Do GWR Traincrew earn commission on the ticket sales? This could be quite a nice little earner. I have a family member who works for GWR but in the Westcountry and works for the revenue department (but as a Ticket Examiner not Revenue Protection Inspector who don't get commission) and he used to earn quite substantial amounts of commission on ticket sales.

As I understand yes, they do, but I'm not sure if it is a lot of money.

In normal service, Doors plus customer service. Patrol length of train as a security check, answer customer questions , give timetable and connection advice (all guards/com guards provided with a company phone . Assist mobility impaired passengers deploying ramp if required (wheelchairs etc)



I'm sure a swr guard can add to the list.

I believe it’s something like 1% below £1,000 and then 5% above that. Some staff made numbers not too dissimilar from the base salary!
This was in the west though, so Eastern staff may be on different contracts.

5% for swr commercial, tickets aren't everything - don't chase it. You'll only cause issues for yourself.

Guildford and Woking both seemed like pleasant places to be a guard. Woking has more variety of routes but the workings there are a little bit more intense. Guildford the work is more easy going but most of the time as a non-commercial you'll be rolling back and forth via Epsom or Cobham.

Both Guildford and Woking depots are split between 'Guard' and 'Commercial Guard'. If the adverts says 'Guard', then it is for the non-commercial role. These are paid less than their commercial colleagues, but you sign the same routes which allows you to cover 'commercial jobs' when needed, so you will still get the odd trip to the seaside. As a Guard your role entails door operation and 'patrolling' your trains offering help and assistance (journey queries, wheelchair ramps etc). The Commercial Guard role then adds having a ticket machine, as well as the pay rise and 5% (I think is the figure) commission. Once employed as a non-commercial Guard, you'll have the opportunity to apply for the Commercial Guard role as and when positions become available in the future. As for what the future holds, who knows. It's gone quiet, but that's more thanks to the pandemic than anything else I think!

Yes we do , 1% for the first £1000 taken then 5% after that on sales , you don’t get anything for doing TODs ( pre purchase tickets ) that we can issue on the machines ! Commission has pretty my dried up now with COVID-19 as most people have qr codes , some of our turns we regularly took £600-£700 now you are lucky to take £150 . On a good month I used to take £300 in commission home last month was £30

I understand Woking has quite a few vacancies. As for Guildford, I will have a dig tomorrow. Due to Covid, all training courses for guards were suspended in March. Several guards have left since, some going up to driver, others retired.

I also have a Teams interview for Woking guard this week.
