I was enjoying a pint the other day in the pub at kidderminster station when I thought how many other railways offer a good pub either on a station or close at hand?:D

I rather like the Bankes Arms in Corfe Castle. The beer guarden banks onto the Swanage Railway, so it's a good place to chill out and watch the trains go by, pint in hand. *

* especially during the diesel gala in May (plug, plug...)

Spooners on Porthmadog platform. Station Tavern or Crossing Club at Grosmont. (Ask nicely for someone to sign you in at the latter, as it's a WMC).

Thumbs up for Spooners, there was a good range of real ale at the ELR pub on Bury Bolton St too.

Must be a popular railway for Alcies then.

The Boltmakers Arms, The Cricketers, The Globe and the Volunteer in Keighley, the Grouse at Oakworth, The Fleece and The Black Bull at Haworth. All great drinking pubs (not much grub on on offer, just Timothy Taylor's beers by the gallon). Grub and decent beer also at the Haworth Old Hall, but it's a bit pricier. Best fish and chips in the Aire Valley at Worth Valley fisheries almost opposite Ingrow station.

Get to the KWVR by train and stop at The Woolly Sheep at Skipton, or The Ferrands Arms and Brown Cow at Bingley, The Junction at Shipley, and the New Beehive in Bradford. Railways and beer: the perfect combo!

To me the obvious reply is the SVR but that's where you were! The Railwaymans Arms on Bridgnorth Station is also good especially the Bathams bitter.
You could always try the Black Lion at Consall on the Churnet Valley

May I suggest the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway in Derbyshire?

There are two Good Beer Guide pubs within five minutes walk of Wirksworth Station (The Royal Oak and the Hope & Anchor) while the remainder of the pubs in town (The Lime Kiln, The Blacks Head, The Royal Oak and the Wheatsheaf) all sell real ale and are well worth a visit.

At Idridgehay, the village pub languished as a none-too-successful gastropub until recently and has been taken over by new owners who have returned the handpumps to use and produced a menu that is within the budget of us mere mortals.

We shall be opening through to Duffield in April and at the end of what will be a nine-mile branch (with a cross-platform interchange to Matlock - Nottingham Services!) the village of Duffield has several good real ale pubs within easy reach.

There are two intermediate stations that will not open in April but are in our plans for the future. They are Shottle (Railway Inn, Marstons nearby) and Hazelwood (the Puss in Boots), so when we have them all open, we can honestly say that we have a decent pub within five minutes walk of all our stations!

Kind regards,

Neil Ferguson-Lee

The Bolton Arms, in Redmire village, about a ten minute walk from Redmire Station on the Wensleydale Railway was very good when I was there in the summer, they also did really great homemade food.

There are also some very good pubs in Whitby from the NYMR, eg, the
Jolly Sailors Inn, St. Annes Staith and next door to that is the Buck Inn, I have eaten and drunk in both and again food & booze was very good, these are on the same side of the river as the Station, walking towards the lighthouse & magpie fish eatery.

Corfe Castle station (on the swanage railway) has a cracking pub, and the beer garden has a brilliant view to the railway and station. I cant remember its name, I will edit this post when i find out its name.

The Worth Valley also holds an annual Beer and Music Festival. It is a superb event. There is a bar and entertainment on the platform at Keighley, a festival bar and lots of entertainment in the shed at Oxenhope amongst the engines, as well as bars on the steam-hauled trains which run all weekend. There is also plenty food available.

I have been the last couple of years and it is now a permanent date in my calendar.

At a guess and knowing the K&WVR it will be excellent beer and poor quality rock 'n' roll ;)
