Will people please STOP saying that Christmas might be cancelled.

CHRISTMAS WILL NOT BE CANCELLED. DECEMBER 25 WILL STILL BE CHRISTMAS DAY.

Celebrations might be different, but the date and its significance will not change.

But they will stop us celebrating it, in my case by stopping me going to church.

The only significance to the majority of the country is that it's a time when they meet up with extended families - and therefore may effectively be cancelled. What are they 'celebrating' without that? Most people no longer believe ridiculous stories about a baby born to a virgin and wise men following a star...

Oh god not that old chestnut again

You just don't like Whitty and Vallance because they say stuff you don't want too hear. They are realists, they know what they are talking about and I rather listen to them than Boris Johnson who you probably like because he gives you (false) hope. The 4000 deaths a day could perhaps be presented better but they showed that outcome(and it was NOT a prediction) if nothing was done.

This is a serious situation we are seeing in the south and east and also Wales where cases are out of control, Xmas should of been cancelled weeks ago, we should not of got worked up over one poxy day and now it's the worst case scenario where the PM is effectively cancelling Xmas just under a week until Xmas day and after all the planning about Xmas bubbles nonsense.

Start listening to Whitty and Vallence, they are the guys who do talk sence even if they give news you don't want to hear.
No they are not realists, this isn't the plague or smallpox. None of their figures have ever come close to being realistic so afraid they have little credibility. You carry on believing it if you want to and continue with the one horse race. A number of us have realised long ago all these measures were over the top and causing harm elsewhere. The virus us not the only show in town.

What proportion will just ignore any rule changes and carry on with what they are intending to do? I suspect it'll be a lot!

Of course some willl ignore the rules but I like to think there be alot of people in the most heavily affected areas sit there and think, is it worth risking my family's health for one day? There be plenty of years of Christmas ahead and surely one year without it won't hurt.

The problem is, our PM decided to lay plans for Xmas in November and before lockdown finished despite heading into the cold and flu season and the time where the scientists say COVID could be at its most strongest. Now it has bite him in the backside pretty badly. He should of waited and as soon as the cases started to rise, he should of strongly advised against any travelling for Xmas not the kind of encouraging it but we don't want you to do it approach.

To a lot of people Christmas means being with family. That is being cancelled.

With all due respect, I rather listen to the scientists than some members of the forum claiming they know better than the scientists and think its all OTT.

Let's hope we can get on top of this outbreak down in the south and east and in Wales but the rates the numbers have went up this week in those areas is scary and strong action has to be taken. No point of dressing it up, this is getting critical and not just in the case numbers but hospital admissions also.

As I said:

"CHRISTMAS WILL NOT BE CANCELLED. Celebrations might be different ... "
What like no celebrations, especially those of us who live on our own?

An ever-decreasing number, I would suggest from observations when out and about - compliance with all rules is decreasing, and introducing new rules which are really going to annoy some people is only likely to increase non-compliance.

I am a scientist so do have a little knowledge. Really you do need to look more deeply into this than take figures at face value. We've survived far worst in the past. The only people dressing this up are Whitty and co and those that hang on their words.

So why do you religiously follow what Whitty, etc, say, as opposed to other scientists who think it's all OTT (and who, incidentally, have in many cases proved far better at preductions than the government's crystal-ball gazers)

But the point is that Christmas is not being cancelled. The means by which some people wish to celebrate may have be changed.

Christmas does not have just one meaning in practice - I know that Christians like to claim ownership of it, but in reality it originated as, and is now, a midwinter festival which means differnet things to different people.

Fascinating. You use the word 'religiously' in the context of Professor Whitty, but not to refer to Christmas.

Ah well. As a far greater man than I once said "... some fell on stony ground..."

"The Scientists" are not so homogeneous group with a single view point. Many scientists are critical of the measures being taken. Perhaps you should say you trust SAGE instead.

Christmas to me means going to church and going down the pub.

Maybe that's part of the problem, complacency sets in and people are transmitting it without realising it. Not helped when you have a prime minister saying in the summer everything could be back to normal by xmas(even though the scientists kept saying a second wave was possible) and now saying everything could be back to normal by Easter which now looks on rocky ground with the furlough scheme being extended yet again.

Realists? Oh please, get a grip. Millions of people face a uncertain future even though we have a sodding vaccine and you call these twits realists. Quite literally wars have been started for less. And as for news you don't want to hear, just wait until the next financial review. Rumours are already spreading that the pay rise promised to healthcare staff may be "delayed". Combined with the pay freeze for the rest of the public sector this points to one conclusion, there are going to be some very serious & far reaching cutbacks soon. Let's see if you can be as dismissive about those when they kick in, especially when the anger of millions spills over.

Yes it will. Christmas is a time when families who often live significant distances apart often get together to bond. Many, including mine will not be able to this year thanks to the growing hysteria of a bunch of soppy middle aged people who have suddenly rediscovered the long know fact that we are not immortal.

Quite frankly these two posts have eroded my faith in humanity to the point I actually wouldn't give a toss if Trump hit the big red button to end all things. Compassion for humanity is dead. Well done!

I heard a theory mooted on Sky today that the new strain may not be any different, but transmission is up due to all the talk of vaccines, which is reducing compliance with the rules.

Yep, I do - it seems appropriate in this case as it shows a level of unquestioning faith.

I assume the reference to the parable of the sower is that usual christian thing of patronising anyone who doesn't share their beliefs...

Not necessarily, it's a virus and it doesn't understand human rules. We had some cases at work amongst the people who follow the rules to the letter.

Oh I dread to think of the financial implications of this but if we went with the do nothing route, Boris will be branded as a selfish killer from the press and he would be out of his job by now. Action had to be taken way back in March and action has to be taken yet again and this time a PROPER March style lockdown not the half hearted nonsense we had in November.

it's a seasonal respiratory virus. It is going to spread, simple as that. There is no correlation between measures taken to try to stop it, and what acutally happens - e.g. some of the countries with the most paranoid restrictions (e.g. UK, Italy) are still seeing the worst spread.

Maybe, but they are not the voice of the Government - the science should be balanced against other aspects such as the economy, people's mental health, general health (cancer diagnosis etc) etc. Whitty and Valance's view are but a small part of the wider picture

Because that was so effective in stopping the virus...

Of course, the March lockdown moving towards summer when respiratory ailments tend to decline could have been nothing to do with the "success" of the lockdown...

Not forgetting that while it may have appeared to have a short term effect, that's not necessarily causation as we were heading out of the respiratory virus season anyway.

The November lockdown had much lower compliance, but the fact that we are now well into the next respiratory virus season is also likely to be significant - i.e. it may well have had little effect no matter how high the compliance.

Yes - and to a lot of people Christmas means being down the pub.

But the point is that Christmas is not being cancelled. The means by which some people wish to celebrate may have be changed.

I live on my own. I've seen my family only three times since March, and not at all since September. Some weeks my interaction with other humans is limited to talking to the local shopkeeper or the postman.

How do you suggest I celebrate Christmas, when I will be at home, on my own, as I have been for most of the other days this year.

I know rules have to be made on a macro level, but I have deliberately been isolating for the last few days so that by next Thursday I will post virtually no risk to my mum.
