GTR - Trainee Train Driver vacancies (07/12/20)

I applied for GTR in December but have had nothing back at all apart from the confirmation email that they would be in touch. Should I assume that I'm not through to the next stage? I have heard some people have had emails to say they haven't been successful so hearing nothing makes me wonder

Don't assume anything until you directly hear back from recruitment. As others have said they are manually sifting through 21k applications and so it will take time. At this stage no news is good news.

I applied around this time last year and passed the mini scaat in May. Been waiting ever since for an assessment date. The centres were open inbetween lockdowns but were for critical business needs. I emailed a few weeks ago and the reply was

‘We're waiting for further assessment slots to become available.

As soon as we have these, we'll be in touch’

have to keep the faith and just wait it out

Thank you for your reply! Well it does seem like a we’re in for a long wait! As long as I know eventually I’ll get to the assessment centre my mind has been put at easy! I’m forever hopefully that there be in touch soon! All the best buddy!

Well done and good luck for Friday. Looks like we were offered the same dates, due to prior commitments I went with the 15th though. Out of interest, have you gone through all the practice material they supplied, and if so, did they all seem incredibly easy to you?

I haven’t been able to go through it as I have a 4 month old baby to look after and husband at work: I have a thousand pages of group bourdon to practice with and going through the practise material all day/evening tomorrow just hoping that will be enough!! I didn’t realise most people book it weeks even months in advance so they could practise facepalm.

Honestly, whilst some may, I didn’t find that I needed (or wanted), more than to familiarise myself with the materials so I had an idea of what to expect. Not being surprised and therefore helping to ease your tensions is more valuable than thousands of sheets of bourdon or other practice. You risk stressing yourself out.

I passed to enhanced and probably did about 20 sheets of Bourdon practice (concentrating on the patterns that could appear and accuracy), and briefly overviewed everything else. Trying to concentrate on the basics of each test. Mostly they aren’t things that practice will improve your ability to master, instead looking past the distractions to the task you must perform is more important.

The tests are designed to put you under pressure, by ultimately being too long to complete in the time given or introducing excess or not useful information.

Others are purely matters of concentration and being relaxed rather than swamping yourself with endless hours of repetition will stand you in good stead.

Get a good nights sleep. Read over what the TOC sent you but don’t go mad. A bit of PlayStation might even help ready your hands for the coordination test.

Sorry, I probably should have stated, I'm from a recruitment drive back at the start of last year and have completed all stages.

It seems a lot of stages and it does take time but stick with it.

I saw others posting dates so I took a look back at mine.

I also received my invite to complete GTR-1 this morning. I applied on 11 December.

I applied to Southern and TL in December. Got an immediate no from Southern. Did my SJT for TL at the start of January, and mini-SCAAT in mid-January. I was invited to an assessment centre and had it booked in for the middle of Feb, but was called by recruitment today and they've cancelled the date of my assessment due to unavailability of assessors. So now I'm just waiting to hear from them again, which is a bit deflating but hopefully only a minor hiccup.

Thank you for this I am at the moment consistently getting 11 lines down the bourdon and only missing one. Trying to get that down to missing none and then should be golden

I would once again advise against contacting HR. It has been said countless times: 21000 APPLICATIONS - BE PATIENT.
It takes time in normal times, let alone with so many applications... At least two people in this forum have phoned HR and had the same response, patience my friend - patience. It is a really hard wait but we are all in the same boat

You need to be "on it" with those emails for dates. 3 times I caught it too late because all the dates were taken before I could book one in.

Good luck guys with your Assessment dates when you get them! I went on my assessment day today! It was quite good! The practice you can do online some of them way over complicate what is in the actual tests which were much simpler than what you read about.
I would recommend practicing a few pages of group bourdon now, and do some the night before/on the way there even better.
The training materials they give you I would say is enough. So don’t stress too much! Unless there is something in the booklet you really don’t get.
Oh and practice memorising a page of text/information and get someone to ask you questions based on that text.
you can’t really practice the computer tests at all. Also, they would usually send you home after any test you do throughout the day, if you fail it. But they keep you there for the entire day as they aren’t marking after every test due to Covid. And will find out a week after. Fingers crossed for me. Good luck to you

Yes that’s exactly right. That was so simple! I watched a YouTube vid of someone doing an extra complicated version of this with different tones, trying to find a telephone number for a certain company with a certain symbol lol. The test was much easier!!

Yes that’s exactly right. That was so simple! I watched a YouTube vid of someone doing an extra complicated version of this with different tones, trying to find a telephone number for a certain company with a certain symbol lol. The test was much easier!!

Thank you for confirming, the tones test was what I failed on a year and a half ago as I didn’t expect it so just wanted to know so I can start practicing if I get an invite to assessment, cheers!

This was comforting to read - I have my assessment centre on Monday 15th and have been very nervous! Did you have to do the MMI on the day too? Or was it just the tests? Also (assuming you’re female like me) - what did you wear please? I don’t want to go too over (or under) dressed!

As has been noted be patient and don't call recruitment, they are still sifting applications there are over 21,000 to get through, I work for GTR and know that they simply dont want to be badgered by applicants, they will come to you when it is time

Thank you for the update. Can I ask with Bourdon test, how long do you get per page? I’ve printed some off to practice but no idea on the timings.
Also do you need to listen to beeps whilst looking at a directory?
