I am at a bit of a lose end tomorrow so I am going to do a bit of track bashing, £9.80 seems good value for the mileage I can cover. My question is as I couldn't find it on the guide I was looking at can this be purchased on the train? I am coming from the Edinburgh direction so will was just going to get a ticket to Croy as this is the first station it is valid from.

Yes, ask for a daytripper exchange, when you alight from the train, exchange the ticket at the booking office for the scratchcard. Or any booking office for that matter.!

Yeah, it is a pretty good value product, you'll get plenty of miles in i'm sure! Not sure the circle will be that fun though!:D

Make sure you have the ticket before you pass Croy!
If you arrive at Glasgow QS without a ticket then you will be "encouraged" to purchase a single from Croy to Glasgow QS

I don't think the guard will have a problem issuing it, but for your information the 'from' field on the machine should have Croy entered, or indeed any Strathclyde station, and Daytripper exchange in the 'to' field. If you see them of course!

Don't say that!
I quite often buy a Roundabout
Easy enough at a station, but it seems some on-board staff really struggle with this
On my last attempt the guard gave in, advising me to buy it on arrival at Glasgow QS

I then faced the "spanish inquisition" in order to purchase one
"You should have bought this at the station"
"Greenfaulds does not have such facilities"
"You should have bought it on the train"
"As already explained, the guard couldn't figure out how to"
"You will need to buy a single and then go to the Travel Centre and buy it there"
At that point I refused and asked they call the Station Manager, all of a sudden I was presented with a Roundabout ticket

Thats poor training on Scotrails part. Im thinking about going up there next wednesday chasing my last 314's and afew 170's, not decided if to get a roundabout or a daytripper.

I'd do the outer lines not covered by a Roundabout if you have plenty of time, and leave the roundabout ones for another time. Or do it the other way round. Unless you only require one or two lines?

Thanks for that link that is better I have most of the South of the river lines to do, I am saving the Airdrie route until I can get all the way to Edinburgh next month. But thier are certainly enough lines in that areas that will keep me entertained for the day and save the Daytripper for when the A-B opens.

Some people are doing the new line tomorrow. I would do it, but wouldn't want to be sat with random people and it's too cold to be stood next to a window all day. It's a shame there wasn't a forum meet for one of the Airdrie-Bathgate railtours (there's at least two more, using decent traction too).

The only reason I buy a Roundabout is that it is cheaper than the Off Peak return between Cumbernauld and Glasgow, plus my next destination which varies between Queens Park, Paisley, or Anniesland
I can then take a wide diversion and return via Whifflet

Isn't that common when travelling by train?!?
I expect to see other people, very rare to have a carriage all to your lonesome

I know! I don't understand though as i was taught how to do this during my TE commercial training nearly 7 years ago! If you can't issue something due to lack of know how ( and i've been there!) you find out how to, and you are capable the next time. I provided the help in the event the guard may be unaware though. :)

You'd love Motherwell - Cumbernauld yorkie, or perhaps a midweek late Carlisle- Central via Dumfries.

I did look into that but the timings didn't suit me and I would only be on it for a short distance i felt wait for the real service. Quite like 334s. No reason we shouldn't do it as a meet and cover some 380 traction at the same time.

I was quite disappointed that they all started from the Edinburgh end. The lack of rail link for me to Edinburgh (which was one of the reasons the line was being built!) meant it would cost a lot to go over there, then quite a lot on the tour itself, then I'd be going over the line I commute on several times a week

I'm quite surprised with the daytrippers and roundabouts. I've never had a problem at the stations; they disappear for 5 seconds and come back with one. So usually I can either buy it on the day, or (if I'm starting elsewhere) a few days beforehand; IIRC there's no expiry date on them (don't know about the roundabouts, though). It must be amazing value for families going for a day out down to the Ayrshire coast! £9.80 for an adult and two weans, £17.50 for a family of 4-6.

If you're coming from the east, then a ticket to Hamilton Central is considerably cheaper than a ticket to Croy. Get a daytripper before you board and take an EC from EDB!

Carter USM, Are you sure about the "Daytripper Exchange"? I've never heard of that, and the SPT site says its not available on train :-

http://www.spt.co.uk/tickets/daytripper.aspx

as does national rail :-

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/promotions/pr1122f561104ba89212e81691845c04/details.html

although these both do point to a useful place to get them online? Do you have anything that could be printed out to show to a guard to get one of the daytripper exchanges?

No, i don' unfortunately . If you board at a manned station, then technically you should have one anyway, but i sell exchanges most days, as do many of my colleagues. The daytripper scratchcard isn't available on train, thats why we sell the exchange. People ask me for it, and i also offer it when it would be less expensive than the equivalent off peak fare. It must be exchanged at the first opportunity for the scratchcard though.

The Roundabout uses a standard BR ticket
It has the station of issue and date of issue, valid for 1 day only

These tickets are becoming rather popular now too, it is amazing that people were so unaware of them! You also see paper roundabout tickets, amusingly they have a fairground carousel printed on them! I think the subway issues those, but i may be wrong.

I'm not sure Waverley would have them in stock, though they might well do!

They probably would. Quite a few of their trains go into the SPT zone, so it's not unfeasible. Even if not, you could always buy it at Motherwell station (if you choose to go that way).

Only manned stations in the SPT area stock Daytripper tickets
Edinburgh does not, as it is operated by East Coast
They used to many years ago, but GNER stopped doing so

So there are no ScotRail staff that work in the booking office? I had no idea!

Thanks for the update, I'll bear that in mind for next time. Interesting that both national rail and the SPT site give the wrong (or incomplete if you are being charitable) advice!

Yes, i know what you mean, though you could argue that the daytripper isn't available on train, though the exchange for one is! :)

How did you get on, Failed Unit?

Yep Scotrail have a ticket office on platform 14, which was fine before the barriers were installed but now can only be used as an excess fares point.

Good day out, got a ticket on the train so only needed to pay to Croy (and the Roundabout of course) Gaurd must have done it quite a few times before as he didn't even bat an eyelid.

Got a ride on a 314 on the outer circle, I think it is my first trip on one - done lots of 313's and 315's hence why I am not totally sure. In fact had a ride on all of the FSR EMU's at some point in the day.

Couple of things that i didn't expect, I didn't see on the "Central" lines a single first liveried 156 - have the painted any non-SPT units are just (un)lucky. Good to see the barriers at Central during the day as well.

Totally recommend it, may go for the daytripper in a couple of weeks once the A-B is open.

Yeah, i knew about the excess office, i can't remember the last time i was in the booking hall at Waverley though. Think you were just unlucky with not seeing a single 'First' 156, but i suppose you can't have it all! Did you go to Killie?

the Roundabout of course
Not as comprehensive as the Daytripper and I've never had any problem buying one of these on-train or at a station
Ideal if you are not planning to travel beyond Paisley, but includes Motherwell and Dumbarton

The daytripper will only allow you to travel to Drumgelloch
However, the Central Scotland Rover will allow you the entire route between Glasgow QS and Edinburgh

No East Kilbride, Killie was out of distance for my ticket so it is on my list for next time. Maybe go for a bit of planning and do Glasgow - Killie - Ayr - Glasgow.

My plan when the A-B is open is just buy the Edinburgh - Drumgelloch ticket and Daytripper onwards.

The current daytripper map shows that it's valid out to Caldercruix at the moment, for bus services (should you be so inclined to visit the wonderful village of Caldercruix). So I'd be rather surprised if Caldercruix station was not included in the SPT daytripper ticket. Although I doubt any other stations would be included. Best to check nearer the time, though. Might save you about 20p

Aye, that's a nice wee trip. I actually prefer going via Kilmarnock to going the main way via Killwinning, even if it is quite a bit longer! If you have to time, going up to Largs is quite nice. Of course, you'll also be able to get a 380!

314s are quite an... experience, aren't they

Yeah the line Between Kilmarnock and Barrhead is a good detour .
There should be a 1 day Central Scotland Rover.:p
