See in Britain something like this wouldn't worry me but we don't have a gun culture, I wonder how long it will be before one of these "excuses of a human being" starts shooting?

WTF, You basically told them to do it so you have no right to try to say what they are doing is wrong. Plus with your views on law enforcement how can you even try to pretend you are the better "man".

Trump has finally brought the US down to the level of the likes of Venezuela. A country ruled by a corrupt and criminal despot clinging on to power by inciting his fanatical followers to overturn the votes of the electorate by force.

If he's still in the White House in two weeks, I'm starting to think he will barricade himself in, and call on his supporters to arrive with their pickups and machine guns and surround the building to protect him.

Surely a majority of Republican congressmen must finally see the huge damage Trump's insane behaviour and barefaced lying is doing to the US's reputation in the world? So far McCain, Romney and (very recently) McConnell are about the only ones willing to stand up for their precious constitution in the face of Trump's antics.

I think they're simply vastly outnumbered and unable to act without significant reinforcement. The Washington Post reports that a request for National Guard support has been denied by the Defense Department, which is itself run by a new Trump appointee (Christopher Miller), after Trump fired the previous incumbent (Mark Esper)

You and I think this, surely a lot of others do, but so many Republicans seem in thrall to Trump and act as if compelled to support him and agree with his direction still. I was planning on tabulating who voted against today's election certification but that's been rather overtaken by events - for now.

Is it, in part, because the President has too much power for one person and that if that person is a little unhinged that we get what we've been seeing recently, leading up to today?

Will today's seditious events cause people to reappraise Trump? I'd hope so, but I'm not hopeful.

The US political system wasn't designed to have someone like Trump running the place. There's a centuries-old reliance on decency and respect of the democratic process which has looked pretty shonky in recent years.

This really is a sad reflection on the Republican party that they let this lunatic in.

This really is very very bad for democracy - long term. It was clear years ago that Trump was always making whatever promises people wanted to hear. But four years later there were not enough gullible people to believe his lies. But it is not over. Trump is peddling enough lies to enough believers that there are now a significant number of disaffected voters who are ready to give up on democracy. This is at great risk of descending into anarchy.

Will the republican party diffuse the situation by disowning this lunatic ?. Or is it too late ?.

What the Republican party need to think about is that in four years time most voters will be unable to consider the Republican party. If there is a democracy left then I wonder if the Republicans will be replaced by a new party that has more chance of competing for votes against the Democrats.
