How could rail services be improved in the Manchester area?

Non-starter. Far too remote from the city centre, and introducing double-change for some cross-Manchester journeys (e.g. if you're doing something like Blackpool-Sheffield)
That doesn't matter. If we could simplify the lines through Manchester - eg CLC only runs to Castlefield. Eccles to Victoria platforms 3 and 4. Salford Crescent to Victoria platforms 5 and 6, Windsor Link and Ordsall curve abandoned, there would be more capacity on each route.

Interchange at Warrington for the CLC route so no Scotland to Manchester services. TPE only goes to Liverpool, perhaps with the Huddersfield stopper being the stopper from Manchester to Liverpool.

Except the huge demand on the Bolton corridor that wants to get to Castlefield. Demand from Bolton is the second highest flow to/from Manchester, after London, and needs to be spread around the city.

But we again come back to the point that there isn't (short of a Victoria re-build) capacity for these somewhere else.

The Airport is the "least worst" option.
Then you will ultimately drive people away from the railway. Direct services are always preferable and all you'd be doing is driving the capacity issue to Manchester Victoria, which was struggling to cope Pre-Covid with capacity issues. Nothing solved at all.
IMO, Victoria station (which has 4 through platforms) does not need to be rebuilt, but:
  • turn-back sidings would be needed east of Victoria for terminating trains from North Wales and the WCML.
  • Standedge line fast services not running through to Liverpool would need to be diverted via Guide Bridge to Piccadilly. I am aware that this would split the fast services from Leeds and beyond to 2 Manchester stations, but each service would still be every 30 minutes and it seems to me an acceptable compromise solution.

Is there scope for an out of town interchange for these long distance services. Somewhere around the point at which the Eccles line crosses the Windsor Link or around Salford. Trains from Scotland, Wales, Cumbria could all terminate there and passengers be carried into Manchester on local services, which could be extended in length for that purpose. Maybe even develop a Manchester Gateway around Warrington and only run trains on the CLC line over Castlefield.

But then where would all of the Piccadilly-bound trains from Bolton and Chat Moss go to and what would you replace them with? Surely Victoria couldn't handle them all.

If all trains from the North West (Blackpool, Cumbria and Scotland) go down the WCML to this new interchange at Warrington, then Bolton and Chorley would lose the connection not only with Castlefield but also with these points of origin, unless you send them all into Victoria.

I don't think that matters with longer-distance inter-city services.
I think it does given the volume of passengers who travel on the core TPE route. According to our latest internal management update, passenger numbers/revenue is at 60% of pre-covid *with* a reduced timetable, Airport travel significantly down and a major blockade ongoing.

Some people are in cloud cuckoo land of they think the manchester rail network is superior to metrolink. The Manchester rail network is absolutly atrocious and it doesnt serve the public as well as it needs to. Metrolink on the other hand has high frequency and does exactly what it needs to do. A 2 tph rail link is not befitting of somewhere the size of GM. I genuinely believe that the opposition to light rail on this forum is grounded in ideololgy rather than serving the public, as the rail network should.

Hence why HS2 and a link to Leeds and Liverpool is so important.

Ultimately if the raw number of paths through the system increases, this makes it more practical to allow margin to be put into the scheme to deal with out-of-order trains in the system.

Also scrapping the 156s and 158s in favour of 195s is going to be cheaper than most major infrastructural changes!

Correct - at the time the Bury line basically needed total renewal, and the Altrincham line was getting increasingly antiquated too.

Light Rail offers a frequency for short trips (where frequency generates demand, not "ambience" of the rolling stock) that heavy rail can't compete with, without consuming Central Manchester rail capacity, and takes folk into the city centre rather than the periphery and most of Manchester's stations do.
Anyone saying the Metrolink increased frequency on the Altrincham line is simply incorrect. The heavy rail frequencies in the peaks in the 1960s were higher than the highest Metrolink frequencies now, so they have not in that sense seen an improvement.
The railway is 100 times better as a transport system than the Metrolink is. The Altrincham and Bury lines are suffering to this day since their conversion to light rail. The railway has its faults but it can at least deliver a reasonably reliable service to a set timetable, unlike TfGM Metrolink, which seems to cancel trams and the whole service when they feel like it.

The Metrolink should never have happened, it causes chaos for road users in the city centre and has downgraded the service on lines which used to have trains running on them. If you want to run electric vehicles on the Atherton line then electrify it, along with Westhoughton, Southport and Kirkby.

We are in a situation where some lines (Chat Moss, Bolton, Blackpool) have been upgraded, some lines have been downgraded (Bury, Altrincham, Oldham Loop, MML north of East Didsbury) and some lines are still in effectively 1980s condition (Southport, Kirkby, Atherton, Westhoughton, CLC, Calder Valley, Huddersfield, Clitheroe, Rose Hill, Hope Valley, Mid Cheshire etc) which is a significant downgrade on how they ran before that. (Styal, Crewe, Macclesfield/Stoke and Hadfield/Glossop/Guide Bridge lines are effectively in 1990s condition which is sufficiently good to continue, but they have seen no improvements since privatisation)

The remaining unupgraded lines need to be brought up to the same standard as the lines which have recently been electrified and the interfaces between them upgraded to match, complete with electric replacements for Sprinters.
The problems of the 1980s persist on those heavy rail suburban lines that were not converted and are not used for longer-distance heavy rail services, hence the desire (?need) to convert the Atherton and ex-GC lines to SE Manchester to Metrolink.
The problems of the 1980s persist where the lines are still in 1980s condition. 142s still ran to Atherton and Kirkby until the very end. I visited Swinton station in the rain last year and found that I got less water on me when stood in the open than if I stood under the canopy.

Of course, Sheffield isn't an option due to crossing the Piccadilly throat. But the suggestions of cutting all direct Airport service to the Lakes, Scotland, Yorkshire and the North East is barmy.

In the 1960s there were more than10 trains per hour between Altrincham and Central Manchester?

Where did they terminate and where would capacity be found?

They can't easily take ETCS equipment, which is likely to be necessary for infrastructure improvements, and they have appalling performance.

Ultimately all this stock probably has to go to be replaced with 755s
But scrapping anything won’t help at all. The Barrow/Windermere services are 195s and those are some of the most frequently delayed. The infrastructure improvements are all that can save us at this point.

It would if the new trains have ETCS gear - and higher performance stock allows similar service levels to be maintained with fewer paths consumed by reducing the need for separate stopper and semi fast services, or semi fast and fast services.

The London Midland Region timetable dated June 1961 (accessed at Timetable World ) shows a peak service from Altrincham of 10 tph for arrivals between 0800 and 0900 at Manchester Oxford Road station and departure from that station between 1700 and 1800, some of which skip-stopped. This does not exceed the current frequency, but many of the trains had 6 carriages. However, the regular off peak frequency was only 3 tph then, and the core frequency on this line in the 1980s pre-conversion to Metrolink was only 4 tph. I have excluded the separate fast diesel services from Altrincham to Manchester Central from this comparison, as these still run (albeit at a lesser peak frequency) to Manchester Piccadilly via Stockport.

Manchester-Leeds-York is not "long distance"

The Generalised rail journey time must compete with the motorway.
Leeds - manchester travel is a nightmare. Slow rail journeys, or the horrid M62. Its only 44 miles.... :(

Travel between Manchester and Leeds is far easier and quicker than it was in the 1960s, with only an hourly train service (taking 70 minutes), although the class 124 Trans-Pennine dmus were comfortable, and without the M62. I recall travelling to Leeds on many occasions, by road typically using the bleak narrow Nont Sarah route (A640); on New Year's Eve 1962-3 we just managed to get through on the A62 with heavy snow falling and had to return via Todmorden 3 days later as all the other passes were blocked.

The problems in Manchester can partially be solved by just electrifying and resignalling in every direction from Manchester and the rest by quadrupling, redesigning junctions with grade separation and building a Picc-Vic tunnel.

There were 10 tph in peak periods to Oxford Road station, but the Castlefield line west of Oxford Road station was only used for the MSJ&A electric 1.5 kV DC trains then, plus occasional goods trains. [The section east of Oxford Road station had just been converted to 25 kV AC for use by the new Manchester south side electric trains from Oxford Road to Alderley Edge/Crewe via Stockport/Styal.] There were additional fast dmu trains (2-3 tph in the peaks, 1 tph off peak) from the CLC line, that terminated at Manchester Central.

Would it be desirable to divert one or both of the 4 TPE trains to Chester (in addition to the 2 LIverpools. not instead of one of them)? That would give Warrington BQ a direct service to Yorkshire, replacing the link that once existed from Warrington Central. I believe a TPE service from Yorkshire to Chester, calling only at Runcorn East between WBQ and Chester, would be more useful than the existing Leeds-Chester via the Calder Valley. The TfW service could be extended via Victoria to Stalybridge instead of the Airport. I entirely agree with you that as far as possible Calder Valley and Standedge trains should be kept to their own pairs of platforms at Victoria (5/6 and 3/4 respectively), with trains from the Calder Valley continuing beyond Manchester on the historic L&Y routes. I declare an interest, in that I often travel from Southport to Littleborough and Todmorden, and miss the direct trains, which now run only on Sundays.
I don't know how many paths are available on the Chat Moss line, but if the intention to divert Manchester-Scotland away from Wigan NW to run via Bolton goes ahead, that would release one path an hour.

Like it or not, people still have to drive to places sometimes; the train or the tram isn't convenient for everyone, ask people from Leigh or Worsley about this! The Metrolink increases traffic congestion in the city centre and thus pollution. The Metrolink is expensive and doesn't cooperate with Northern and other TOCs in relation to ticket acceptance when it should do. Example; people buying a ticket to Manchester stations from outside GM cannot use the Metrolink to traverse the city, they must pay more and buy a ticket from their origin to 'Metrolink city zone'. GM countycards are valid for buses and trains, so why not Metrolink as well?

It would've been better to have maintained the heavy rail service on the Bury and Altrincham lines with gradual improvements (new stock, more frequent service etc), rather than lumber it with substandard light rail stock which doesn't have toilets, is noisy and much more uncomfortable to travel in than a train is. The West Didsbury line should also have been restored to heavy rail as it was until the 1960s; connecting to the Midland line at Heaton Mersey and providing an alternative route towards Sheffield.
I don't remember the class 504 Bury EMU'S having toilets. The Bury line had a train at every ten minutes in the peaks .

You raise a good point. Certainly post TRU (without indication on NPR) with 4 fasts, 2 semi-fasts and 2 stoppers - Manchester's capacity will be stretched further. Chester to Yorkshire and beyond via TRU would be a viable option.

You could make that same argument for London Underground. No need for 7-car tube trains every 3 minutes off-peak, yet it would be stupid to take it away. The beauty of metro services is that you can depended upon it whenever you need it - you don’t need to plan your day around a timetable. The Manchester heavy rail network is absolutely shocking for a city of it’s size and anything that enables a minimum of 4 tph at all stations should be aimed for.

Look at Merseyrail - a far better network - and why shouldn’t Manchester also be seeing that on the Styal line or on the line to Bolton or the CLC? The excuse is given of “oh but the fast services for infrequent travellers is too important”, but like HS2 removes fast services in to London, Manchester should be seeking to remove TPE, EMR and TfW from as many lines as possible.

The problem then is, where do you terminate those services and would doing so just move the problem elsewheres? For instance, removing the EMR service entirely would have ramifications as far away as Norwich and there's no space to terminate them at Piccadilly, so that's also out of the question. The problem then is, where do you terminate those services and would doing so just move the problem elsewheres? For instance, removing the EMR service entirely would have ramifications as far away as Norwich and there's no space to terminate them at Piccadilly, so that's also out of the question. What would be best is to grin and bare an optimised timetable until HS2 reaches Manchester and then undertake a massive upgrade of all lines from Cheshire, Merseyside, Stafford, Yorkshire and the rest of Greater Manchester into Manchester to allow for stopping and express services to run side by side without hindering each other.

There is a false question or desire to see these issues solved before HS2 or NPR can be delivered, the problems in Manchester won’t be solved at all with the current infrastructure. Until then small changes might be made that eases bottlenecks but they will never deliver what the city really needs. In this context, the DfT Manchester consultation is a small change in the context of what is needed.

This is why we need to see fast Leeds services routed in to Piccadilly HS2. Let’s say we have the following infrastructure delivered over the next couple of decades:
  • HS2 phase 2b to Piccadilly
  • A short line heading east towards Leeds connecting to TRU via Huddersfield.
  • Tram-train conversion of the Atherton line.
  • Tram-train conversation of the Glossop-Hadfield and Rose Hill line (via Guide Bridge).
That would remove the following services from the off-peak:
  • 2 tph London via Stoke
  • 1 tph London via Crewe
  • 2 tph Birmingham via Stoke
  • 2 tph Leeds from Piccadilly P1-P4
  • 2 tph Leeds via Victoria from the airport
  • 2 tph Glossop & Hadfield from Piccadilly P1-P4
  • 2 tph Rose Hill from Piccadilly P1-P4.
  • 2 tph Wigan Wallgate via Atherton to Victoria (assuming the 3rd tph continues as heavy rail post tram-train)
All of those services apart from the two Leeds services that run around the ordsall chord are terminating trains, however it enables the following:
  1. The two Atherton terminator services can enable the Scotland and North Wales services to terminate at Victoria rather than travel through Oxford Road and the Styal line.
  2. Coupled with the removal of the two Leeds via Ordsall Chord services, the Styal line and the Castlefield corridor are relieved of 4 tph.
  3. Of the 5 services removed by HS2, we should expect at least 2 to remain as long-distance semi-fast. However that enables an additional stopper from Macclesfield & Stoke and an additional stopper from Crewe & Wilmslow. Plus an additional stopper from Hazel Grove. This would give Cheadle Hulme a 5 tph frequency, Hazel Grove 4 tph and Levenshulme & Heaton Chapel has turn-up-and-go frequencies.
  4. The Styal line then has the capacity to run as a 6 tph metro frequency
  5. Capacity is relieved at Piccadilly P1-8 and Castlefield to facilitate higher frequencies.
  6. Stations along the Atherton and Glossop & Hadfield and Rose Hill will see a minimum of 5 tph, some will see 10 tph.
These are the differences between communities having 1-2 tph or 4-6 tph. In my opinion more needs to be done on the WCML to enable big commuter areas like Bramhall to have a proper 4 tph frequency.
