I have bought a Southern Daysave for next week, before planning my itinerary I wanted to check what the position is regarding using these on Thameslink branded services. GTR claim it’s only valid on services branded as Southern, however I know it’s been mentioned on this forum before that GTR can’t enforce brand-specific tickets, although with the Daysave ticket being a rover rather than standard tickets I wasn’t sure if that still applied in this case. Can I use this ticket on Thameslink services south of the Thames, and if it is valid on them, what is the likelihood of me facing hassle from staff, and what would my rights be in such a situation should it happen?

Thanks in advance.

The Southern Daysave is only valid on Southern services and not Gatwick Express, Thameslink etc indeed if you look at this website which has details of ALL rail rovers for the UK then you will see it is only valid on trains operated by Southern.

If you tried to use the Southern Daysave on a Thameslink ticket then it would be considered to be a invalid ticket on the Thameslink service as it is only valid on Southern operated services and Southern don't "claim" where it's only valid but actually states where it is valid.

As to your rights, as you be holding a ticket which isn't valid on the Thameslink, you would be in the wrong as the onus is on you to ensure you have a valid ticket for the service you board.

Publicity material available online suggests not...

When can I use my DaySave train pass?

The DaySave ticket is an Off-Peak ticket. This means you can use it at any time on Saturdays, Sundays and even on Bank Holidays for those day trips out. During the Monday to Friday period your train day pass is not valid before 10:00, or on trains that leave the following stations between 16:15 and 19:15:

  • East Croydon
  • Victoria
  • London Bridge
  • Clapham Junction
Your DaySave ticket is valid for one day and can be used for Standard Class travel only. These tickets are not valid on Gatwick Express, Thameslink, Great Northern or services from any other train operator.

The T&C's are quite clear that it isn't "valid". So.i would expect some hassle from staff. However in practice I doubt you'll get a ticket check on TL, unless you're really unlucky.

However if you want hassle then you can argue that GTR can't enforce brand specific tickets. But I wouldn't recommend this if you want an easy day.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
When the 442s ran the Gat Ex with some extensions to and from Brighton, I do recall that south of Gatwick Airport, these became the green Southern Trains which was already documented at the time.

Is this still the case for the red 387s should if the Gat Ex is ever reinstated to Brighton?

Thanks for the replies. To be on the safe side I won’t plan any Thameslink branded services into my itinerary.

There's mutual ticket acceptance at the moment between Southern & Thameslink due to train crew shortages. If the problems continue into your day of travel you may be ok ;)
