Anyone else feel like they've been hit so many times that they are now desensitised to it?

I did think that it couldn’t get much worse. But it has. I had already become hardened to it at the start of the week but it has just got so much worse.

I feel like I've been hit particularly hard this afternoon. I can cope with the Tier 4 restrictions, I think. But Christmas is what's kept me going through the last few dark, cold, miserable months. Now I have time off work and absolutely nothing to do.

Genuine question - what's in it for Boris, Whitty etc. in prolonging the controlling as long as possible? I would have thought they too would be hoping for something like normality to return.

Personally I have not taken part in a protest since I was a teenager and Tony Blair decided to go to war with Iraq. But if there is a protest arranged locally I will be there. I hope it is not hijacked by 5G/Anti-Vax idiots though.

That's the only thing that puts me off going to protests over this. As for the vaccine, I'm certainly not Anti Vax, but won't be touching the Covid vaccine with a bargepole for some years yet, not that I'll probably have the choice anyway as I'm far down the priority list. I don't believe it's been effectively tested enough yet to determine any long term side effects-though that might not be as much of an issue by the time I'm eligible.

The trouble with that is it’s easy for his efforts to be batted away with “well he would say that, he owns a pub chain”. It needs someone without such a vested interest.

There was a delight on the news just now, saying that this new strain spreads even with social distancing. Are they saying it’s in the air or water or something?! And if so then what’s the point of wearing a mask?

And if they’re so worried about this new strain spreading, perhaps Boris might have been at Euston or King’s Cross these last two days. Has he been, he’s have seen quite a few people boarding Intercity trains to other parts of Britain. I smell a rat with this, they’ve been spooked by SAGE, and floating the new strain is the way to get round the problem of Christmas.

Im not quite with you on this but my view is Witty and others have been banging on about needing tighter restrictions over Xmas and Boris has not wanted to do this so they cook up the virus has mutated and seeded that earlier in the week to get it on the radar then raise the stakes last night and they get the Xmas restrictions they wanted all the time imposed.

Hopefully this will be the point that will spark mass civil disobedience. A colleague of mine flew over to Northern Ireland with his partner yesterday (from a Tier 3) to spend Christmas with their families. I somehow doubt they'll fly back home now because He Who Must Be Obeyed says you can only mix on the 25th.

Certainly the vibe from passengers on trains around Norfolk this evening is not positive. I've heard a four letter word beginning with C being thrown around to describe our leader Boris. (The one ending in T, for the record). And this is an area staying in Tier 2.

I'm not local, I'm on a weekend away from oop nowf, one of the few tier 2 places. Though it wouldn't surprise me if when the London tier review comes on the 23rd the vast majority of the country gets put in tier 4.

Tier 4 is essentially the same as the last lockdown, so I expect they'll just use it to impose a nationwide or most of the country lockdown by just raising everywhere, or most places. Probably by a misuse of emergency powers if they can get away with it.

The commons isn't isn't sitting again until 7th January, so chances are they'll try to push something through before then.

For Boris it's to make sure the Conservatives aren't unelectable for decades as he needs to keep up the fear that killing the economy and wrecking voters' mental health is worth it.

For the other two, well Vallence has shares in vaccine companies doesn't he? And I'm sure Whitty is being paid handsomely to be an advisor.

The fact that alternative scientified views are not even allowed to be debated says a lot.

I’m hearing rumours of a return to “key workers only” on transport. That would tie in with the media hints yesterday regarding commuting. Funny how the emergency meeting was today, yet yesterday’s newspapers seemed to have a surprisingly accurate crystal ball...

I feel like I've been hit particularly hard this afternoon. I can cope with the Tier 4 restrictions, I think. But Christmas is what's kept me going through the last few dark, cold, miserable months. Now I have time off work and absolutely nothing to do.

What bugs me with it all is not so much the restrictions - I can live with them for a time-defined period albeit I feel time on this planet is being robbed from me - but the thought of what longer term ruin this is all doing. I am properly fearful for what we are going to have left at the end of all this, especially as the current crop of politicians seem to have no appreciation of this - the limit of the mentality is Pinocchio and the Sunak eat out offer (waste of money).

I don’t know what the right call should have been (it depends on your success criteria...), but it could have been communicated a lot better!

If the be all and end all is absolute case rate, it was always going to rise if you opened things up before Christmas - so surely the situation was foreseeable rather than having to reverse policy at the last minute so as to cause almost maximum disruption to the public.

The cynic in me really does wonder if something is or isn’t going on with brexit and scrutiny isn’t welcomed. The strength of feeling (I assume the general public will be unhappy...) is such that nothing else is going to make the news.

I honestly think all these politicians are actually enjoying the power. The devolved government actually have some power over their populations and are also determined to use it.

I think Boris Johnson has taken advantage of the fact the parliament is not sitting at the moment, and won't be until the first week in January.

By the time parliament returns, if the leaks story in The Telegraph are to be believed, the Oxford vaccine will have been approved for use in the UK, and the vaccine program will be just getting going. So Boris will have something with which to deflect the **** that is most definitely going to hit the fan when MPs return.

The tier system in England comes up for renewal at the end of January, and Boris Johnson needs to be able to show MPs a route out of all this nonsense if he wants to get the regulations renewed.
