45030 0915 York – Leeds
47156 1706 Leeds – York
40068 1735 York – Leeds
40054 1906 Leeds – York

Saturday 07/07/79
86252 00xx Mossend – Carlisle
At Carlisle I covered the various diverted ECML services, more in hope than expectation. It was quite a chilly night, and I was delighted when I saw a class 40 arriving on the 2015 Kings Cross – Edinburgh. Usually the traincrew took advantage of the stop at Carlisle to refill the boiler water tanks, but this morning they didn’t bother – there wouldn’t have been much point:
40092 0324 Carlisle – Edinburgh
A big required NB 40, that had worked right through from Kings Cross. I clambered aboard, got my head down, and wrapped myself up to try (in vain) to retain some heat.
27202 + 27208 0615 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street
Time to cover the Glasgow – Scarborough:
26039 0810 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh
40150 banker to Cowlairs
Whatever took over the Scarborough at Edinburgh wasn’t to my liking, so I headed into Fife
40034 0950 Edinburgh – Kirkcaldy
DMU Kirkcaldy – Inverkeithing
40061 1120 Inverkeithing – Kirkcaldy
27043 1150 Kirkcaldy – Edinburgh
Here I picked up the gen that a Deltic had done a trip to Carstairs. I’d never had one there before (or since), so it had to be done:
47435 1255 Edinburgh – Carstairs
55011 1353 Carstairs – Edinburgh
At Edinburgh I saw required 40175 propelling a set of stock into a west end bay platform to form the 1455 to Aberdeen. There was already a 2-car DMU parked on the bufferstops, and the traincrew didn’t notice it, so the propelling stock hit it with an almighty BANG. Once the dust had settled (literally) the set of stock was withdrawn for C&W examination, as was the DMU. By sheer good fortune there was a charter train just arriving at Edinburgh, so the stock from that was instantly purloined to form the 1455 to Aberdeen, still with required 40175, departing only 38 minutes late. Not bad, considering.
40175 1455 Edinburgh – Inverkeithing
DMU Inverkeithing – Edinburgh
Ideally I’d have taken 40175 for a longer run, but I had another fish to fry. My third new 40 for haulage of the day was 40153, which had been working Edinburgh – Carstairs portions all day – and I’d passed it going in the opposite direction four times already.
40153 1610 Edinburgh – Carstairs
40153 1813 Carstairs – Edinburgh
This was my 100th class 40 for haulage.
I now decided to head south. There was an interesting diversion taking place between York and Retford due to engineering works, with trains diverted from York via Normanton, Aldwarke Jn, Tinsley, Darnall to Retford. The track around Tinsley was all new to me, so I wanted to do it with either a 40 or a Deltic. Things started off well:
40152 2023 Edinburgh – Newcastle via Carlisle
That’s as far as the 40 got, being replaced at Newcastle by a Peak. I got off and waited …

Tuesday 07/07/81
More Scottish Rovering:
85033 0041 Carstairs – Carlisle
86243 0355 Carlisle – Mossend
47467 05xx Mossend – Perth
40058 0809 Perth – Dundee
40058 0939 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street
Time for a dabble on the West Highland Line:
37081 1254 Glasgow Queen Street – Oban
37081 1755 Oban – Arrochar & Tarbet
My first trip to Oban, and with a required 37.
37025 1938 Arrochar & Tarbet – Crianlarich
37011 2022 Crianlarich – Cowlairs
This was the Euston portion of the 1822 ex Fort William, which at that time was detached at Cowlairs and run direct to Mossend, attaching there to an Inverness – Euston service:
27038 22xx Cowlairs – Mossend
81004 23xx Mossend – Carlisle

Saturday 07/07/84
I was on my familiarisation visit to Inverness Control to see if I might like to move up there to fill one of their vacancies. My wife went for a wander around Inverness, whilst I strolled into the Control Office. I could have chosen a better time – the 0820 Inverness – Queen Street had reached Carr Bridge whereupon 47550 had committed spontaneous combustion. Big NB 37147 was being taken off its tank train at Culloden and sent to rescue the train, whilst another loco had to be found to run the tank train. Meanwhile there was a relief train to Glasgow Queen Street scheduled to depart at 1008 with required 37132, and the 1045 Inverness – Aberdeen had required 37237. I was spoiled for choice. It was clear the Controllers wouldn’t have time to stop to chat with me about the job right then, so I made my excuses and left. I’d decided to try to get 37132 over the Highland Main Line, as 37s on that route weren’t common (until the era of pairs on the sleepers). My wife arrived back at the station just in time, so I hurried her aboard, with the promise of a visit to the city of Perth, and lunch there.
37132 1008 Inverness – Perth
The back working of failed 47550 should have been the 1335 Queen Street – Inverness, so I made sure we were back at the station in time for that:
37191 1439 Perth – Inverness
37191 was not required, but you can’t complain about 37s both ways over the Highland Main Line in daylight.

Sunday 07/07/85
There was a charter from Caersws to Ayr which had arrived behind required 37042, so along with a friend we made our way to Ayr to talk our way on board:
47578 1505 Glasgow Central – Ayr
37042 1700 Ayr – Carlisle
87003 1910 Carlisle – Glasgow Central

Monday 07/07/86
I was working late shift on the West Power Control job in Glasgow Control. There was an excursion returning from Rhyl to my home town of Gourock. I received a phone call from the Train Crew Supervisor at Carlisle who put me on to the Polmadie man who was working the return excursion. The layout at Gourock had recently been remodelled, and the driver was unsure as to how the run-round move would be managed. Since I was very familiar with the layout, I was able to explain the moves to him, and then added – “I’m joining the train at Port Glasgow, so I’ll see you at Gourock.” When my shift finished at 2200 I caught my usual homeward EMU to Port Glasgow, and alighted there for:
81017 2304 Port Glasgow – Gourock
I’d already pre-warned the station supervisor at Gourock, so he pulled out his copy of the scheme plans and explained to the driver what needed to be done, and where all the points and signals were. A good evening’s work – and a class 81 into Gourock for good measure.

Friday 07/07/89
Potteries Fortnight still in full swing:
20005 + 20208 0859 Crewe – Llandudno
DMU Llandudno – Crewe

100 in the book by 1979! How many did you have overall?

Full disclosure: I've only had 40.
In the end I got 173 out of 199 (or 200 if you count D322).
The 26 locos I missed were:
005 / 011 / 021 / 030 / 039 / 040 / 041 / 043 / 045 / 051 / 053 / 059/ 072 / 076 / 087 / 088 / 089 / 098 / 102 / 114 / 123 / 132 / 144 / 147 / 189 / 190
There were a few common ones there I missed, such as 40030 and 40114, but mostly these were NB locos that didn't work on passenger very often, several of which were early withdrawals.

Don't know how many I had. I've got 77 logged, but that doesn't include any in 1984 or outside the summers in 1982 and 1983. I haven't even got anything recorded for my machine 40033.

The only one of your missing ones I have recorded is 087. Coming up later this month on your favourite diagram.

7th July 1984 - a certain symmetry to the day:

37084 Newcastle - Darlo 1E28
37107 Darlo - Newcastle 1N13
37107 Newcastle - Darlo 1F30 (this was a relief from the Toon to KX)
37084 Darlo - Newcastle 1S51

7th July 1985 - took the last unit to Carlisle ready to start a Freedom of Scotland....

7th July 1988 - attending my degree ceremony:

45103 Newcastle - Darlo 1O11

Here, the Wagon expired. Fortunately their was a Goyle sat on a set of stock ready to work a local to Hartlepool that could be requisitioned. As a result, 37521 (which I still need) worked the Hartlepool turn. Anyway...

31278 Darlo - York 1O11
47524 York - New St 1O11
47422 Leeds - Newcastle 1E73

7th July 1990:

90042 New St - Wolves
90009 Wolves - New St

47328 19:30 Manchester Victoria-Bolton(2P62 Man Vic-Bpl N)
31248 20:10 Bolton-Manchester Victoria(Bpl N-Man Vic)

Others noted.....
31200 Edinburgh-Manchester Victoria(21:18 ex Bolton).

Worse ways to spend an evening!
Pretty sure 31248 was a winner.
Shows the way the sprinter shortages gave a new lease of life into getting some locos in.

Well you chose a good week for it. It will be interesting to see which trains (if any) we coincided on.
Meanwhile, here's my efforts for 8th July:

Sunday 08/07/79
As explained yesterday, there was a rare diversion taking place overnight, with ECML services being diverted from York to Retford via Normanton and various curves around Tinsley. I had left Edinburgh behind a 40, only for it to be replaced by a Peak at Newcastle, so I got off and festered awhile…
55008 0156 Newcastle – York via Stockton
On arrival at York, the sounds of the Deltic buffering up to uncouple spelt the end of my dreams of having an unusual loco over the diversionary route. I suppose the combination of traction knowledge and route knowledge was too much to hope for.
47414 0352 York – Peterborough via Normanton, Aldwarke Jn, Tinsley, Darnall , Retford
55013 0952 Peterborough – Newcastle
The diversions were over, so this ran ECML all the way.
55007 1455 Newcastle – Berwick upon Tweed
55007 was running on One Engine Only, and ran 40 minutes late waiting traincrew. During the Penmanshiel block there were no daytime services diverted via Carlisle. Instead there was an express coach service between Berwick upon Tweed and Dunbar, which drove past the site of the new alignment that was being built around Penmanshiel tunnel.
Bus Berwick upon Tweed – Dunbar
55007’s late running meant I missed the booked (loco hauled) connection at Dunbar, so picked up an HST instead:
43093 + 43119 1820 Dunbar – Edinburgh
Here I had a spot of luck as the 0950 Euston – Dundee was also running 30 minutes late, so I made the connection:
47708 1820 Edinburgh – Dundee (30 late)
So its nearly 8pm and I haven’t had a class 40 all day. Time to put that right:
40150 2026 Dundee – Kirkcaldy
40184 2151 Kirkcaldy – Edinburgh
At Edinburgh I noted 40158 lurking in the shadows. Unfortunately instead of re-engineing my train as I hoped, it dropped onto the following 1957 Aberdeen – Kings Cross “Night Aberdonian” which was Sleepers Only. I had a word with the guard, and he invited me to join him in his BG as far as Carlisle, plying me with free cups of tea and newspapers. The (overstretched) validity of my Darlington 3D ticket was at an end, so I really needed to head home to York. Luck was on my side with another class 40:
(Monday 09/07/79)
40150 0237 Carlisle – Doncaster (overdossed again!).
DMU Doncaster - York

Wednesday 08/07/81
Scottish Rover:
83008 0140 Carlisle – Mossend
47207 03xx Mossend – Perth
40058 0721 Perth – Glasgow Queen Street
40058 0935 Glasgow Queen Street – Aberdeen
27024 Banker to Cowlairs
40058 1340 Aberdeen – Perth
40095 1559 Perth – Arbroath
55015 1733 Arbroath – Edinburgh
55016 2025 Edinburgh – Darlington
When an 83 arrived on an overnight, I couldn’t refuse it. A good doss through to Perth, then straight onto 40058. Evidently class 40s were a bit thin on the ground that day, as I stuck with the same loco for an entire circuit Perth – Glasgow – Aberdeen – Perth. 40095 back to Arbroath made a nice change, and I alighted there as I’d heard that 55015 had gone to Aberdeen, so I intercepted it on its way back south. Then it was time for another overnight, this time on the ECML, with 55016 taking me south.

Sunday 08/07/84
43091 (not powering) + 43053 1020 Inverness – York
47211 pilot 1020 Inverness - Perth
After visiting Inverness with my wife, it was time to head south back to York. Unfortunately the HST set that had arrived from Kings Cross the previous evening was feeling poorly, with 43091 not providing any power. Inverness had to provide a pilot loco to work at least as far as Perth. This was 47211, rather than anything more exotic. Shame. The train lost loads of time en route – measured in hours rather than minutes. We even ran into the loop outside Heaton Depot, for a fitter to come armed with various circuit boards to attempt to revive 43091, all to no avail. This was a long slow journey home, with 43053 slogging along on maximum power in the heat of the day.

Monday 08/07/85
Doubling back off a 12-hour night shift onto a late shift, the sensible thing to do is to go home and grab as much sleep as possible. There is another option:
87013 0705 Glasgow Central – Carlisle
37216 0840 Carlisle – Glasgow Central (required)
86103 1115 Glasgow Central – Carstairs
86226 1301 Carstairs – Glasgow Central
… and back to work!

Saturday 08/07/89
Visiting relatives:
86419 0917 Crewe – Birmingham New Street
47523 1026 Birmingham New Street – Plymouth

Saturday 8th July 1978

47346 Lime St to Crewe

This is in my non-ETH Duff listings, so I know I had it on this day but I have no idea of the context. I even had the Duff again in 1982!

Tuesday 8th July 1986

Day 2 of my Coasts and Peaks Rover. Goyles to start and end the day with a strange interlude of four hours when I went on a round trip from Liverpool to Chester and Crewe and back. Wasn't doing new lines. Scored all the Goyles bar the last one which I'd had as 325, but not 464. Oh, and the 47/6 which I then had as 47840 a few times in late 1991 when commuting between Oxford and Reading. Now preserved, I believe, back as 47077.

31437 Warrington C to Birchwood, 1E34 08.45 Liverpool to Sheffield
31427 Birchwood to Lime St, 1M16 06.40 off Hull
31185 Lime St to Sheffield, 1E85 10.45 to Yarmouth
31462 Sheffield to Lime St, 1M31 08.15 off Yarmouth

Then unit and Duff stuff...

508105 Lime St to Hooton
142047 Hooton to Chester (this was the 15.01 Helsby to Chester via Hooton)
47428 Chester to Crewe, 1V?? 14.08 Holyhead to Cardiff
47613 Crewe to Lime St, 1M?? 13.15 off Paddington

Then 3 Ned leaps on the Liverpool Merseyrail Loop - 508126, 507026, 508122. Lime St to Central, Central to Moorfields, Moorfields to Lime St. Lol.

31257 Lime St to Birchwood, 1E53 19.45 to Cleethorpes
31448 Birchwood to Lime St, 1M61 19.22 off Sheffield
31464 Lime St to Warrington C, 1E54, 21.45 to Sheffield

Sunday 8th July 1973:

As a prelude to our second Freedom of Scotland week, a friend and I made a couple of day trips in the school holidays, including this one to Edinburgh. Unfortunately, back in the day, there were no Sunday trains on the West Highland Lines, so we had to use EMUs into and out of Glasgow. However, what they lacked in haulage charisma, they gained in spotting visibility through the big picture windows behind the driver's cab.

EMU Helensburgh Central-Glasgow QS LL via Singer
5399+5413 Glasgow QS HL-Edinburgh Waverley via Falkirk Grahamston
5397+27 119 Edinburgh Waverley-Glasgow QS HL via Falkirk Grahamston
EMU Glasgow QS LL-Helensburgh Central via Singer

Locos seen:

Dumbarton Central: 5371.
Glasgow Queen Street: 5399+5413.
Cowlairs Carriage Sidings: 5396+5408.
Eastfield Depot: 3545, 5112/57,5308/59/64/81, 5412.

Dumbarton Central: 5371, 8097.

Monday 8th July 2019:

Second stage of the journey back from Tuscany:

MD 17 (DMU) 10 08 Asciano Monte Oliveto Maggiore-Siena
MD 17 (again) 10 41 Siena-Empoli
E464 682 12 13 Empoli-Pisa Centrale
E402 120 13 02 Pisa Centrale-Torino Lingotto via Genova & Alessandria
EMU 17 06 Torino Lingotto-Torino Porta Susa

If I may be permitted....a quick flashback to Saturday 5th July 1975. I did a day trip from Petersfield to Shanklin, Isle of Wight, mainly in EMUs....but on the outward journey I baled out at Portsmouth & Southsea for less than a mile to Portsmouth Harbour behind required 47 166 on the Summer Saturdays only working from Wolverhampton.

47538 14:15 Manchester Victoria-Blackpool N.
47538 17:50 Manchester Victoria-Blackpool N.

Deck chaired at Man Vic waiting for a winner, none turned up this afternoon/evening but plenty going on.

Apologies for lack of headcodes/info from some of these posts, these are from a notebook I found rather than the moves books I kept at home, thus some of the times will be when I got on the train rather than the time the train was booked to depart, easy to remember for transferring into the moves book at home that night but a nightmare when deciphering notes 30odd years later!

Friday 9th July 1976

This is the day it all started. 45 years ago, aged 10, a school trip to York. We went by train and a few of us took down numbers. We also went round the NRM which had opened the previous year. The only haulage I can confirm is

46029 Man Vic to York

Saturday 9th July 1983

Lots of 87s and a couple of short 40 leaps.

87019 WBQ to Preston, 1S53 08.07 Brum to Glasgow
87016 Preston to Crewe, 1M33 07.20 Glasgow to Brum
87002 Crewe to Preston, 1S61 06.45 Paddington to Glasgow
40177 (required) Preston to Blackpool, 1M94 08.46 Edinburgh to Blackpool
40012 Blackpool to Preston, 1Z?? Relief Blackpool to Kilmarnock

177 appeared to do several runs between Preston and Blackpool and 104 did a couple too. I went back to the 87s...

87007 Preston to Crewe, 1M57 09.20 Glasgow to Brum. My notebook says 150 late - defective vehicle. No Delay Repay back then.
86209 (boo) Crewe to Preston, 1P63 14.05 Euston to Carlisle
87024 Preston to Crewe, 1M42 10.30 Inverness to Euston
87034 Crewe to Preston, 1S87 18.05 Brum to Glasgow
87019 Preston to Crewe, 1M47 17.20 Glasgow to Brum
87010 Crewe to Lime St, 1F62 19.30 Euston to Liverpool
Unit home

20% of the 87/0 fleet in one day. Lol.

Wednesday 9th July 1986

Day 3 of my Coasts and Peaks and my 10 year anniversary as a rail enthusiast.

31452 Warrington C to Man Picc, 1E85 10.45 Liverpool to Yarmouth
87020 Man Picc to Wilmslow, 1A?? 12.00 to Euston
33201 Wilmslow to Man Picc, 1M70 07.50 Swansea to Manchester
33201 Man Picc to Crewe, 1V07 13.45 to Cardiff
33010 Crewe to Chester, 1M86 12.00 Cardiff to Llandudno

Both Cromptons were required.

142030 Chester to Hooton
508123 Hooton to Liverpool Central
31455 Lime St to Irlam, 1E52 16.45 to Sheffield
31113 Irlam to Lime St, 1M34 16.22 off Sheffield
31113 Lime St to Birchwood, 1E53 19.45 to Cleethorpes
31444 Birchwood to Warrington C, 1M61 19.22 off Sheffield

The only Goyle I really scored was 113. I'd had 452 as 279 (Nuneaton to Leicester) and 455 as 246 (Birmingham to Leicester), both on the same day in 1983. This was the first time I'd had them as 31/4s. Good coincidence.

Sunday 9th July 1989

Return home from the visit to the in-laws (outward was 6th).

150119 Leicester to Coventry
47648 Coventry to Oxford, 1V?? 15.22 Manchester to Paddington

Having arrived at Darlington on my Scottish Rover (ahem), it was time to head back north, pronto. The first overnight, 2000 Kings Cross – Aberdeen, arrived behind 47403, which I turned down in disgust, hoping for something better on the next service …
47422 0101 Darlington – Edinburgh
… or not, as the case may be. I tried again at Edinburgh, to see if I could get a class 40 northbound …
47468 0436 Edinburgh – Dundee
At last, after Duffs from Darlington to Dundee, there was a class 40:
40064 0649 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street
40064 0935 Glasgow Queen Street – Aberdeen
27024 Banker to Cowlairs
40064 1340 Aberdeen – Perth
Once again, there was a scarcity of decent traction about, so the best thing to do was to find a good loco and stick with it. There was one other class 40 active that day, 40057 which had done the morning Aberdeen – Birmingham to Mossend, and was allocated back on the Birmingham – Aberdeen from Mossend then the 1925 Aberdeen – Kings Cross to Edinburgh. Although it was a very common class 40, I decided to do it anyway, by way of a change.
40057 1559 Perth – Aberdeen
All was going well until we got stopped by signals at Longforgan. Restarting from there 40057’s fans whirred mightily, but we didn’t move an inch. This went on for a little while until with a sudden jolt we regained power, but in first field only (i.e. no field weakening available), and in this fashion we carried on to Aberdeen, doing well to arrive only 10 minutes late.
At Aberdeen there was an interesting distraction as the Scottish Tourist Board was carrying out a survey of the various travellers in the station buffet. You can imagine the confusion and consternation when the nice lady with her clipboard came across a bunch of class 40 bashers, and wanted to know where we had come from, where we were going to, how long we intended staying in Aberdeen, and countless other fatuous questions. The answers we provided were factually accurate, but utterly beyond her comprehension!
Meanwhile 40057 had been sent to Ferryhill depot in disgrace, and it’s place on the 1925 to Kings Cross was being taken by a big split-box 40 we had previously identified as 40133. In fact we had misidentified it – it was 40130, giving me my first new class 40 haulage for many months!
40130 1925 Aberdeen – Edinburgh
As we climbed from Inverkeithing up to the Forth Bridge I was leaning out of the window, and witnessed flames leaping from the exhaust ports of 40130. At Edinburgh the 40 came off as booked, and was replaced by a Deltic, so we decided to continue south …
55009 2250 Edinburgh – Newcastle …

(Friday 08/07/83)
47531 2234 York – Crewe
Saturday 09/07/83
The plan for the day was to do the Manchester – Yarmouth throughout, to get the class 40 from Manchester to Norwich and return for maximum mileage. That involved doing an overnight to be in Manchester for it in the morning.
86254 0235 Crewe – Preston
86221 0445 Preston – Crewe
EMU Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly
The Manchester – Yarmouth produced 40082, so we settled in for the long trip to Norwich:
40082 0815 Manchester Piccadilly – MP93 (Little Bytham)
It was a hot day, and the class 40 cooling system was always a bit marginal. After being thrashed up to Stoke Summit, and getting up to maximum speed on the descent, the engine was allowed to idle – which meant the cooling fans were also idling whilst the huge build-up of temperature from the thrashed engine continued unchecked. The engine overheated and shut down. We coasted to a halt, and sweltered for a bit until a class 31 came out from Peterborough to rescue us:
31131 11xx MP93 (Little Bytham) – Peterborough
My aim of having a 40 to Norwich was once again shot to pieces. I didn’t even need the 31. However I did need the next 31 at Peterborough:
31403 1258 Peterborough – Ely
47116 1445 Ely – Liverpool Street
In London I wandered across to Euston in the vague hope there might be something interesting about. Indeed there was, the unique 87101, required for haulage.
87101 1730 Euston – Glasgow Central via Wishaw
Then across to Queen Street for another “101”
27101 2330 Glasgow Queen Street – Perth

Monday 09/07/84
Still displaced, Work As Required at Leeds. I decided there wasn’t a lot of work to be done, required or otherwise, so I’d be far better employed on some “route familiarisation” instead:
31280 0804 York – Leeds
31426 1005 Leeds – Lancaster via Skipton, Carnforth
47437 1214 Lancaster – Preston
37015 1250 Preston – Blackpool North (ADEX from Kilmarnock)
I established that 37015 would be working back over Shap with the return train that evening, so I did some fill-ins before joining that train at Preston. (Trying to join it at Blackpool North would only be inviting problems, given the mentality of the barrier line staff there).
47443 1355 Blackpool North – Preston
87005 1426 Preston – Carlisle
86221 1631 Carlisle – Preston
37015 1848 Preston – Carlisle
87022 2100 Carlisle – Carstairs
47424 2202 Carstairs – Edinburgh
47520 2325 Edinburgh – York

Saturday 09/07/88
43139 + 43024 0509 Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly (0015 from Plymouth)
47373 0650 Manchester Piccadilly – Nottingham via Stockport, Hazel Grove, Dore South Curve, Toton
20183 + 20054 1005 Nottingham – Sleaford
One of the earlier services to Skegness was a lash-up of class 117 DMUs, and they had boiled themselves to a complete standstill on the Grantham avoider just short of Barkston Junction. The train I was on was diverted into the goods lines at the back of Grantham station, where the 20s ran round, then carried on down the ECML, turning off at Barkston Junction where the DMU was viewed stranded. Many of the holidaymakers had flung the doors of the DMU open and climbed out, and were now sunbathing and picnicking on the embankment, so I guess they had been there (in the scorching sun) for some time already. It was quite rare track for the 20s, and of course Barkston Junction doesn’t exist any more.
From here on in I was feeding on crumbs, whatever new traction or interesting routes I could manage:
31124 1142 Sleaford – Doncaster
45107 1351 Doncaster – Birmingham New Street
85022 1548 Birmingham New Street – Coventry
47647 1636 Coventry – Leamington Spa
47471 1704 Leamington Spa – Nuneaton via Coventry
87022 1818 Nuneaton – Crewe

Sunday 09/07/89
47651 2355 Plymouth – Paddington via Bristol Temple Meads, Bath Spa.
This train started off from Plymouth with 47458, which was the through loco from Penzance. However once the Plymouth sleepers had been added to make it load 12, 47458 couldn’t even manage the first climb up to Mutley tunnel immediately outside Plymouth station, so we set back and exchanged locos. This was slightly odd, as 47458 had quite a good reputation amongst the duff bashers on the Eastern Region.

Monday 09/07/90
47521 0711 Reading – Paddington
There were some documents that needed taking to Felixstowe immediately, in order to meet a ship sailing deadline, so I volunteered to take a day out of the office:
86216 0830 Liverpool Street – Ipswich
DMU Ipswich – Felixstowe and return
86232 1343 Ipswich – Liverpool Street
After a couple of hours in the office, it was time to head home:
50035 1650 Paddington – Reading
This was an eventful journey. The class 50 kept cutting out at about 95 mph, with a puff of blue smoke coming from the rear bogie. The train was stopped by signals at Maidenhead after a report of the loco being on fire. After examination by the traincrew, we carried on sedately to Reading, where 50035 was removed from the train and replaced by 47557. The following week 50035 was transferred to Laira. It suffered a Main Generator flashover, and was withdrawn on 03 August 1990. It lives on in the custody of the Class 50 Alliance, based on the Severn Valley Railway.

Wednesday 09/07/97
The East Lancashire Railway was having a gala day, featuring Deltics and Forties. I found a very interesting way of getting to it:
43024 + 43178 0649 Reading – Paddington
89001 0750 Kings Cross – Bradford Forster Square
My first run with the 89 in pure electric mode (i.e. not in place of an HST power car), and my first run with any form of electric traction into Bradford Forster Square. Sustained 125 mph going up Stoke.
156 491 Bradford Interchange – Rochdale
Bus Rochdale – Bury
40122 1300 Bury Bolton Street – Rawtenstall
40122 1400 Rawtenstall – Ramsbottom
55019 + 55002 1426 Ramsbottom – Rawtenstall
55002 + 55019 1500 Rawtenstall – Ramsbottom
50015 1526 Ramsbottom – Rawtenstall
50015 1600 Rawtenstall - Bury Bolton Street
40135 + 40145 1700 Bury Bolton Street – Rawtenstall
40122 + 40145 1800 Rawtenstall - Bury Bolton Street
40135 piloting 40122 + 40145 Rawtenstall – Ramsbottom (i.e. triple-headed 40s)
Tram Bury – Manchester
90004 2000 Manchester Piccadilly – Euston via Hixon.
30 minutes delay en route, regained to 20 minutes late, loco and DVT not speaking the same language.
43026 + 43137 2335 Paddington – Reading

40193 06xx York – Aberystwyth via Selby, Leeds, Mirfield, Hebden Bridge, Manchester Victoria, Chester, Shrewsbury
That’s my idea of a good ADEX from York. Same loco all the way back, same route:
40193 17xx Aberystwyth – York
That was the only time I ever had 40193 for haulage.

Tuesday 10/07/79
55012 1215 York – Doncaster
37054 1226 Doncaster – York (1005 Kings Cross – York additional, 40 minutes late).
A little lunch-time leap. In the evening I had the unusual option of loco haulage York to Harrogate:
47481 1854 York – Harrogate (Return ADEX to Blackpool North)

Friday 10/07/81
Still on my Scottish Rover, I arrived at Newcastle from Edinburgh to find chaos reigns (or rains). The night shift station announcer at Newcastle was a mate of mine (and a well-known crank). He told me that Kings Cross had received nearly six inches of rainfall in under an hour, so everything from the South was horrendously delayed. At a little after 0100 I saw the 1411 Kings Cross – Edinburgh parcels arrive in Newcastle, about 6 hours late. A relief train to Edinburgh was announced – my hopes rose, only to be dashed when a 2 x 2 car DMU with “Edinburgh Express” on the destination blind rattled into the platform. No thanks, not even for the novelty value. Further entertainment was provided by a southbound freightliner, which was a regular turn for a pair of class 37s. Tonight they had expired somewhere, so the rare combination of 47271 being piloted by 26007 spluttered into view. They came off at Newcastle, and I secretly hoped the 26 might pilot the first northbound passenger service, but I was out of luck:
47406 0101 Newcastle – Edinburgh (2 hours late)
47422 0344 Edinburgh – Dundee (90 minutes late)
Then it was a case of déjà vu all over again:
40064 0649 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street
40064 0935 Glasgow Queen Street – Perth
27024 Banker to Cowlairs
This was now the third day in succession I’d had a 40 on the 0935 Glasgow – Aberdeen, so rather than go through to Aberdeen again I decided to leap at Perth for the Aberdeen – Birmingham, which was the other semi-regular 40 diagram. The other option would have been to intercept 40057 which (despite yesterday’s failure) had been sent out again by Aberdeen on the 0740 to Glasgow Queen Street. I planned an elaborate bash to pick it up later …
40153 1118 Perth – Mossend
86251 12xx Mossend – Motherwell
86249 1253 Motherwell – Glasgow Central
Fast walk to Glasgow Queen Street.
The plan now was to do 40057 on the 1335 to Aberdeen as far as Stirling for a +3 into the Clansman to Coatbridge Central for a +10 into 40153 on the Birmingham – Aberdeen, to intercept 40064 on its way back south on the 1340 Aberdeen – Glasgow. A brilliant piece of planning, cruelly let down by the first encounter with reality! 40057 wasn’t going back north on the 1335 from Queen Street, sitting failed on Eastfield. Instead, it was some 47 or other. Likewise, 40064 had worked one way to Aberdeen then been stopped for exams. So instead of three class 40s to play with, there was suddenly only one, 40153. A hurried revision of plans took place:
Fast walk to Glasgow Central
87032 1343 Glasgow Central – Motherwell
85016 1428 Motherwell – Mossend
40153 14xx Mossend – Montrose
Not wanting to be stranded in Aberdeen amidst a sea of 47s, I alighted at Montrose and headed south once more:
47074 1836 Montrose – Glasgow Queen Street
Then another walk across to Glasgow Central to cover the 2110 Fridays Only to Paignton. Last week this had been worked by the pilot loco as far as Polmadie, where a class 40 came on and worked it south over Beattock and Shap. (The 40 couldn’t work from Glasgow Central as they were banned from there). Could there possibly be a repeat performance? No, emphatically not.
47271 2110 Glasgow Central – Carlisle via Beattock
This was the same loco I’d seen piloted by a 26 on a southbound freightliner at Newcastle in the wee small hours of the morning. The Mk 1 coach I was travelling in, M3707, was also unusual. It had no centre doorways, and the lighting, décor, and wooden panelling were all slightly different from the later production models. It ran on BR1 bogies, and was vacuum braked steam heat only. It had first entered service in 1952, and this was to be one of its very last journeys before it was withdrawn at Nottingham later that month. It was cut up at Kings, Newmarket in May 1983. (With thanks to Matthew Youell for the info on this vehicle, via brcoachingstock.groups.io).

Sunday 10/07/83
A bit Sulzery today …
47471 0110 Perth – Inverness
26046 + 26035 0930 Inverness – Kyle of Lochalsh
26035 + 26046 1410 Kyle of Lochalsh – Inverness – travelled in Observation Car 9004
47404 1730 (retimed from 1705) Inverness – Kirkcaldy
47503 2134 Kirkcaldy – Edinburgh
47211 2230 Edinburgh – York

Tuesday 10/07/84
My “Work As Required” routine continues:
46229 0835 York – Leeds via Harrogate “Scarborough Spa Express”
Into the office to show my face, then …
DMU Leeds – Giggleswick
Fast Jog (!) Giggleswick – Settle
40122 1202 Settle – Crossflats
31433 1303 Crossflats – Lancaster
86320 1427 Lancaster – Carlisle
86207 1542 Carlisle – Glasgow Central
Walk to Glasgow Queen Street
37027 1735 Glasgow Queen Street – Perth
47412 1913 Perth – Edinburgh via Ladybank
43106 + 43082 2045 Edinburgh – York

Wednesday 10/07/85
The first 37/4s have arrived at Eastfield at last, 37401 and 37403, and as it is my Rest Day I intend having one of them on one of its first passenger workings:
37403 1105 Glasgow Queen Street – Perth
37403 1247 Perth – Glasgow Queen Street
Normally the loco and stock off the 1105 Perth returned ECS to Cowlairs, but on this occasion the class 47 working the 1105 Aberdeen – Queen Street had failed at Arbroath, so the ECS was arranged to run as a passenger train in its path. We started 6 minutes late from Perth and arrived 1 minute early into Queen Street, on class 47 timings. I was rather impressed by these new 37/4s! The technical rider told me that the plan was to send one to Oban the following day …

Friday 10/07/92
There are a couple of RfD class 90s on hire on the ECML again, so I decided to have a little dabble after work:
90023 1703 Kings Cross – Grantham
This was a service to Edinburgh, first stop Grantham. The driver obviously decided he’d try to match the 125 mph class 91 timings as closely as possible despite the class 90 being a 110 mph locomotive. We reached Grantham in 60 minutes 38 seconds from Kings Cross, a shade over 104 mph average speed start to stop! We went up Stoke at a steady 114 mph, and touched a maximum speed of 117 mph coming down Stoke bank into Grantham. This was by far the fastest run I’ve ever had with a class 90. I doubled back to Peterborough for another RfD 90 on hire:
91028 1816 Grantham – Peterborough
90024 1900 Peterborough – Grantham
Then DMU across from Grantham to Nottingham for an HST to St Pancras:
DMU Grantham – Nottingham
43055 + 43075 2037 Nottingham – St Pancras (43055 was one of my last required for haulage).

Brighton Station and Depot open day (in aid of the SR Woking Homes for elderly ex-railway staff and orphans):

The only haulage of note was 73 122 working the shuttle from the station to the depot with the two driving trailers from 4-VEP unit no. 7780.

National Collection locos on display in the station - on their annual cobweb-blowing outing from the ex-Pullman Car workshops at Preston Park, were:

SR 4-6-0 30850 "Lord Nelson"
LMS 4-6-0 45000
SR 4-6-2 34051 "Winston Churchill"
SR 0-6-0 33001
SR 0-4-4T 30245
SR 2-4-0T 30587
SR (Waterloo & City) electric loco DS75

I travelled from/to Petersfield via Havant in various units which I didn't bother to record.

Monday 10th July 1978:

While working in the South Western Division Special Traffic Section at Wimbledon and living at Petersfield, my usual commuting routine was as follows:

06 57 Petersfield-Waterloo (06 23 ex-Portsmouth Harbour)
08 08 Waterloo-Wimbledon (destination: Woking)
16 53 Wimbledon-Woking (16 42 Waterloo-Basingstoke/Alton, which stopped at Wimbledon specially to pick up DMO staff)
17 26 Woking-Petersfield (16 50 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour)

However, at about this time I was beginning to become more interested in haulage and sometimes I would pop up to Waterloo after work for a couple of pints in the Hole in the Wall, then do the 19 00 Waterloo-Exeter as far as Woking, where I would connect into the 19 20 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour.

33 002 Waterloo-Woking (Consist: TSO W5247/W5471/W546, BFK W14069/W14063, RB W1755, TSO W5361/W5482/W5495. Load 9)

Looks like 87033 was on the Euston-Barrow(arrived with 2 MK3 Sleepers.

Seems the usual productive Fri night out as both locos for haulage was required, the 31 again nearly exploding on a full take of MK3's!
