Can anyone advise, please, whether it is possible to purchase a PlusBus ticket on arrival at a destination when travelling with a (valid!) Rail Rover ticket?

Specifically, I intend to have a 4 in 8 days North West Rover later this month. One day, I want to visit Leeds, and would benefit from a PlusBus ticket to get round the suburbs (pub crawl, if you must ask!). Is it possible to present my Rail Rover ticket at the Ticket Office in Leeds and purchase a PlusBus ticket for that day, please?

It will be down to the ticket office staff - technically speaking you can only get a PlusBus ticket for the origin or destination of your ticket. Obviously with a rover there isn't a defined origin or destination so some staff may refuse to sell you a PlusBus ticket.

Might be one that requires a bit of 'shopping around'.

Many thanks for the prompt reply.

Isn't that rather odd, though? Surely the sale of a ticket is either valid, or it isn't?

If it's valid, why would only some staff sell it?

If it's not valid, why might some [other] staff be prepared to sell it - and how would a computerized ticketing system recognize that staff member A is prepared to sell something that staff member B is not?

Any ticket you buy is valid. You wouldn't be making a binding contract otherwise.

But it is still possible for ticket office staff to sell tickets which they are 'not supposed' to sell. The ticketing system is dumb; it only knows that the member of ticket office staff has added a given ticket to the 'basket' and then takes payment for it.

So you're saying there are some valid tickets that are 'not supposed' (direct quote) to be sold?

You can get a Leeds dayrider on the bus for £4.70 if you don't get any luck at the ticket office.
Thanks. Is that for First Group services only, or all operators, please? It's a while since I went to Leeds, but I seem to remember First, Arriva and is it Transdev who run Keighley & District, all with a significant presence.

Of course. For example, Two Together Railcard discounted tickets are normally supposed to be purchased together (for 2 people). But ticket office staff may sell an individual ticket on its own, possibly in contravention of their employer's instructions.

But none of this is anything that you need to worry about. I'm just explaining the reason why some staff might sell you the PlusBus whereas others may refuse.

What he's saying is the machine currently can't check everything. EG it can't check if you really have a railcard.

Actually that's something we can't currently do as MTIS @station prevents one Two Together discounted ticket being sold

Many thanks for your help. But surely the random nature of whether the member of staff I encounter may or may not sell me a particular ticket IS something to worry about? It doesn't inspire confidence, that's for sure.

Ultimately, you're not entitled to a PlusBus ticket in the same way you would be if you had, say, a Leeds to London ticket. But there's no harm in asking is what I'm saying.

A pass for all buses (DayTripper) is £6.50 bought on board or £5.50 on the Mcard App.

You'd be better off trying to getting the plusbus at your departure station, interchange station or from a guard on the way rather than trying to get one at Leeds for Leeds.

I have gotten plusbus from guards and offices to accompany rover type tickets I already held and had no resistance whatsoever once I showed the valid ticket.

As an aside, the "PlusBus General Information" page on KnowledgeBase states that PlusBus is available with Rover and Ranger tickets, subject to the usual caveat that your rail journey(s) on a given day can't be wholly within one PlusBus zone (e.g. if all you do is Deansgate to Manchester Piccadilly, you can't get a Greater Manchester PlusBus ticket).

Thanks, both - much appreciated. I'll try to buy it at Southport, then, just before I set out.
