The much photographed signal gantry at Scarborough was removed last Thursday. A few photographs...
The last picture shows the span being cut in half so that it could be transported by road to York to be modified ready to go to Grosmont.

Rumour has it early in the new year but I think that's a tad optimistic.
It will be more interesting to see how long it takes the NYMR to get it into operation...

I think as far as the agreement with NWR and the Listed status of the structure it has to be reerected within a specified timescale.
Also as it will span all NYMR tracks at Grosmont it may need possession of the Esk valley line so work can continue in the space between NYMR and the rest of the world.
Best time for that will be prior to Sunday services restarting in 2011.
I think some time in January is the preferred period.

Very sad that this has gone. Scarborough used to be such a wonderful place on a summer Saturday as train after train departed to places all over the north of England (and even Scotland), with a fantastic variety of locos, and lengthy trains up to ten coaches long. There was enough shunt release and stock positioning work to keep two station pilots very busy indeed. And all framed by the magnificent array of semaphores.

And then, sometime in the late 80s or early 90s, the public discovered their cars. What better way to spend a Saturday than crawling slowly along the ghastly A64, then drive around and around with blood pressure going off the scale as you try to find a parking space at the resort? Ah! The freedom to own your own car and go anywhere as you please!

That's where I live. Sad times.

I remember when the glorious array of semaphores at Seamer were also pulled down. Me and a friend went to watch. Torture. :(

On the plus side, at least it's going to good use. :)
