My uni is in Middlesbrough, I'll be living in York and my boyfriend lives in Hull. Can I get a season ticket from Hull --> Middlesbrough and get off at the stop in York? Also, can I also use a Hull --> Middlesbrough season ticket at times when I'm going directly between Hull --> York? Sorry if it's a stupid question... I'm new to the UK!

Thanks so much for your help!

Yes, of course :) A season ticket is valid via York (in fact you can't do this journey avoiding York by train!) so you can get off there. All trains call at York.

A season ticket between Hull & Middlesbrough costs £470.10 per month (this can be extended to any period up to 1 year, e.g. you could buy them in 5-week blocks).

It may be cheaper to pay for individual journeys if you are only doing the journey 2 or 3 times per week, especially if you get yourself a 16-25 Railcard ( see www.railcard.co.uk ) if you are a full time student you are eligible.

With a 16-25 railcard, York - Hull return is £13.60 if you avoid Doncaster (direct trains or change at Selby), valid at any time, return within 1 month, or £12.50 return same day, or £12.00 after 0930.

York-Middlesbrough is £6.95 for a same day return if you avoid Darlington (direct trains or GC to Eaglescliffe) after 10am, or £10.50 between 9am and 10am returning same day, or £17.45 if departing before 9am and/or returning a different day.

Fares in this country are confusing unfortunately, but we can help with any questions you have :)

I just found something called the North East 7 Day Rover... which covers Hull, York and Middlesbrough, and accepts the 16-25 rail card. I think it would come up to under £200 a month. Do you think that's a better idea? or am I missing something? It says something about not being valid on Hull Trains, but Hull is on the map. What's that all about? Are there different train companies? Is my ticket valid on any of them or how does it work. Thanks again for your help.

In England, our rail network is run by different companies, (First) Hull Trains, is one and you can't use that ticket on their trains :)

Yes. The North East 7 Day Rover is a good product at £57.45 with a 16-25 Railcard. It is described in full in a very good leaflet from Northern Rail which can be downloaded here. There is also a version valid for any 4 days in 8 consecutive days for £49.50 with a Railcard.

My only doubt is that it is not valid before 0845 Monday-Friday. That may be too late for attendance at college.

that's been debated several times before but I disagree that HT can enforce this, however I've used Rovers on HT before (usually Nor h East) with no problems whatsoever. I asked the guard before departure from Donny earlier this year to be sure.

As has been said, that is perfectly fine. You'll have to change anyway in York from Hull to get to Middlesbrough.
