It does... but a few metres of width immediately adjacent to the existing station tunnel is almost certainly easier to do than a couple of miles of entirely new tunnel.

That depends. If you can find worksites (such as under a green space) to make a step-plate junction with the existing tunnels it is pretty "easy" to excavate a tunnel between them (essentially what was done at Angel, and is being done at Bank at present). If you have to dig down to excavate the existing station site next to a live tunnel that is much more complex If there is no space to do so on the surface.

IIRC the Glasgow examples were constructed during the total shutdown of the Subway in the 1970s for refurbishment.

I commute in and out of Manchester Victoria. I'd lengthen platforms 3-6 westwards and put crossovers half way down to improve flexibility. The western footbridge would need moving / redesign but it's barely used. There is scope for either one or two bays on the old North viaduct at the West end of 6 and a small one at the east end. The latter is very much squeezed in but just gives more options if possible. This Would create more capacity on the through lines. The arena development was rather short sighted IMHO

At Ascot, I would demolish and relocate the central island platform by one track width to to the South, making use of the space between platforms 2 and 3. This then gives the option of either a four platform station which could support enhanced services (including London terminators enabling the Reading trains to be speeded up) or alternatively the transfer of the branch service to the new island and abandonment of the current P3 island, which would make down connections better.

For Colchester north, I would demolish the 70’s part and build a nice new building and modernise the rest of the station

The rail plans seem sorted out now but along side these I would:-
Purchase and convert the disused warehouse into a bus station accessible from both sides of the ring road.
ALL bus services to use this, plus a new fleet of electric micro-buses to give access around the town centre, University etc.
Open a new station entrance alongside this in the car park off Fitzwilliam St and make this the only road vehicle dropping off point and Taxi rank.
Totally pedestrianise St George's Square except for the electric bus routes and strictly controlled service vehicles.

Bletchley layout works. Platform 6 needs a lift, and of course there will be the new EWR platforms. Other than that it needs cheering up with e.g. one of the new modular footbridges - it's grim!

What I would love to do is remodel WCML interchanges to two island platforms and change to pair by direction for quality interchange, but I'm well aware it will never happen, not least because it would slow the fasts down, not to mention costing several billion quid for only a minor gain.
Why does it need a new footbridge when it already has one, the only upgrade it needs is a lift for Platform 6 then you have step free access from Street to All Platforms plus the new EWR platforms and you wouldn't need to think about anymore upgrades for the next 25 years.

As to changing from paired by use to paired by direction for claimed "quality interchange" I think that would be a waste of a few billion as there is nothing wrong with the current layout as with paired by use you can still operate a service over one pair of tracks whereas if paired by direction, it usually means replacement buses besides what is wrong with using the footbridge?

You'd be cutting off the reversing siding out of P3, and pushing the junctions and the Western throat much closer to Salford Crescent. I'm not sure how much space the overlaps have round there. Also Crossovers between platforms will be a problem for the TPE 80Xs, as they have quite a lot of overhang at the ends when going round corners. And you don't really gain that much capacity, as top-working each half from either end works quite well.

you could bore new tunnels each side of the existing ones and have the lines join up in the chalk pitt cuttings and over near old Rochester Station
Not without taking out houses you couldn't - it's chalk so you would need a wide separation of the tunnels.

Build four new bay platforms for the Hallam line services on the brownfield sight north of Globe road and have the throat of these platforms segregated from lines the lines currently used by TPE trains. Platform 17 may have to be closed in order to build a walkway to these platforms.

I think that's being built on, as part of CEG's Tower Works development. You could, potentially, squeeze in a couple of 100m-long platforms south of the existing viaduct. There's around 130m there but you'd have to allow for buffer stops and a wide walkway. And built a viaduct. Not sure who owns that land or what it's being used for at the moment though.

I don't think tram/train would work for the Hadfield/Glossop line, it would have to be reduced in Voltage to 750 VDC since it would be too risky to run two completely different voltages through the same OHLE equipment on the LRV. Putting a sizeable transformer on board would significantly increase weight too. Hopefully lightweight batteries and opportunity charging will soon allow lighter end rail vehicles to operate on branch lines without the need for OHLE, meaning the bridges on the Bolton - Blackburn line could be saved if they have not been demolished for electrification already (not been around that area in a while).
