just an 'IP'. IP is the name of the protocol. not the address.

(Probably quite a niche one, only appling to those who are interested to some degree in computers)

I'd imagine Brenda from Bristol would agree with that. :D

Self service checkouts at supermarkets. They go wrong so often and have serious inbuilt attitude problems. I particularly hate the ones where you put the bag or your shopping in the wrong place and it gets all upset and you have to wait for a member of staff to help you out of the pickle you are in.
The ones in our local B&Q went wrong so wrong that they always had to have a member of staff to keep an eye on them. Now the self service checkouts have been got rid of altogether and replaced with standard checkouts with real members of staff.

Shops which display prices excluding VAT, but don't mention this anywhere. Or perhaps there's a sign like this: CHEAP STUFF (prices exclude VAT)

Isn't that illegal?

Give it a shake first, dear boy! ;)
