Would be the Haymarket ones but I only saw 170s when I went on that route a few weeks back.
It was a couple of years ago when I last travelled that route last; I remember it being entirely 158s. I imagine the allocations have since changed, now that some of the 158s have gone down to Northern and the 385s and HSTs have come in.

Everyone complains about seats not lining up with the windows, so they change it. Now everyone complaints they are cramped. They can't win.

As built, all Class 158 seats line up with the windows, in a very clever manner, by alternating airline seats (which require less legroom) with table seats (which require more, so get the window plus both pillars). Every TOC that has mucked with that layout has made things worse for no good reason (other than priority seats requiring a bit of a tweak at one end, achievable by reducing the number of tables by 1).

You can just about get away with it with the Grammer IC3000 because it's more upright and has a thinner back than the original seat. The Richmond seats (an awful seat) in the Haymarket units have really thick backs, so having table bays adjacent to each other (and thus less pitch) means the spacing is unacceptably tight. Northern's ironing boards are in pretty much the original layout so have gallons of space!

Which of the two variants is the one found on the Waverley route from Edinburgh to Tweedbank? I'd assume the Richmond variant?

I'd expect so - it's Grammer in the Inverness units and Richmond (awful seats, one of the worst in my view, especially once the poor quality sprung base eventually collapses, as it inevitably will) on the others.

I think the Grammar seats in the Inverness 158's are more comfortable than the GWR HST's unless Scotrail softened them when they reupholsted them.
