Anyone know how likely these could turn into permanent jobs?

Obviously nothing is guaranteed.....but be useful if anyone had any insight?

Interesting. Once you've qualified and worked the fixed term, if the position doesn't become permanent would you then be able to apply for qualified conductor roles at other TOCs? Or would you have to apply for trainee roles?

Merseyrail roles on the Abellio careers site seem to be few and far between but recent vacancies seem to be temporary or FTC.

Reading between the lines - maybe this is a cautious approach by HR to simply subject new employees to a 'probationary' period.

If the new staff members prove they are more than competent in their new role, I'm sure it would lead to a permanent contract of employment further down the line (no pun intended!)

To train guards/conductors for X number of months costs a TOC time and money, so it will be very odd just to lay that person off, unless of course they are completely unsuitable or incompetent in the role.

Guards are still technically in dispute over DOO. Initially, Merseyrail/Merseytravel (MR/MT) have agreed to keep guards on on the new stock that was supposed to come in 2020 March, due to various issues this didn't come to fruition. As it stands, guards who currently work there (particularly those who are on temporary contract) do not know their future once 777's are rolled out. Temporary contracts are nothing to do with your abilities/performance/attendance etc. - they have probation for that.

Yes this is likely why the position is temporary. It's very rare to see fixed term crew contracts.

There must now be a backlog of units waiting to come through the tunnel into the UK. When was the official expected entry into full service. I suspect it will be put back a few years now with all that's gone on? One things for certain,it will be interesting when we start seeing regular new...

It would be interesting to know what type of contract (duration) is on offer. I'm led to believe from an old School friend who works there that the current Temp Guards are on 3 Month rolling contracts and the latest contract extension expires next Month. Could be a good route into the railway, gain experience and move on to another TOC if the Guards are not kept.

Correct.
I can only guess that guards will be needed as long as current stock is in place.
As for 777's, it's all speculation at this stage. Testing is being carried out overnight, however none of the drivers have even been on the train.
