An off-peak return valid all weekend is £42.20.

You can get advance tickets for £14.50 each way (ie £29 return) at 07:38 (change at Leeds and York) on the 23rd and 19:48 (again, change at York then Leeds) on the 24th. All other advance tickets currently cost £18 (ie £36 return), but are only available on a few services.

If you're over 55 you can get a return Leeds>Durham for £15 (standard) or £25 (first class) on TranspennineExpress trains only, plus the cost of a Shipley > Leeds and a Leeds > Shipley single

Interesting aside - when looking for split tickets I note that the cheapest single option, and the cheapest (well only) non-day return between Northallerton and Durham are first class tickets! They're East Coast trains only so you are restricted to only a handful of trains a day but that's a very bizarre ticketing situation! Are there are any other stations for which the cheapest walk-on fare is a first class ticket?

There's nothing cheaper than the advance tickets and nothing of significant cost savings. You can do it for £39.80 splitting at Thirsk: to do this you'll need to get a Leeds > Middlesborough TranspennineExpress train and then change at Northallerton for a Durham bound train.

Glasgow - Berwick has an Anytime Single costing more than a First Anytime Single at £25:50 (eg weekday dep. GLC at 06:50).

I'd expect that there's others.

The XC only option? But there's also a cheaper standard class XC only option available between Berwick and Glasgow. For Northallerton to Durham there is no cheaper anytime ticket than the first class East Coast only, as East Coast don't offer a standard class EC only ticket. In fact, the east coast first class only ticket is cheaper than an advance standard class ticket on Cross Country! The cheapest way to travel from Northallerton to Durham is to buy a ticket for first class.
