The 745/755 fleet fire alarms are quite clever in this sense for detecting smokers. The alarms in the toilets will give us a TCMS warning but they don't start the full sequence because its more than likely a smoker but please investigate asap. The alarms in the engine bay however do act as if its a far more serious issue.

Was at Sheffield earlier and noticed the following on the automated announcemt:

"Platfotm 2 for the 1028 East Midlands Railway service to London St Pancras International. Calling at Chesterfield, Derby, Leicester and London St Pancras International. Please note that smoking is not permitted on this train."

There were smoking facilities in 1st Class as well you know !!

I remember a number of trains which carried an "all first class accommodation is non-smoking" note in the timetable, mainly loco-hauled Cross Country services with a Mark 2 first class buffet vehicle.

I’ve seen some people smoking (usually drunks) on the late night trains on the Ayrshire line. Probably because it’s not uncommon for their to be no conductor on site at that time of night.

slighly off topic but I remember on my last train journey (early March 2020) two girls drinking alcohol asked for a child fare claiming to be 15 when the conductor said no because they were either underage drinking or trying to fair dodge they started hurling abuse and making all the passengers feel uncomfortable.

Smoking on trains persisted up to 2005, much later than I'd anticipated. They were absolutely gross. I spent a lot of time in pubs at the time and smoking carriages were next level vile.

In answer to your question in the last paragraph, driving cabs aren't totally air tight.

I've had a gentleman sit behind my cab who stank of cannabis.

At the next station, I politely asked him to go and sit somewhere else as it was distracting me. He was apologetic and went and sat elsewhere.

Maybe in this instance, someone was smoking in the leading coach?

He went down to have a word with the smoker, opened the door and got a mouthful of fumes. After he had the word, he went off to the TCS and told him that he needed to go home on full pay. "Why?" the TCS said. He replied "because if I get random D & A tested, I will test positive for cannabis".

That’s an interesting one, and the guard was probably wise to book off. Not sure if there’s any official guidance on what to do in that situation. As a minimum, inform the relevant crew supervisor / manager, comply with their instructions, and ensure it’s all logged.

Yup 29/8/2005, I have a GNER cardboard sign that was on all the GNER Trains at the time.

It's worth bearing in mind that only a few TOCs permitted smoking this late. The very last smoking accommodation was lounge cars on ScotRail sleepers.

Out of curiosity, do you know the exact date when smoking was stopped in the lounges? It was never possible in my time using the sleeper.

Afraid not, but it wasn't far short of the Scottish ban on smoking in public places in 2007.

Edit: just found a Daily Mail article from 9 Oct 2005 saying it was about to be banned on the Sleepers, but there was no implementation date stated. The article stated this was the last remaining smoking accommodation on trains after GNER implemented a ban in August 2005.

Edit again! 9th Oct 2005 was the implementation date.
