Van anyone help me identify this film?

I don't have much details on it, but here's what I do have.

It was set during WW2 with plenty of children being evacuated (I believe we see a steam loco in it at some point but I could be wrong). The story follows a young boy who's sent to live with an old man who keeps himself to himself. The old man becomes impressed when he learns that the boy can draw a straight line without the aid of a ruler.

And that's all I got. It's been years since I seen the film. Can anyone help me out?

Fantastic movie and book, I urge everyone who hasn't seen or read it to give it a go. Was part of my English coursework in high school, which had many good reads in it. There Is A Happy Land, The Triffids, good books. Shame it also had Lord Of The Flies as well, never met anyone else who liked that one.

EDIT: Crikey, never realised the book was written in 1981. The more you know, eh?

yes thats definately Goodnight Mister Tom on Tv it had John Thaw as Tom Oakley, in the end Tom adopts the young lad when his mother runs off and leaves him. The London rail scenes were filmed at Loughborough and the country scenes were at Arley (svr) useing 2 different locos which led to a continuity error in that both locos have the same number but the loco changes colour from wartime black to brunswick green en-route.

Lord of the Flies is a great book. So now you can't say you've never 'met' anyone who liked it.

Yep thats deffinatly Goodnight Mister Tom

Brilliant book and film. Shame they cut quite a bit of the story in the film adaptation. Loads happends in the book that doesn't in the film. But that happends in most film adaptations. Some of the Harry Potter films were bad for that, especialy the most recent few. Going OT but for the 7th I heard they havn't cut anything, which is why its in two parts?
