How should the new Reston station be served?

How will this and East Linton be served? Any plans for a Berwick or Newcastle to Edinburgh stopping service?

There is talk of an Edinburgh to Berwick stopper, being an extension of the existing Scotrail service to Dunbar but no details confirmed as yet.

I think it was 5 per day rather than a full two-hourly frequency

But presumably an hourly or 2 hourly stopper could mean XC, LNER and TPE no longer need to call at Dunbar and could be speeded up as a result?

I imagine many will want Dunbar to retain direct London trains though.

extension of scotrail Dunbar services to Berwick Upon Tweed. However the OHLE power limitations at Marshall Meadows needs to be addressed first. currently there isn't enough power for TPE to operate on electric so adding another electric powered train in the form of a pair of 380s or 385s is currently out of the question

And that's only six round trips daily too. Fewer if the early morning ECS doesn't go through to Berwick-upon-Tweed, or the 2207 from Edinburgh doesn't extend down to Berwick-upon-Tweed with the associated late arrival back in Edinburgh. Unless someone can see them leaving a unit way out there overnight and transporting the crew by road.

However you square it, not efficient.

The upside of having the local Scotrail stoppers provide the service is presumably that it will be more reliable; better than Cross Country trains all the way from Plymouth or wherever.

It has been stated on another forum that the hourly TPE Liverpool-Edinburgh service may be stopping at Reston as well....and also that the frequency of the ScotRail service will be increased, possibly running empty to Tweedmouth to cross over.

The stopper extending to tweedmouth is possible, once the power supply issues are solved (should be mid next year).

TPE “was” supposed to be running a 22:30 Edinburgh-Newcastle that was later than the last LNER (aberdeen-Leeds) and stopped at all the main stations on the way, Dunbar, berwick, alnmouth and Morpeth. its not unreasonable to suggest this service could also make the stop which may fill a gap. the corresponding northbound service which was due to leave Newcastle around 06:00 may also be utilised.

At no point do they mention when they expect the station to open, or give details of likely services, which you would think they would whilst promoting interest in the project through a press release.
Are there yet any definitive proposals on how Reston will be served?

How can it be served without disrupting the frequent fast trains on this key main line?

If the station is being built without any formal proposals for services to call at it, could it become a white elephant?

Reston is in Scotland so should be served by extending the Edinburgh to Dunbar Scotrail service, operators such as Cross Country, LNER and TPE at a push should only call at interchange stations such as Dunbar, Berwick Upon Tweed and Alnmouth between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Extending the Scotrail service is possible by two actions, 1. Building a single platform station at Grantshouse by upgrading the Up loop to passenger service and 2. Upgrading the power supply.

Scotrail services could then continue to Grantshouse to turnback freeing up capacity at Dunbar for more long distance services or a increase of North Berwick services.

That being said I believe building at Reston is simply the wrong location when infrastructure already supports it at Grantshouse IF a station is built there instead

I think East Linton and Reston will end up being served by an either TPE or Scotrail Newcastle- Edinburgh shuttle in the end

Not for those travelling on them!
Having a slightly slower through service is undoubtedly better than changing at Newcastle.

Sadly, the former is really quite unlikely.

I'm not sure I understand the point in TPE operating a shuttle - surely it would be just as easy to operate a through service?

ScotRail might be a sensible operator of a shuttle as an extension of Dunbar services, though.

The point is that a) the available paths between Newcastle and Edinburgh are likely to be very limited, and not at all suited to a continuation of the services into Newcastle (and vice versa). And b) these shuttles would effectively involve putting ECSs into passenger service.

ScotRail might be a sensible operator of a shuttle as an extension of Dunbar services, though.
In many ways, yes, but unfortunately that's not what will end up happening. At least, not next May.

Its not better for the through passengers that will vastly outnumber those using Reston.
if TPE put a shuttle on who is paying for that - the Scottish government I hope??

As I stated - the choice of a through TPE service isn't really on the table.

The latter question is one of several yet to be resolved, but seeing as the services would run either way - whether ECS or in passenger service - I imagine the Scottish Government may refuse to pay for any costs. To be fair, those services may have guards on them even if they run ECS anyway.

Think I am missing something - why are TPE running ECS to Edinburgh?

The 802/2's heavy maintenance is done at Craigentinny.
Well that’s a bit awkward. I assume Doncaster is full?
there is still a cost in inflexibility by making those ECS timetabled passenger trains, and I assume ECS is DOO rather than having to find guards for a handful of long trips.

Indeed it should as it's catchment area is bigger then what Reston could hope to serve.

Personally, I don't see why Dunbar should lose its long distance services when Reston even as a white elephant should only see the local stopping services call there.

Really without the long-awaited ScotRail Edinburgh-Dunbar-Berwick-Newcastle semi-fast, what is the point in serving Reston to the detriment of Dunbar?

For the sake of serving it at all it seems.

Thing is until the power supply is upgraded, there is no point in building a station there especially as one at Grantshouse would make much more sense.

Being pragmatic though, you probably see a parliamentary service serving the station.
