How is that different to 153s and 158s? All of which have access in passenger areas.
Surely 2 pacers is better than a pacer and 153.

Isn’t it permitted in extreme circumstances when the alternative would be service cancellations? As long as something more suitable is provided at the earliest operational opportunity.

The safety of train crew is a must, there's no doubt about that. But not using pacers doesn't really make sense as people can still congregate in the vestibule of a 153 and 158.
Also 2 pacers provides much more space than a pacer and 153, and also more door access (middle and attached end). So social distancing should be easier. 2 pacers is also better social distancing wise than a single 150 whicj is what is often happening.
There should be a way to block off end doors for train crew safety, but still have them available in the event of an emergency.
Just seems inconsistent and unions once again flexing their muscles without any logic, with the passengers then suffering.

TfW have been doing that. The driving ends of Pacers have been taped off inside along the tip-up seats with big taped on X's on the windows of doors making clear the driving end doors are not for public use.

Even the 141s had a solid bar!

At a guess, its because 142s & 143s have only three doors per carriage in total, so taping off the cab ends means that carriage only has one door available for passengers and only if the platform is on the right side. This probably means pax are more likely to ignore/climb over the cordon.

What is ridiculous is where on the refurbished PRM-compliant 153s, the toilet/wheelchair access is blocked off most of the time!

This is the issue with the 142s going. City Line services are now single 153s.

See my own photo attached. In this case, it isn't blocked off but whilst I understand the need for conductors to be able to socially distance from passengers, they can do it from the opposite end or on another unit attached!

The city line is actually booked for 150s but seems to regularly be a single 153. The Shrewsbury-Crewe locals and Heart of wales is now booked single 153. The withdrawal of the majority of the 142s does seem to have caused a shortage of units, hopefully before the last ones go by the end of next week there will be an improvement in availability across the other classes. Lockdown and the engineering closures will relieve pressure for a few weeks, hopefully long enough to get some 769s going.

Yes, in fact the first City Line was a 150 this morning which I was surprised as I thought with the new restrictions in Wales it would definitely be a single 153. In fact last week they were using single non-PRM'd 153s (i.e. the ex-GA/EMT ones!).

There's nothing in that photo to indicate the area to be blocked off. Was there a notice or a Pacer-style chain out of shot? In any case, I'd like to see the headlines if a passenger (particularly one with a disability or young children) were denied access to a working toilet. I'm generally sympathetic to the railway unions and certainly have a distaste for some of the Thatcherite criticisms levelled at them, but they really don't do themselves many favours on the PR front.

142002, 142073 and 142074 have gone from Canton to Landore today pending withdrawal. I think that Sims the Scrap may not be ready to accept yet as there are 3 ex GWR 143s there waiting to go.

I don't have photos, but several times I have seen the toilet area taped off on a PRM 153. At least 5 different occasions.

I tweeted them about it and was told that it was operationally necessary.

only should be allowed to do that on a train with more than one prm toilet but why wouldnt you just tape off the side which isnt prm access if its 1 car i mean ok if a 153 and 150 together then thats acceptable but ah well off topic

Last workings for the three units which moved from Canton to Landore today - 142002, 073 and 074.
142002 off 2Y32 2244 Aberdare to Cardiff Central 19-12-20.
142073 off 2Y82 2206 Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff Central 18-12-20.
142074 off 2F32 2233 Penarth to Cardiff Central 19-12-20.

Also 143622 is moving Landore to Canton this evening.
Note: I have this one at Landore since 25-6-20 although have seen posts on Yahoo (io groups rather) suggesting it was in service during 9-20 (if anyone can confirm when it came back or went back there?)

Many Thanks :)

As noted above, these 3 arrived at Landore this morning for stabling, before they go to SIMS Newport :

IMG_20201221_112612.jpg
Nearest camera: 142 074, 073 in the middle & 002 at the rear.

They join 142 082 which has been at Landore since 08/10/20 and is going to SIMS in early January.

The driver who brought these 3 in did a slip move and returned at mid-day to Canton with 143 622. That unit had been stored at Landore since 25/06/20 in response to the above post.

143 604 is at Landore and will be going back to Canton soon to be put into service (The new lockdown may change that).

All TfW Class 142's will be withdrawn by 31/12/20. The 143's remaining in service until April, at the earliest.

Almost half of the 153s are not PRM compliant. If they have to be attached to a modified unit from next year then the unit problem will get worse. If you have three non PRM units on Canton but nothing to pair them with, they will be useless.

Of which I'm aware, but I was under the impression that the PRM-compliant 153s would work with Pacers and the non-PRM 153s would work with 150s or 158s. I guess it ultimately comes down to units being in the right place at the right time but appreciate that is difficult at the moment.

As I said in the previous post, that particular picture doesn't show the area blocked off, but shows where the yellow tape is pulled across, blocking off the toilet and wheelchair/buggy area. I do have a photo of it in action somewhere but I've got more than 6,000 photos on my phone.

Could somebody clarify if 142072, 075, and 077 have now been withdrawn ready for scrap?
142075 is still in service (or was yesterday). I'll let you know if it's out today as I work right by Cathays station.

142072 hasnt been used for a while and is meant to be Sims Newport bound 142075 is working today with a 150, 077 is probably gone too as not worked for a bit.
Aside from 075, it looks as if the only other 142 out is 142006

Thanks for that. I don't suppose you (or anyone else?) knows which diagrams they're on?

Struggling to get the actual diagrams as theyre not loading but 142006 is currently at Bargoed with 153310 waiting to work 2P60 10:46 to Penarth.
075 is currently working 2M09 9:24 Barry Island to Merthyr then works 2Y61 11:06 back to Barry Island if that helps

Edit:
They are on diagrams 3 and 6 from the tfw pacer allocation thread in the allocations section
142006 swapping out at Cardiff so not sure whats replacing it

Does anyone know if any of the TFW 142s are likely to be preserved? Or are they all likely to get sent to Sims in Newport for scrap? Thanks

No news of any up until now. I think that organisations who wanted them grabbed the Northern ones which became available to them first

I'm guessing they're probably not wanted because none of them have bus bench seats.
