Any risk of crew shortage on England Euro quarter-final (and semi-/final) day?

With England progressing to the quarterfinals and their next match v Ukraine kicking off at 8pm on Saturday evening is it wise to attempt any kind of rail journey this Saturday evening?

Which operators are heavily reliant on rest day working for Saturday afternoon/evening shifts, and should operators consider cancellations ASAP for the Saturday to prevent intending passengers being reliant on them?

Is it likely that bus operators will face the issues - somehow I doubt it!

The match is taking place in Rome, so I wouldn’t imagine there will be much impact on UK train services.

I think the OP was suggesting more drivers not fancying working that day to watch the game.

Everybody is contracted to work Saturdays. There will be very few, if any, cancellations.

I wouldn’t be so sure. Any operator that has high rates of rest day working will suffer.

If England reach the final, that will be a Sunday and that's where you'll see the service go through the floor.

Everybody assumes everybody is interested in 'the game'. A train journey to get away from it would be my preference.

Depends what TOC. All have very varying agreements on Sunday working & although popular I’m surprised how many are not even interested in football these days.

The roster for Saturday afternoon at the TOC I work at has just been described to me as a disaster. The combination of covid related absence/ daily leave/ lack of rest day volunteers all creates the perfect storm for cancellations galore on Saturday PM.

I suspect that there may not be too many football related cancellations on TfW or Scotrail….!!

I'm sure there will be plenty on services covered by Shrewsbury, Chester and Crewe depots!

Yes, but some people are. And some of those people are traincrew, and some of those will not be rostered to work Sat lates. Ordinarily they might come in on this rest day to cover gaps in the roster, but they won’t.

No, they assume quite a lot of people are interested and they are right.

I’ll ask the question again just in case it was missed. How bad was it yesterday when England played Germany?

If I was going to predict which game would generate the greatest interest (apart from an England final) it would have been yesterday’s fixture and yet I see no reports of transport meltdown as a result.

No issues for most operators, but one operator in particular had a high number of cancellations due to train crew shortages after midday (and it wasn’t EMR)

Why should that come as a surprise?

That being the case, why should we be worrying about Saturday? Or indeed any other day when England play an international fixture.

Precisely. Dont know too many who would throw away their £300 + should we make the final on the Sunday.

I would suggest that any employee who falsely claims they are sick are of course opening themselves up to disciplinary action assuming the TOC investigates.
Happens all the time, and is pretty impossible to take forward as it’s generally impossible to prove. Especially with Covid knocking about.

Depends how you look at it. Saturday will have a higher attendance, trains still have social distancing implications and you are assuming people travelling are going to the game, many won't be but are going to take in the wider occasion and take part.

Because we've seen it before, and should England win on Saturday it will be their best achievement since 1996. And if they go on to win the next game their best since 1966. England in the final would be a very big deal, for fans and non-fans alike.
