Just been on th 22:22 from southampton after seeing the Gaslight Anthem...

It went in to Eastleigh where we stopped for a good 10 minutes before going to Fareham via the Hedge End line.

Why dosen't it take the normal Swanick route.

This was the last train so was a member of staff heading home?

The guard overided the PIS to announce the call at Eastleigh

Some Southern trains are booked to do that, I think there is one at 13:xx?

Route retention is the most probable reason.

The 1427 ex Southampton goes via Eastleigh every day for eastbound route retention, the westbound in service equivalent runs from Fareham to Eastleigh at about 1655, but there is also a very early westbound ECS.

Going via Eastleigh late at night in service would be additional to normal, so likely to have been either a problem or engineering on the Netley line. However that late service doesn't have a Swanwick call either, so it may have be an unadvertised call at Eastleigh, although the normal route. The two afternoon 'via Eastleighs' show up in journey planners, the 2222 doesn't.

Incidentally the FGW services that run in service via Eastleigh don't have advertised calls either AFAICT.

The 22.22 service is basically a ECS to Littlehampton Depot that happens to take passengers! It comes off the last down service to Southampton. However its leaves only 8 mins after the previous SN which is basically all stations to Littlehampton so there is no path via Netley. It does sometimes go via netley but despite its advertised fast calling pattern it stops at every signal between Southampton and Littlehampton!

I assumed the 1427 went via Eastleigh to make a path available for the Bristol Parkway - Brighton train which departs Southampton at 1432

Yes there's that aspect as well, but even if it wasn't necessary they'd still probably have to fit a couple of Eastleigh trips in for route retention. IIRC one of the Victoria services ran unadvertised via Eastleigh before the Brighton service started.

Thanks for that/ Yeah I noted a 22:13 departure!

The 22:22 had worringly fast turn around I could have been stranded- a warning to anyone catching this service from Soton
