Hi all,

I'm after some advice. I am heading up to Stroud for the day, this Saturday. I have a 16-25 railcard. I would like to avoid the Reading - Swindon bus and travel via Salisbury. I also have a valid Winchester - Southampton season. Could anyone suggest a suitable fare and the best routeing? Any tasty splits would be much appreciated.

If it came down to a later return journey to Winchester, which forced me to use the rail replacement bus or an earlier return which was train all the way, I'd go for the later return.

I have looked at the Freedom of Severn and Solent rover, which I have seen mentioned here before, but I don't think that it will save a huge amount of money, given that I already have my season to cover my day-to-day journeys.

Thanks in advance!

Mark

The SVR fare SOU>STD via Swindon is £35.80 - you may be able to save a bit by splitting into CDRs; not very familiar with the route I'm afraid.

For SOU>BRI>CNM>STD, there are advance fares on the 0827 (arr. 1144) out and 2032 (arr 2308) return coming to a total of £21.50

You might want to consider going to Cam & Dursley (CDU), which has a direct SOU>CDU service (continues to GCR and CNM). If you can get a lift it would be a bit quicker on the way out. There's a bus from Dursley to Stroud (20), but not as frequent as it should be, and you want to avoid buses anyway! This train would allow you to split at some fairly small places which might be an advantage (I'm not familiar with that area). CDU>STD CDR is £6.40 and SOU>CDU is £20.95 so that would be cheaper (I'm sure there are more splits but I'll leave that to someone else, someone with Advantix ;)). There are also Advance fares on all the SOU>CDU and SOU>GCR trains, between £4.95 and £10.55.

£22.30 Winchester to Stroud (Glos) SSR (£23.65 from Southampton Central)

The £22.30 seems to only be valid via Chandler's Ford and NOT Southampton (map RM) or you can use Reading Routes (maps BB BB+BL MW+WR)

According to southern webtis the £23.65 ticket from Southampton is valid via westbury and swindon or bath spa and swindon.

Whoops, obviously forgot the railcard on that one, it was the SSR I meant - valid via Swindon - not valid via Bristol.

The only trains that go through Stroud are from either Swindon or Gloucester so you need to work out a route via Bristol if you wish to avoid Swindon.
Sorry I can't help you with the route and prices but I do know the geography of the area.

I think it is only Reading to Swindon that is "Bus" this weekend. Westbound into Swindon is ok.
