Hi,

Wondered if someone could help me out here. Have been reading some posts here, and Googled. I *think* what i'm trying to do is legit, but not totally sure.

I need to buy a monthly season ticket from Crewe to Slough. This ticket doesn't exist though, so i have to buy 2 tickets:

Ticket 1) From Crewe to London zones 1-6 (£910.50)
Ticket 2) From West Drayton to Slough (£79.90)

One of my trains (Paddington to Slough) *sometimes* doesn't stop at West Drayton though (let's say for sake of argument, i will always be catching the train that doesn't stop there).

Is this legit?

I don't think so.

You can combine 2 or more tickets for one journey however if the train does not stop at the place where you change from one ticket to another, then this is legit if one of the tickets is a season and the other is not (unfortunately here they are both seasons) or if the tickets are both 'zonal' in this case one is and the other isn't.

If you can replace the West Drayton to Slough ticket with a Zonal ticket (is there such a thing as Boundary Zone 6 to Slough Season?) then it would be legit!

Edit: There is a Slough - London Zones 5-6 season which would do the trick, but this costs around £119 for 1 month, and means you are doubly valid within Zones 5 & 6.

However I believe there is some sort of calculation to create your own season through London, where one does not exist. I can't find the calculation right now. I believe barrykas may be able to help...

Pants :(

What i will have to instead then is:

Ticket 1) From Crewe to London zones 1-6 (£910.50)
Ticket 2) From London Terminals to Slough (£192.40)

This is an extra £112!

I found this from a year ago...
Peter Smyth said:
The rules from the Fares Manual are
***
Season Tickets issued for travel between two stations which are both
outside the Fare Zones area, and which include cross-London travel via
Zone 1 using Transport for London Services, must be issued as a
Travelcard Season and routed 'ZONE R1256 LONDN'. They include unlimited
travel throughout the Zones 1-6 area.

Prices for journeys that are not shown in your TIS or the Fares Finder
can be calculated as follows:
1. Find the 7-Day Travelcard (7TS) fare from the Origin to ZONE R1256
LONDN.
2. Find the 7-Day Travelcard (7TS) fare from the Destination to ZONE
R1256 LONDN.
3. Add the above two 7-Day Travelcard fares together.
4. Deduct the Inboundary 7-Day Travelcard fare for Zones 1-6 (currently
£47·60).
***

So Milton Keynes Central - Slough would be 117.80 + 68.00 - 47.60 =
138.20 per week

A monthly is 3.84 x weekly price and an annual is 40 x weekly.
...so, it should be possible to create a custom season ticket for you that would be valid from Crewe to Slough and include a Travelcard for unlimited travel within London.

Well, no, there is a Slough to London Zones 1-6 for £119. No need to buy from London Terminals. This could be combined with a Crewe to London Zones 1-4 if such a ticket existed however it appears not to exist.

However as far as I can determine, you should be able to purchase a 'custom made' Travelcard season to cover your journey on one ticket.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
1. Find the 7-Day Travelcard (7TS) fare from the Origin to ZONE R1256
LONDN. In this case that is £289.00
2. Find the 7-Day Travelcard (7TS) fare from the Destination to ZONE
R1256 LONDN. In this case that is £65.90
3. Add the above two 7-Day Travelcard fares together. £354.90
4. Deduct the Inboundary 7-Day Travelcard fare for Zones 1-6 (currently
£47·60). £354.90 - £47.60 = £307.30

That is the weekly price.

If you want one month that would be £307.30 * 3.84 = £1180.05 if my calculations above are correct.

For 5 weeks it would vary (as the above is for a calendar month) but you can add on any number of days to make a monthly season and be charged for the extra number of days at the monthly rate.

Bear in mind season tickets may go up drastically in January. It may be worth getting one to last until your final day before the Christmas break, and get a new one before the prices increase (on 2nd January I believe), if you are doing this journey for a year, then an annual is worth considering as you will be paying 2010 prices for the whole of 2011, and also it would act as a Gold Card, getting you various discounts in the South East area (not much use if you are based in Crewe though).
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Something I can't figure out is why the Crewe to London Zone 1-6 7Day season is £289.00 but the monthly is only £910.50. The monthly price should be 3.84 times the weekly, in this case £1109.76. Yet the fare is around £200 lower.

Good luck :)

There may be a cheaper way to calculate it, given that Crewe to London monthly season is further discounted than the 'usual' 3.84 weekly rate. So it may be less than the calculation I quoted above (it really should be!).

I have sent an email to the person who originally quoted the information, and encouraged his input. Also I'll send a PM to barrykas alerting him to this topic, as he may be able to help.

Aren't you valid anyway from Paddington to Slough as Paddington is (or certainly was) a reasonable route from anywhere north of Stafford? And this would open up the option of going Slough - Reading - Birmingham - Crewe?

Ok, have gone and bought the monthly season tickets (plural!). Got 1 month and 3 days:

Ticket 1) Crewe to London Zones 1-6 (£1003.00)
Ticket 2) London Terminals to Slough (£212.00)

The lady suggested i could get ticket 1 approx £55 cheaper by excluding Underground travel, but i'd have to buy an Oyster card with that (i guess not saving much).

Hmm... have just looked at that route. It's a bit slower than Crewe -> Underground -> Slough

Oops, yes I should have realised that.

From the Routeing Guide:-

Crewe to London Group is valid on maps:
CM+GC
CS
LC

LC allows Euston-Crewe (optionally via any of the branches such as Northampton, Birmingham, Bedworth, Stoke, etc)

CS allows Paddington/Maryleone-Banbury-Birmingham-Crewe

CM+GC is similar to CS.

So all that is required is a Crewe - London season. A Crewe-London Zones 1-6 also includes travel on the tube between Euston & Marylebone. Nothing else is required.

Paddington-Slough is on a permitted route for this Season ticket, therefore a London/West Drayton/wherever to Slough is NOT required.

You can start/finish your journey 'short' at any point with a season and you can make unlimited journeys, doubling back or starting/finishing short as you please.

You can get a refund, but an Admin fee probably applies.

Crewe-Paddington via Slough is indeed slower than Crewe-Euston via Milton Keynes, but what matters is that Crewe-Paddington via Slough is a permitted route for this ticket. Therefore you can do whatever journey you like on permitted routes and no additional ticket is required

Sweeeeet! If it works :) Too late to get a refund now. Admin fee is £10 i believe.

On the journey tomorrow, i'll just show my Crewe -> Z1-6 ticket, and hide the London Terminals -> Slough one (just to see if the guard notices)

Watch this space :)

Cheers!

Print map CS (note this map is on 2 pages!) this can be shown if anyone queries it.

Glad to be able to help :)

By the way it is well worth getting the season tickets in 5 (or more) week blocks as required rather than on a per month basis.

e.g. for someone who is on annual leave from 20th December can buy a season from 01/11/10 to 17/12/10 (01 months 17 days) for £1427.40, and then renewing when they are back from annual leave (or, if not back until 2nd January, buy before to get the 2010 price!!) rather than 2 x , monthlies at a much higher price, this is also cheaper than 1 x monthly plus 3 weeklies.

He would need the Crewe to London Terminals plus some other ticket to travel on the underground between Euston and Paddington, surely?

He's got Crewe to London Z1-6, so he's covered.

Ok, so my Crewe -> London Z1-6 worked fine at the barriers at Slough station (both going out of, and going back in), also showed it a guard to get out of the station -- even though Slough is in Zone 7.

Going for my refund tonight :)

Good luck with the refund.

Just to clarify, Slough is outside of the zone system. The reason you are allowed to use the ticket there is because Slough is on an alternative route from Crewe to London. You can use season tickets over any part of any valid route as many times a day as you want.

Thanks everyone for saving me £200/mth :D
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Grrrrrrr <(

Tried to get refund for the £212 ticket, they can't find it on the system though. Woman on ticket desk said it could be due to the fact that both season tickets have the same photocard ref/ID on them (she can see the £1003 one).

Left it with her and she's going to speak to team leader about it tomorrow.

BTW: Refund amount is anytime day return (£10.90) per day (== 1 day) + £10 admin fee
