Where (and when) could I see 08s working in Scotland?

I've always had a place in my heart for 08s. Don't really know why. I understand they're in higher numbers under preservation than they are on the main line, but the only heritage railway I could go to that has one is Bo'ness (08443) but that one's in the middle of an overhaul!

That gibberish said, is there anywhere in Scotland I could see them? Preferably near Glasgow or Edinburgh. If so, any ideas on where I could get any times? The last thing I'd like is to go out only to find out that it's a day wasted.

Thanks.

Used in mossend yard every day, only trouble is hanging about to see it in action. You could fly up and down on the Motherwell to Cumbernauld service, but pehaps there is somewhere nearby you could set up shop for a gander. Anyone familiar with the area?

East coast still use the but of course it may be more luck than judgement to see them moving stuff around the depot.

Thanks folks. Google Map'd the area and seems there's no where to stand at Mossend. Will look into the EC depot at bit more and see if I can come up with anything more than luck.

I was at Inverness Station on Saturday morning around 103Oam and saw an 08 shunting the sleeper stock.

Yeah,I believe that one's an 09?
It's awkward to try and see it though, I've yet to find anywhere you can get close to see it, and I've never seen it moving myself.

08s. 09s. Who can tell the difference? I doubt a kettle veg ;)-)) like Bittern is bothered anyway.

I'll try and see it again this evening, but I can't guarantee anything 'cos I'll be stuck in the coffin-like confines of a Voyager and it'll be dark anyway.

Yeah, I'm sure I've seen something about it being an 09, but it may be an 08.

If there's an 09 at Craigentinny then it's a new development, as Craigentinny hires two class 08s from Wabtec Rails' stable, as do all East Coast major depots, specifically 08472 and 08615. Usually, both are visible when passing on the ECML.

There's only one class 09 in service shunting passenger stock (for the time being), and that's 09026 with Southern. Until recently, DB Schenker had kept hold of all the national rail registered 09s (except that one).

I'm sure there's occasionally a "guest gronk" in the carriage sidings immediately past Craigentinny depot towards Edinburgh.

Theres also pilots at Polmadie near GLC but rarely see them on the move. More chance of action at Craigentinny. Gone are the days of the 08s at Waverley station.

It was in Wabtec Rail colours.

08472 or 08615 then. :)

On the subject of places in Scotland that still turn up at least one operational gronk, I can think of Millerhill yard and Mossend yard, Polmadie, Craigentinny and Inverness depots, and Springburn works in Glasgow.

As far as I’m aware, not many of these places offer good viewing points from the lineside. There is, or was, a popular viewing spot for Mossend yard, but I can’t locate exactly where.

Gronks, particularly the ones at depots, are used as required more than they are diagrammed specific movements each day, as no two days rolling stock movements will be the same. Seeing one in operation is more down to chance than design.

Operational 08s in Scotland are:
428 Mossend
472 Craigentinny
568 Glasgow Works
615 Craigentinny
788 Inverness
802 Mossend

Mossend used to be visible from the end of a short lane that led down from the main road onto a sort of platform (South of the yard, west of the running lines). I haven't been there for ages, but I've been told that it now has big fences/gates and you can't get in.

PS forgot about the Polmadie 08s, but nothing seems to be listed as being there at the moment. There was one there last time I passed by, but that was ages ago.
PPS there's another shunter listed as being at PO, 01551 (WABTEC) presumably this has replaced the 08.

I've seen the 08s out and about in Inverness, and I've not been specifically looking for them. So I'd say that Inverness is a good one; quite good visibility, although perhaps not quite as much as you'd see at Mossend!
