Yesterday, I had a trip to Liverpool and in doing so experienced the old and the new in railway stock.
Pendilino Nuneaton to Lime Street
After the football, TPE To Manchester followed by TPE Manchester to Sheffield.
Finally Sheffield to Loughborough . It was the last journey which brought a smile to my face. IC 125 standing gracefully at Platform 5 and the so spacious Mark 3 coaches. Being in the middle coaches, no hint of any engine noises as it left Sheffield. The ride was so smooth and the journey was so pleasurable.

After travelling on mostly modern stock, the final leg of the journey was the best. The Old Girl certainly takes some beating!

Enjoy it while it lasts, I doubt there will ever be a new build of loco and stock.

I'm still waiting for a ride on a EMT HST only been on midland mainline one when i was like 6, live in leeds for uni now so im gonna try get on one soon :/

I thought it was basically going to be an EMU.

Not quite- the electric version was proposed have motors under carriages, with non-motor pantograph driving trailers- a bit like the class 395, though without every intermediate carriage having motors.
The diesel version replaces the pantograph driving trailers with essentially generator cars- again, no drive motors in the vehicle, but with big diesel engines driving generators to supply the motors throughout the train. The bi-mode version was envisaged as having one of each of these driving vehicles.
There's still trailer (as opposed to motor) carriages in modern EMUs- the Pendolinos have 4 trailers, Electrostars (all varieties) have 1 (the pantograph car) and with electric Desiros only the driving cars are motored. On the older EMUs, there's even fewer motor cars per trailer- in the 317-322 family, there's a single (very noisy) motor coach per set.
