Quite possibly, although one can never be certain. But merely having declared war or said that a strike is going to be made would cause diplomatic chaos. It is not a situation where Biden could get everything sorted out just by saying, “It wasn’t me, sir. It was Trump.”
If the action was against Iran they have demonstrated a clear understanding of US political manoeuvring in the past. The most pointed example was releasing the American hostages on Ronald Reagan's inauguration day despite the Carter administration having launched a military operation in Iran to try and free them.

I think the biggest danger is that Trump manages to goad Iran into making an attack themselves.
That would take quite some goading. Iran knows that instigating any action that can be directly linked back to the leadership is akin to signing their own death warrants. Hence why they sponsor terror groups/freedom fighters (take your pick) rather than engaging directly.

Why would Trump start a war. He was elected for among other things precisely because people feared Ms Clinton would do exactly that. Aside from a cluster of cruise missiles fired at a (known to be abandoned) base in Syria, he has been quite unique among recent presidents in not waging wars.

Well the theory is he wants to wreck Biden's term so Trump can come back in 2024. I think its fanciful though.

He's currently engaged in blowing up the Republican party and the American democratic process, would the some country on the other side of the world be a huge step from there?

I agree it's unlikely, but we'll see what happens on Tuesday.

I think the republicans will pick up one of the Senate seats, then Trump will recognised Taiwan as a free country, killing two birds with one stone.

I more meant with Congress confirming (or not!) the Electoral College results.

Watergate 2?

US President Donald Trump has been recorded telling Georgia's top election official to "find" enough votes to overturn the election result.

"I just want to find 11,780 votes," Mr Trump told Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in a recording released by the Washington Post.

Mr Raffensperger is heard replying that Georgia's results were correct.

Mr Biden won Georgia alongside other swing states, winning 306 electoral college votes to his Mr Trump's 232.

Since the 3 November vote, Mr Trump has been alleging widespread electoral fraud without providing any evidence.

He tweeted on Sunday that Mr Raffensperger had not given details of the fraud the president alleges. "He has no clue!" the president tweeted.

I've heard the full call. It should be astonishing.. but it's not, and nothing will be result from what he said.

Carl Bernstein thinks it's actually worse than Watergate and he's almost uniquely qualified to make that sort of judgment (Bob Woodward is also still active).

I can’t believe there won’t be legal consequences for T**** over this after 20/01. To ask for something impossible is one thing, but surely to threaten legal consequences with the power of the office of government behind you, is a blatant, BLATANT breach of the law. Is inciting crimes against democracy not a federal or state crime in the US?

I think I asked similar a while back (although this has taken things up to another level). I’m still not entirely sure though?

I believe inducing an officer of state to falsify election results is both a state and a federal crime.
Well that’s good news (another one to add to the pile hopefully).

If his goal was to actually win, yes. But if his aim is to cast doubt on the entire process one state would be enough.

Overturning the vote in Georgia would not be enough. What we don't know, of course, is whether he has approached any other officials and they have kept quiet or may even be surreptitiously carrying out some investigation, however minor, to throw doubt on a result. In addition to what we already knew (Trump would plumb new depths to stay in power), we now know that he blatantly doesn't care for his country, its democracy and its constitution, which should now be obvious to all but his most blinkered supporters; for the rest, it is time to put the placards away. We have also learnt that the Secretary of State of Georgia has put his country and state before himself, I would vote for him on the strength of that alone. I trust he and his family will be given adequate protection, he will have made too many enemies, most of whom have the right to bear arms. We already have one attorney saying that Pence should face a firing squad.

No. Let's be very clear, this NOT a storm in a teacup, it looks and smells like a prosecutable offence.

My guess, however, is that nothing will happen. If no-one acts on it once Trump's gone after Jan 20th then something has gone extremely wrong with the checks and balances of presidential power.

@Typhoon I've no doubt at all we're going to hear recordings from other states after the 20th has come and gone. As you point out Georgia alone wouldn't have been enough and other calls would surely have been received by governors and other officials in Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The next few months are going to be VERY interesting if like me you keep a close eye on US politics.

It is far more than a storm in a teacup when an incumbent US President misuses the power of the Office of President in a brazenly criminal attempt to overturn an election outcome that removes him. It is the most serious challenge to democracy since universal free voting was established (something that, in the case of women, was horrifyingly recent, post-WW2 for the majority of countries).

Biden has said that he's not going to direct an investigation of Trump, which a lot of people have taken to mean that the Orange One will get off scot free. What I understood him to mean is that he's not going to launch a politically-motivated investigation but rather that his Department of Justice is going to be free to investigate what they believe should be investigated. I suspect DJT is going to be close to the the top of their list (assuming he doesn't pardon himself).

That may happen and I hope it does - but I have a sneaking suspicion the State of New York already have their prosecutorial ducks in a row and are just waiting for DJT to become an ex-president.

Some of the investigations in New York are, as I understand it, at the federal level and therefore pardonable by a President. If Trump resigns Pence can pardon him, as happened for Nixon and Ford. But there are likely to be some state-level investigations that could result in non-pardonable charges, and even if Biden doesn't want to pursue anything I would imagine some politically ambitious Democratic prosecutor would fancy a crack at it.

Fine, provided the recordings still exist and haven't been overwritten/ are unlistenable/ mysteriously disappeared. The worry for these officials will be that Trump has a copy of the recordings; if he goes down, I suspect he will not want to go down alone, only his children may be safe so officials will need to decide whether to keep the recordings as evidence of what was said, or hope that Trump does not release his version (which may have paid a visit to the editing suite first). If there is a message for the Republicans here, it is that you need to move on; some, wisely, are deserting the sinking ship. Of course, where such recordings still exist, the question to officials should be 'why did you not disclose it' to some form of authority? This should be post #1438, I suspect there is enough to keep us going for quite a time yet!

I had assumed that Trump really knew he lost but was just blustering in order to sabotage Biden's presidency and help his own chances in 2024. Instead, it's clear that he's insane.
I am not sure he is insane, he has no respect for democracy, he would have been better placed being born in Turkey,Belarus, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Russia (or several similar countries) - even a country with a hereditary monarchy, which is what the Trump family effectively is; no wonder he gets on fairly well with 'Little Rocket Man'.

He's not insane, but he does appear to suffer from several recognisable psychological defects. Narcissism, sociopathy and Borderline Personality Disorder at the very least.

There's some sort of joke in there about Borderline Personality Disorder and The Wall. Time for a mini competition - Ready, Steady, Joke?
