The Railway Magazine has reported that these two units have had large sections of their bodysides removed for analysis following the cracking issues. It suggests that repairs to these vehicles may well be unviable necessitating new vehicles.
Which vehicles in each set are affected? And what has been cut away?
Where are the two trains currently?
Thanks.

802005 is back in service.

800026 isn't.

It shouldn’t be in service if it’s had large sections removed from the bodywork...

Only if one presumes the “reports” in the magazines were accurate.

It is out in traffic.

I should add that two LNER units that had also been reported as too badly cracked to return to service with the bulk of the fleet back in May, 800104 and 800105, have also made appearances in service in the last few weeks. In the case of 800105, this unit was dumped in Tyne Yard for the majority of June as a result. As there is no fix for these cracks, what has changed that these units have all of a sudden gone from being "too badly cracked" to being fit for service without any remedial work done whatsoever?

Is there no fix? Like plastering a cracked house wall, they dig out material and replace it, I understand. The issue is more how to prevent cracks from propagating. Until that's understood, there is a super regular checking process.

Not at present, a fix is yet to be developed.

Exactly the same answer as my previous - this presumes the reports that they were “too badly cracked” were accurate. That they’re back in service would suggest that those reports were over-exaggerated.

From this correspondence it looks as though all GWR and LNER units are serviceable (subject to inspections) except for 800026. Presumably sections weren’t cut out of 800205 or, as suggested above, the degree of parts removal wasn’t particularly significant.
I understood that sections from both units had gone for testing to UK and Japanese laboratories.
Has 800205 been reassembled or is 800026 the sole guinea pig?

800013 also seemingly not in action since April (based on gen group postings). There are some others stopped for a shorter time.

Are we talking about the yaw damper cracks or the lifting point cracks here? I'm starting to lose track!

There's a report in Rail 935 stating that the fix for the lifting point cracks is that they will be removing and replacing the affected area; it should only take 24 hours for each unit as the vast majority of the fleet only have a single cracked lifting point.

My guess is they'll do those units with only one cracked area first and leave the ones with multiple areas needing changing until later in order to maximise fleet availability?
