Yeah west riding isnt parituclarly succesful

As with any Open Access company the numbers increase as time goes by.

An example is GC's 1D75 1420 KGX-BDI 1739. I travelled on this around 2 months ago and then last Thursday and I can tell you that the numbers have increased a good amount.

Neither GC's Sunderland, WSMR's Wrexham or HT's Hull services were busy at the start but now have good numbers of people travelling on them.

Difference there is that a) both HT and W+S manage to run/ran their trains without making a mockery out of their operation, b) W+S aren't doing that well, c) HT actually filled a gap in the market without necessarily relying on a giant ORCATS raid.

Admittedly the loadings on Sunderland route are now high, and I wish them every success with their W Riding route. But I would like it if every time someone gives a truth of GCs shortcomings/failures as a rail operator, a member of the GC Gestapo wouldn't leap blindly into the fray.

When im in doncaster the 12:XX service, is never full there is always an empty coach on the train, and the others are not at all loaded very well, so I hope numbers pick up but I think its because it takes nearly as long to get from Bradford to Doncaster as Doncaster to London on this service.

It's the same with WSMR, although not so much for Hull Trains now, probably due to the recent integration with the First brand.

Agree with what you say though, Grand Central have been nothing but unreliable, and their business pretty much depends on OCRATS raiding.

But none of these is the route we're talking about. The route in question is Kirkgate - Mirfield - Brighouse - Halifax - Bradford.

I have worked empty stock HST from BFD Interchange thru Halifax to Hebden Bridge then at HB crossed over from the up to the down in the station.
Then ECS from Hebden Bridge, via Holroyd JCT thru Elland, Mirfield Healey Mills and Kirkgate to Neville Hill.

Is there any way this can be reduced?

Infrastructure improvements to raise line speeds and resignalling would probably do the trick. But who is going to pay for it? NR/DfT won't as the route is almost certainly not worth the money.

But I would like it if every time someone gives a truth of GCs shortcomings/failures as a rail operator, a member of the GC Gestapo wouldn't leap blindly into the fray.

Indeed. I would also like it if we regularly didn't have people saying the WSMR should take over such and such a franchise, because obviously they would do a much better job than the current operator

For example: They could run SUN-KGX, KGX-Bradford, instead of waiting around for the next Sunderland, so they could make unit efficiencies there. Also it means staff don't sit around for over an hour say, where GC are paying them to do so. Another efficiency made would be better use of platform capacity at Sunderland, Bradford and London KX.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Are you saying they would be ok to go to Bradford do you think?

What is the problem at Bradford?
There is adequate facilities to run into the platforms, and change ends to be in clear in the platforms.
The train can reverse at Interchange and go back to Leeds or upto Halifax.

Interesting, 9K43, to go via Hebden Bridge. So was the problem for the HST the short stretch from Dryclough Junction to Greetland Junction, possibly through the single-track tunnels, or was that section closed for some particular reason?

Plus, of course, WMSR don't use "good" stock that another TOC could easily take and WMSR did chop some of their services to provide a more manageable service

Sadly some people can't take criticism of GC, because they have power cars that make loud noises...

Not for much longer though (or have they all been done?)

Two have been done, two are being done and two remain (me thinks). But in service they are running with an MTU power car so you're only going to see them one at a time.

but it'll be interesting to see how reactions change to GC afterwards...

Indeed it will, I'm sure I heard someone mention that GC were sell outs or words to that effect either on this board or somewhere else on the internet. Not like their trying to run a railway or anything

Might be trying - but still doesn't mean they can actually do it

I still don't see too many people going all the way to Sunderland from London. Many a time I've been on York - Sunderland and most people from London seem to get off at York, there is then the York - Thirsk/Northallerton flow and a few people left to get on/off at Eaglescliffe and Hartlepool. It would be good to see some numbers abut the actual flow of people from Sunderland - KGX and return, but IMO GC will only survive due to the people who go from York - KGX and vice versa, that is where the main profit will be made and the rest will just be a subsidised service running at a loss.

I did a Grand Central trip to York with an HST on their first year... and there were only 15 people in the coach.... Last year the train was well used and I wouldn't be surprised if GC manage to have a 80 percent load factor on their trains.

Same will happen with the Bradford trains.

London-York would obviously be the main flow. I'd imagine a few London-Thirsk/Northellerton/Eaglescliffe, with a few more to Hartlepool and Sunderland.

But I bet the flows from anywhere apart from London - York and vice versa are not profitable. Perhaps the price to pay for having a good market to exploit in York.

I'd say you're right, there isn't really a market like that on the west side though - Wakefield and Doncaster are both good stations for connections, but GC can't/don't offer +connections tickets so East Coast have the upper hand.

There was a problem of GW HST's coming off the Midland at Crofton, and going down Okenshaw Junction to Kirkgate and up to Wakefield Westgate.
When the HST's were coming round the curve into Kirkgate, the red air pipe came undone, causing a full application of the train brake.
This was due to the red air brake pipe being too short, and when the HST was passing Cobra it parted due to the curve of the PW.

Not a problem - as I said in my post above I wish GC every success, any entrepreneurial endeavour to better rail services gets my support. However, I am irked by the ill-informed "GC IS AMAZING AND THE BESTEST TRAIN COMPANY IN THE WORLD EVERRRRRRR" fans who quickly try and bluster their way through.

Your rolling stock problems can be quite farcical at times, which to me indicate a failing at higher levels to get the issue sorted earlier by either using decent contracts to get them refurbed, or getting them replaced/redone without going back to the original supplier.

I also think that the model for the Sunderland route relies on heavy ORCATS extraction on the York - London flow, with the second market being York-Sunderland locals. Admittedly there are through passengers on the route, but they are insignificant in your grand scale of things.

And as I said, I wish you every success with the expansion, and I hope GC continues to do well into the future. But criticism where its due I'm afraid, the same for any rail operator. I appreciate that being such a small company not owned by a larger plc may make it seem like personal attacks, but I'm just as cynical and grumpy about other operators.

Look competition on York-London is a good thing! It stops EC having a monopoly. I'll go into it tomorrow if you want me to cba atm.

But is GC relying on getting ORCATS from that route to survive?

ORCATS is the way fares income is split between TOCs, for example a London - York open return would be split between the TOCs which operate on this route (EC and GC, not sure if any others are included as I don't know exactly how ORCATS works)

In addition to what Jordy said above the main thing about ORCATS is (if I'm understanding the system) that even if GC run a London to Sunderland service that is nearly empty for the whole length of the journey (including London to York) they still get a load of ORACTS revenue. Hence why some people say they are only surviving on ORCATS, if they only got money from tickets they actually sell they would go broke.

Fair enough. Its not just an anti-GC thing (please don't take it personally) - its more of an anti-open-access thing (and anti-Gatwick-Express!). It really comes down to the best way to run the railways and efficient use of stock.

I live in Sheffield. We have two "long distance" lines which pass through - the Cross Country service from Edinburgh/ Newcastle/ Leeds to Birmingham/ Bristol/ South Coast, plus the EMT service from Norwich to Liverpool.

Both of these are incredibly busy and I've seen passengers physically unable to fit onto trains on several occasions (you expect people to stand on many/ most journeys). A lot of local routes around Yorkshire are run by short Pacers which can't cope with demand.

And, to give the personal angle, I used to commute daily to Leeds on Voyagers and if I ever got a seat it was a bonus.

Yet whilst we have people squeezed onto two coach 158s or four coach Voyagers, we have five coach 125mph stock running fairly empty on GC services (almost two hours to do the forty miles from Doncaster to Bradford with passenger loads that could fit onto a 153 with a handful of seats free).

Now, enthusiasts like "odd" services. They get a lot more interested in the "Fridays only service from Stockport to Staleybridge" than they do in the clockwork efficiency of intensely run services around London. Enthusiasts like a "quirk", which is why they tend to love Open Access. I mean, the chance to ride behind a loco (WMSR), Blue/Grey "BR" coaches (WMSR), the chance to travel over a line that had no passenger service until just recently (GC around Pontefract)... they also like things like Valenta engines (GC to Sunderland).

I can see why people like Open Access - its a bit like having a service run by a "heritage" operator rather than a bus company. I get that.

To me, it boils down to "do we want the railways to run efficiently to carry the most people, to match demand, to get people out of their cars" *or* "do we want the railways to have lots of random services and quirky routes to be 'interesting'"?

I can see both sides. And maybe when I was younger I'd have preferred dozens of liveries, I'd have preferred those "once a day Aberdeen to Penzance" routes, those rare workings.

However, nowadays I want clockface timetables (to get the most out of bottlenecks like Welwyn), I want core services and (most importantly to this thread) I want trains used where the demand is. It frustrates me that people can't fit onto some routes daily yet open access operators are using longer trains on emptier services.

In an ideal world there'd be room for Open Access. But, (if you'll pardon the cliche) we are where we are. And in 2010 I don't think we can afford to innovate on all these "interesting" routes (see London - Barrow in Furness - Carlisle too!) - these are a luxury at a time when people are squeezed onto short-formed services like Cardiff - Portsmouth.

Competition is one thing on buses, where there are always spare buses, and they can be easily obtained. We don't have enough trains at the moment (definitely not enough DMUs), and using 180s/HSTs on Open Access seems a real waste to me.

(in fairness, I'd say the same about other expansion on the railways, and any TOC who are wanting to use their stock on "new" routes whilst their existing services struggle - like Chiltern competing for Birmingham trade instead of concentrating on the High Wycombe market - I have a similar problem with Gatwick Express using eight coach EMUs on empty-ish services whilst other BML passengers are crammed Southern services)

Here ends the rant - am sure everyone stopped reading after the first couple of lines!

Long rant

Good points there. I'm all for open access personally, and as a supporter of a rationalised and liberal rail market with a heavy hand in state intervention for pricing.

I agree with one point there, and that is the sourcing of rolling stock. In the market today, I feel that OA operators should have to source their own stock, if their is stock purchased by ROSCOs for TOCs that needs use elsewhere on the network.

My other bone is ORCATS through and through. The best OA proposal I have seen in the Liverpool-Hull. I think a small network of trans-pennine routes from Liverpool, Chester and Shrewsbury to Hull, York and Grantham is a winning combination, with a lot of income from ORCATS on many levels, a decent need to provide that service and relieving passengers off many overcrowded services.
