Excluding the 950, maybe some of the Strathclyde branches, e.g. Gourock, Wemyss Bay, Balloch, Neilston, Larkhall, Lanark etc? What about Bellgrove-Bathgate?

156s ran to Largs in service last year IIRC and have covered most of the “main” routes either in service or ECS.

Don't think that London Marylebone to Aylesbury via Amersham has been mentioned - but given they haven't ever had tripcocks they could only operate as 165-15X-165, which I doubt would ever happen.

When all the 155s were withdrawn due to door issues, a train of 6 156s ran ECS from Inverness to Cardiff to take over their workings. Unfortunately I don't have any info as to what route they took.

Am I write in saying that the furthest south east 156s have ever been is Portsmouth? I know that there were some Pompey 156 diagrams many many years ago. I wonder if they ever made it along the Coastway to Brighton
In normal passenger service that is probably correct, but as I mentioned earlier in this thread, 156502 reached Dover enroute to Holland in 1989.

I’m sure I’ve seen a 150 at Ilkley.
I can think of at least two occasions when I've caught one to or from Menston, so yes. Somewhere I have a photo of 150207 at Bradford FS in First North Western colours.

Pacers appeared at times on the Chester - Hooton - Helsby shuttles, but I don't recall any 15X units in the late 1980'/early 1990's prior to electrification.
Yes, i deffo remember seeing 142s in orange, blue, and chocolate & cream working those Chester to Helsby via Hooton trains. But im not sure if any 15x sets worked across it. I would imagine they mustve done if they were short of a 142.

That’s a little before my time, though I would be inclined to say that they did. But not 100% sure.

Pacers certainly operated through to Hooton; there is a picture of one mounted on the wall outside the ticket office!
Yes you are correct I did have a two car 156 on a afternoon pm service from helsby to Chester via hooton back in summer 1992. After 108 dmus ended. Just before 101s and 142s was commonly used on this line. Which in turn got replaced by emus due to ellesmere port electrification. On a network north west rail rover zone 3 day ticket remember them at the time. But that's keeping those old special day tkts brief only for this thread.

There is a picture of the cavalcade crossing Culloden viaduct which I have seen numerous times on this forum. Appreciate that this doesn't narrow the route down too much

I witnessed them arriving at Cardiff - which is just as poor at narrowing down the route!

Chester-Hooton-Helsby and Bidston-Wrexham went over to Pacers at much the same time as Merseyrail reached Hooton. At that time the 150/1s were based at Derby and working long-distance services, more likely to appear at Chester bound for Holyhead.

Then all the Pacer problems happened and Chester spent the next five years accumulating all the DMUs nobody else wanted. Bidston-Wrexham became one of the last strongholds of the all-blue Class 104s and it was far from unheard of for one Chester-Helsby diagram to be covered by an ex-Strathclyde Class 101 passing another formed of an NSE- liveried unit.

Not sure if a 156 has made it to Tweedbank since it opened. 158s definitely go there though.

Merseyrail lines (excluding Hunt’s Cross, Chester, Bidston, Southport) ?

Fenchurch street and environs ?

Charing Cross ? Cannon Street ? -London Victoria ?
I seem to recall a 158 (or maybe a pair) travelling to Hillside for the Open golf one year... went up the freight line from Wavertree, on at Bootle, dropped off at Hillside and went on to Southport. I seem to remember a piece on it in Rail and I'm sure it mentioned it getting stones or bottles thrown at it in the slightly less salubrious areas of north Liverpool. I could of course have made all that up.

Berwick to Dunbar has seen 142/143, 150, 156, 158 & 159s regularly over the year

Never heard of class 156 going to Tweedbank, might be driver training issues perhaps?

They have been diverted via Mount Florida Im sure . I think the Milngavie branch has had 156s years ago. Not sure about other branches.

Tweedbank is either 2x158 or 170

Are we including the 950 in this thread? If so the locations available will go down quite a bit ;)
Yes I remember when the 13:00 Newcastle - York, via Sunderland and Middlesbrough, was booked a 156. I never used it all the way through but it must have been quite the stagger. There were a handful of Newcastle - York trains via the coast each day as I recall.

That's the one! long journey to York.

Yep. There was a tunnel closure (Knightswood?) between Westerton and Anniesland in the 1990s or early 2000s IIRC so for the duration of the closure Milngavie was served by extended Maryhill trains

Has a 15x been to Hadfield? I know there was once a New Year's Day set of diversions which resulted in it being worked by DMUs from Victoria, but they were I believe Pacers (I had a ride on it myself).

I know Buxton services ran from Manchester Victoria and Denton to Stockport, whether this was the same time

There were 150s used as well in the days Scotland had some. Personally witnessed but don't ask me how they were crewed

Only depots to sign the 150s AFAIK were Edinburgh, Glasgow QS, Stirling, Perth and Dundee, possibly Aberdeen as they did circles on occasion as well but not 100% sure.

Thanks both for clarifying.
During the very early 1990s when the Stourbridge Town branch was being worked by both 121s and 153s, both 150106, and 150122 worked it. On 2 occasions around the sane time I know 158s also worked it. Never saw a 156 tho.

Have they been down Airedale and wharfedale lines?

Every day on the Airedale when they works Leeds-Carlisle trains.

Around 2010-2012 ish, there was a regular diagram which used any 2 Pacer or Sprinter units in multiple, covering a 333 on the Airedale and Wharfedale lines.

It's also not beyond the realms of reasonable possibility that Sprinters could have been used along with Pacers before the lines were electrified.

Can't be certain as it's a long time ago, but I think I had the odd 155 and 156 amongst the sea of 142s & 144s before the wires went up.

IIRC, a 155/156/158 took the detour from Hove to Preston Park and back to down to Brighton once I believe ... 90s ???! Don't quote me on this however

I also know of a 158 that would routed towards Arundel, though not sure that really counts for the discussion

It's quite feasible for one to have made it to Preston Park (and reverse) when engineering work had shut Hove tunnel, though I don't know if any actually did.

Yes, the Brighton - Cardiff service used 156's before the 158's took over. Seen here at West Worthing...
