On one stay, a couple spent practically all night shouting obscenities at each other, which was pretty disturbing, and in the morning, I was having breakfast when a completely naked woman covered in blood came running into the restaurant screaming.

Another time, I stayed at the Travelodge in Barrow with a friend. We'd had a long day and didn't really feel like going back into town for an evening meal, so we were pleased to see a Domino's outside in the car park. I went down there to get some pizza to take back to our room, and found two members of staff beating the crap out of each other.

Cheap prices with free entertainment thrown in too ! Worth every penny......

I regularly use Travelodge because they are cheap, with my expectations adjusted accordingly. My last couple of visits have however been affected by noise, once with a room right next to the heavy corridor access door, banging every time someone used it (which they seemed to do throughout the night) and another where the local seagulls started a screeching contest at first light (0500 !). Neither was directly Travelodge's fault however.

I did stay at the Meadowhall Travelodge once, albeit over 10 years ago now, and found it perfectly acceptable for my purposes then.

Interesting comments on the thread, I have a small amount of shares in Whitbread (Premier Inn) so please feel free to book with them always…:D

PI do usually tend to be better, but in my experience it‘s not always Travelodge = bad, Premier Inn = good though. Recently stayed at the Premier Inn at Birmingham New Street (£42) and the room was already looking very tired for a 10 year old hotel, the carpet and chair were a tad dirty and the curtain fell off the wall. For almost the same price (£45), I stayed at the Travelodge City in London in a Plus room which was top notch in every way.

Always been very impressed with Hampton, the app where you can select your room and use it as a keycard is great. Ibis can also be quite good for the money compared to Travelodge, especially Ibis Styles which tend to have more snazzy interiors than the average budget hotel. Really liked the one in Manchester I stayed in off Piccadilly Gardens, made a nice change from the PI and TL branches there.

In my experience Travelodge has generally ranged from 'poor' to 'acceptable', with Premier Inn ranging from 'acceptable' to 'excellent'. I've never found a Travelodge I'd choose to go back and stay at.

Premier Inn manages remarkable consistency. I recently stayed in one that looks extremely grim on the outside, but on the inside it was just what I'd always expect.

I know a couple of Travelodges that are fine, but generally they seem like the McDonald's of the hotel world. They do the job, but there’s always a chance your stay will be blighted by a horde of noisy neds.

They seem confident enough in that that their current advertising campaign is pushing hard with "you know exactly what you're going to get".

Which I like, to be honest. There's a time and place for adventure, but when I'm tired I want familiarity, ease of use, reliability and no surprises.

Exactly. For city centre stays, especially if I know I'm going to be very busy, that consistent quality really matters. The only time I had a bad experience with them, over something that was essentially pretty trivial, they gave me a full refund immediately, which was far more than they needed to.

Every time I come across the recent Premier Inn advert claiming “you know exactly what you are going to get” it makes me think of the times I’ve stayed in their London Hampstead Hotel.

I really like staying there for the great location and the staff have always been really friendly. However, I haven’t stayed there for a few years now because it’s getting so tatty and falls well below the standard of other Premier Inns. Even when I first stayed there about 12 years ago it needed refurbishing but it still hasn’t been done. Some of the rooms are extremely small with hardly space to move down the side of the bed. The staff are aware of this and try not to allocate these rooms to people staying for longer than one night but I did once get one of these tiny rooms for a 4 night stay. You only have to read tripadvisor reviews to see that things are not up to standard at this hotel.

I'd agree with that. The 'acceptable' came from a recent stay where the water pressure was too low for my liking, and the bed was right up against the wall on one side with only a tiny gap down the other side (easily the smallest hotel room I've ever stayed in!). No aircon or fan either. Still, the fittings worked, the staff were friendly and it was clean so I was happy enough. Looking on tripadvisor there's similar reviews to my experience.

The majority are incredible value for the price you pay.

I would usually choose Premier Inn over Travelodge where possible, they are generally better and as others have said, very consistent. Stayed in one of their hub brand hotels just before the world went to pot and that was very good too, small room but very thoughtfully designed and perfect as a solo traveller.

Travelodge seem to have several generations of room design across their estate, and those that haven’t been refreshed feel quite dated. I’ve had some great Travelodge stays, but also some awful ones, definitely a good idea to check reviews before booking!

Ibis (red) are similar in a way, the more modern hotels are great but some of their properties feel very tired.

A couple of years ago we stopped in the “Gr8 Hotel” at Sevenum, Netherlands - the name conjured up expectations of something akin to a Quality Hotel here, but it turned out to be really nice, a location they had taken on and refurbished to a great standard. I’m glad to see they’ve opened up a few more properties since.

Oh, yeah! When things opened up last summer, I stayed in the one at County Hall in one of the Plus rooms, and given the location and dates, it cost peanuts. Brilliant!

Having spent a night at the TL at Meadowhall pre-Covid, I was less than impressed to discover the hot drink machines were out of order, the lift wasn't working (and I'd been given a room on the top floor).

For bonus points, upon reaching the floor, I was confronted with the unmistakable smell of marijuana.

Needless to say, I won't be staying there again!

I gave up on Travelodge standard rooms years ago. Too basic for me with no shelf space to put any belongings. It felt like being homeless living out of a case. In contrast I actually quite like the Travelodge super rooms. I’ve had very good super rooms at Leeds Central, Glasgow Queen Street, London Vauxhall and York Micklegate. I just don’t bother with Travelodge breakfast as it doesn’t compare with Premier Inn.

There are a few Premier Inns that are not up to their usual standards. I don’t understand why Premier Inn keep opening new hotels and yet do not refurbish old ones in popular locations. I love the location of the London Hampstead Premier Inn in Belsize Park but it falls well below their usual standards. When I first stayed there over 10 years ago it was badly in need of refurbishment but still has not happened.

I have recently stayed in a few Holiday Inn Express hotels and have been quite impressed with their rooms. Certainly better than standard Travelodge.
I shall be trying Holiday Inn Express in Bradford soon. As I am staying 3 nights the 3rd night cost little more than the other 2 combined.

I too was impressed by a Travelodge Plus in London, at Aldgate. The room and breakfast were really good. I also got a good rate in January ready for the August Bank Holiday 2019, even though a staff member told me that all the TLs in central London were full by then.

I stayed there about a month ago. It's fine. Clean. Quiet. Breakfast included. Very close to Interchange.

Well Premier Inn have just gone down in my estimation massively.

Nothing wrong with the accommodation, (Torquay Seafront booked 6 hours before I arrived at an eye-watering £114.50 room only for one night), but at their incapacity to answer the telephone either locally at the hotel or at their head office. All I need is a VAT invoice on a PDF (not the crappy thing you get as part of a four/five page email confirmation). Why do they do this? No email addresses published either, it really is a crap effort made worse by their Covid-19 "we are extremely busy" bullcarp.

Rant over.

I don't "do" Facebook, (or Twitter / Instagram / etc., etc.).

Why not just post an email address?

I'm sure in a hundred years time the human race will have lost the sense of speech.

I think Premier Inn expect business customers to sign up for a business account and get their VAT invoices that way? Keeps costs down.

https://www.meetings-conventions.co...Convention-Hotel/Premier-Inn-Torquay-p3591443 has an email address of info@belgrave-hotel.co.uk for the Premier Inn Torquay, although that domain name might have expired a while ago. Web Archive has this from 2007 http://web.archive.org/web/20071012031514/http://www.belgrave-hotel.co.uk:80/

https://www.premierinn.com/gb/en/faq/making-payments.html says

Will I receive a receipt?

In most cases you will be given a receipt on checking in. If you pay upfront when making your booking, a full VAT receipt will be included in the email confirmation of your booking.

To keep track of past, present and future Premier Inn bookings, why not register on My Premier Inn?

I've lost the receipt for my stay, how can I get another copy?

Only the Premier Inn hotel that you stayed at can issue you with another receipt. For contact details, please see the hotel’s details page.

I arrived just past midnight and the receptionist handed me the receipt at that point.

Stupidly I did not check it until the following day after I had left, where I noticed it was valued at nil! What's the point in printing me a nil value invoice?

Edit: I also used the "get another copy" tool from my on line account and it sent me the nil value invoice.

As I said before, the problem is the lack of someone on the other end of a telephone who actually listens to your problem/request and has the nouse to act on it rather than offer platitudes and read of a script.
