Hi all

I need to buy an annual season ticket to travel between Wimbledon and West Brompton.

The National Rail website gives two prices: £528 and £760.

It doesn't elaborate (see attachment), so am I right in thinking that the former is a paper ticket and is a point-to-point allowing travel between Wimbledon and West Brompton only, and the latter is a paper Zone 2-3 Travelcard?

If so:

1) Can I buy either or both of these at Wimbledon station, which is run by South West Trains, to take advantage of their "six free weekend tickets" offer?

2) Would said offer apply to both the above tickets or just the point-to-point?

3) If I buy at Wimbledon, do I have to buy these as paper tickets or can I get one or both loaded onto my Oyster card?

TIA

Suze

I could be wrong, but as far as I'm aware Wimbledon - West Brompton isn't priced by South West Trains, so you wouldn't get their Gold Service scheme regardless of where you buy. The same applies to the travelcard.

Sorry, not sure what pricing by ATOC means/what difference it would make?

South West Trains do not run to West Brompton and to benefit from the six free weekends you have to use SWT services.

1. Free weekend tickets are only for Gold Card holders who buy their tickets at South West Trains outlets and use our services.

2. Free tickets issued within our Gold Service programme are not provided for Travelcard Season Tickets, with the exception of All Zones Travelcard Season Tickets.

Thanks for clearing that up :)

Does anyone know the answer to my Oyster query - can I get the point-to-point loaded onto an Oyster, or are they just for Travelcards/PAYG?

I meant my Oyster query in this thread re the season ticket <D

Suze

Sorry, I'd missed that bit.

You can only load travelcard seasons on an Oystercard.

You're right that the former is a point-to-point allowing travel between Wimbledon and West Brompton only, and the latter is a Zone 2-3 Travelcard. But not necessarily on paper. It is implied, but not stated explicitly, that the SWT-issued season ticket will be on paper. Hopefully an Oyster expert such as MikeWh will be able to confirm that.

Yes, you can buy either at Wimbledon. The Travelcard will allow you to take advantage of the SWT "six free weekend tickets" offer. My opinion differs from that implied by CompactDstrxion on the question of the point-to-point ticket.
South West Trains do not run to West Brompton and to benefit from the six free weekends you have to use SWT services.
The National Routeing Guide allows travel between Wimbledon and West Brompton via Clapham Jn. If travelling by that route, SWT services must be used between Wimbledon and Clapham Jn. Therefore my opinion is that a Wimbledon - West Brompton ticket qualifies in the same way that a Woking - West Brompton one does: part of the route is on SWT and part is not.

If the six free weekend tickets are important to you, I would try to get this in writing from SWT before giving them the money.

This thread has assumed that a National Rail Wimbledon - West Brompton season ticket is valid on LU District Line. It's obvious to me that it ought to be valid, but I can't actually find any proof that it is. The list of interchangeable routes doesn't include it. The only entry for West Brompton is
National Rail tickets which include validity between West Brompton and Willesden Junction (via West London Line) are also valid on LU / DLR services via District and Bakerloo Lines interchanging at Paddington.
Does anyone else know of a document giving specific validity via Fulham Broadway? In the absence of one, I suspect validity may rely on the fact that almost all services are by a through (Underground) train. I'll ask Daniel, our LU expert.
3) If I buy at Wimbledon, do I have to buy these as paper tickets or can I get one or both loaded onto my Oyster card?
As above, I hope MikeWh will answer this.

I'm not sure about that, an Esher - Zones 2-3 would as that is from outside the zonal boundary and priced by SWT, but I don't think a Wimbledon - Zones 2-3 would. Could be wrong, but the latter is not a SWT ticket.

I thought I had answered the Oyster question, but just to re-iterate, you cannot load point-to-point season tickets onto an Oyster card; you can only load travelcard seasons. I also agree that Wimbledon->Clapham Junction->West Brompton is a valid route and does involve SWT trains so should qualify for the free travel offer.

A zones 2-3 season ticket would not qualify, but a Wimbledon to West Brompton should because one of the obvious routes involves Wimbledon to Clapham Junction which can only be done using SWT trains. The ticket would have to be purchased at Wimbledon station (or another SWT one) rather than West Brompton.

Thanks for your reply. In fact, I had assumed the point-to-point would not be valid on the District Line, but it would be much better for me if it were... let me know what Daniel says!

The good news: Daniel replied promptly.
The bad news: It was to say that he has just started a holiday!

He has sent an email to the appropriate LU department. Expect a response when he gets back in about a fortnight.

But the quote you then provide doesn't say that just because one of the stations isn't served by their trains that means you don't qualify. It just says "use their services", so if it's valid on SWT services, then I don't see a problem. Would Waterloo to Shalford not be acceptable? Seems harsh to refuse that if a Waterloo to Guildford is acceptable. And where is such an exclusion documented?

Winchester to Crowthorne, which is a similar example, certainly qulifies for free tickets.

I think you could travel Wimbledon to Clapham Junction by FCC + Southern via Streatham ....

Suzey - I apologize for this taking so long. I've given up with waiting for T&R, and have literally just sent another email to a specific person who provides our revenue update.
Obviously things will be disrupted tomorrow, but hopefully he'll drop me a line by the end of the week...

Hello Daniel,

TfL has no Point to Point tickets, all now being zonal as you are aware, therefore the ticket would only have validity for NR Services. Although NR services serve both West Brompton and Wimbledon, they are not joint running services and generally, point to point season tickets are cheaper than the Travelcard zonal option, although I do not have the fare for Point to Point seasons.

If they wish to travel to travel to Wimbledon on LU services they will need to purchase a Zone 2-3 Travelcard.

All the best,

Sorry Suzey.

I thought I had answered the Oyster question, but just to re-iterate, you can load point-to-point season tickets onto an Oyster card just like you can also load travelcard seasons. .

I'm afraid that this is not the case - Oyster in London covers only Travelcards and PAYG - rail-only season tickets cannot be loaded onto a card and are issued in paper form.

Thanks for that. I'll be having words with a friend who assured me that he had done this. I've corrected the earlier posts. On reflection it does make sense because TfL do not sell point-to-point seasons, only travelcards.

Sorry for any confusion.

It is possible to do, but it isn't an advertised product AFAIK.

So maybe my friend was right? And the Oyster helpdesk wrong. But then considering that they told me that there definitely was no pink reader at Woolwich Arsenal on Friday, yet there it was less than 24 hours later ...

There are times when I really hate the Oyster system.<D;)

You cannot load point to point season tickets on an Oyster card at the moment.

Presume that's a no then, you'd know what I was talking about if they did. That means that any product you load onto an Oyster is done wholly on the TOM?
