Shutting down the channel ports will make not make any difference
Evidence from countries that have successfully contained the virus at extremely low or Zero levels suggest sealing ones borders to almost everyone except their nationals via a very strictly enforced quarantine system is a vital part of that success .

Agreed that if you want to stop importing the virus sure. That post was in the context of illegal channel crossings however

Just a gentle reminder of our forum rules, which also provide information on what to do if any post causes concern

Some posts have had to be removed (if the correct procedure was followed we would only have had to remove one post)

A link to the rules is at the bottom of every page.

Thank you.

Masks are very effective... at getting people to relax, have a false sense of security, stand close in queues* and when getting off trains (particularly at termini). If you wanted to design a product that would spread the virus, you’d struggle to come up with a better solution.

*as I posted, on here, from my personal experiences on the first weekend after face coverings in shops were made mandatory
Herd immunity strategy by the back door?

Herd immunity is a naturally occurring phenomenon rather than a 'strategy'
Well I know I am a scientist after all, but a government can pursue a course of action aka a strategy whereby they let things occur naturally as they would have on their own sorry if I am not wording well.

France are now in the process of easing their second lockdown, although not all hospitality is reopening immediately, with bars and restaurants having to wait until the 20th January:

France will begin to ease its strict coronavirus lockdown restrictions this weekend, allowing shops and cinemas to reopen, President Emmanuel Macron says.

People will also be able to share "moments with the family" over the Christmas period, Mr Macron said.

He said that France had passed the peak of the second wave of virus infections.

The country has reported almost 2.2 million cases and more than 49,000 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

In a televised address on Tuesday evening, Mr Macron said that restrictions would be eased from the 15 December for the festive period, with general travel restrictions lifted, as long as new infections stay at 5,000 a day or less.
Looking at their confirmed cases' graph, it does appear to be a very sharp increase and decrease. Even though this won't have captured everything, this is perhaps an indicator of the effects of an early and harsh lockdown in spring delaying cases further:

So takeaway (à l'emporter) only for France this Noël? Wow count our blessings unless we end up in Tier 3.

Make that a third lockdown now for France:

French schools will close for at least three weeks as part of new national restrictions to fight rising Covid cases, President Emmanuel Macron says.

Mr Macron said that schools would move to remote learning from next week.

Lockdown measures, introduced in 16 areas of France earlier this month, are also being extended across the country.

All non-essential shops are to close from Saturday and there will be a ban on travelling more than 10km (six miles) from home without good reason.

The country is facing a peak of over 5,000 people in intensive care.

France has so far reported more than 4.6 million cases of coronavirus and 95,495 Covid-related deaths.

"Quel dommage - confinement en France en même temps que déconfinement au Royaume Uni. Qui l'aurait pensé. J'essaye de ne pas rire"

"What a pity. Lockdown in France at the same time as lockdown releasing in the UK. Who would have thought it. I am trying not to laugh"

Perhaps if they hadn't been messing about trying to talk down the AZ vaccine and been administering it instead they may not be in such a mess? Hopefully the French will all be pointing this out to Macron?

I do wonder what the odds are of a "jilet jaunes 2" in response to this latest lockdown, particularly as they won't be the first country to have unrest in response to restrictions.

EDIT: Seems me and Cowley had the same idea at once

This just seems like a mess that could have been avoided doesn’t it?

Especially as this latest lockdown will be coinciding with spring weather. The atmosphere here has already turned a bit wild over the last few days, we’re just out for a brief walk and the roads are positively roaring with traffic, and that’s with hospitality still closed.

This is the weather forecast for Paris, where if unrest needs warm and/or dry weather they'll have plenty of it tomorrow, and while cooler at the weekend I can see conditions supporting it still then:

As has been said by others, it's better to stick to one strategy all the way than change it after going a fair way with the first one (in terms of balancing lives saved with other health/economic matters), even if the one being changed to would have been better from the start. We saw it with the first lockdown last year, and in a way with the second one. The French Government could have learned from this, but it seems they haven't.

Le Figaro reports...

"Covid-19: 59,038 new cases in 24 hours, 5,053 patients in "critical care"...."

It's not looking good at the moment.
Now Macron is asking Putin to supply the Sputnik vaccine.

Part of the EU's dithering in placing orders for the vaccine, was Macron arguing for and winning a big slice of the vaccine order for French Pharma company, Sanofi.
He succeeded in convincing the EU to place an order for 300 million doses from them, even though it was known that the company would be unlikely to produce a viable vaccine before the later half of 2021.
As of today, Sanofi have not yet got a viable vaccine and have succeeded in delivering Zero doses.

Wow, I never realised that. So Macron was basically channelling his inner Brexiteer (or Frexiteer) - the irony of it! - and pulling down the rest of the EU with him?

Madness.

I see that Belgium is also having another lockdown from Monday until Mid-December.

You should post that today and see how many people take it seriously rather than a "poisson d'avril" (April Fool)
