Edinburgh airport - no pedestrian access?

On most buses and the tram to Edinburgh airport, it costs a lot more to the airport compared to Ingliston Park & Ride. If you try to walk from the Park & Ride bus stop, you pass a sign saying "No pedestrian access to airport". Is it actually forbidden to walk to the airport?

When I fly from Edinburgh I only have a small hand luggage case and always walk from the Park and Ride. Once you’re out the car park and ride there is a path down the road to the airport. Doesn’t take long. There isn’t a path out the park and ride but I always just go for it anyway.

I've walked from Ingilston Tram Stop loads of times (prior to getting my CD Pass*) with hand luggage.

As far as I am aware it is not forbidden and there are numerous ways of getting into the Airport from the main drag.

It's just a warning because there is no pavement on the direct road from the P and R stop to Eastfield Road. There are pavements on the other three sides of the site, so you could walk the long way round.

I've often walked down if I have been hiring a Car (not Flying) - if you cut through the area they store the cars in it's quicker than going to the Airport and coming back on yourself.

Only there to test Hainan Airlines on their ridiculous Dreamliner to Dublin. So only had one night's worth of stuff having stayed in the Travelodge near Gyle the previous night. By that evening I was back in my own bed!

They are a Chinese Airline. They used to fly Edinburgh-Dublin-Beijing with the 787-9.

I took it once and really enjoyed it. Quite a novel experience taking a widebody on such a short flight. Decent service too - luggage and a small drink/snack included as well.

So what is the point of the sign?

Just read this thread for the first time. IMO, the sign is there:

a) to try and persuade walkers to use the facilities provided but more importantly​

b) to minimise any claim against the airport if somebody was injured or worse, and there was a subsequent claim that the provision for pedestrians was inadequate​

Don't expect there to be any simple reason that benefits the public.
