It's not the side destination screens - those are in the windows (and in the leading car is directly below one of the lights)

I would hazard a guess at them being de-icing lights
I notice there seems to be four altogether along the length of the two cars, but they aren’t in the same positions on the individual cars; so that suggests they might have different purposes?

I think the ones on the inner ends of the vehicle are standard orange bodyside indicator lights to indicate loss of interlock on that vehicle - these are also present on the 230s. However, the 230s also have these additional lights, so it seems unlikely to be deicing lights

I would guess it's a cooling fan (and inverter to run it) for the traction electronics
How come it's only present on the front vehicle? It also honestly sounds like the fan is either rubbing on something, or not mounted correctly. That's the sort noise you expect from a computer fan sitting loose in a plastic holder, not a high powered industrial cooling fan!

Probably hit the nail on the head there.

I doubt you'll see a better height comparison than this, should be interesting to see how the views change with the higher windows:

Nope, they are still working on 007 and a month is too long to give up.
It is certainly quite a difference in size and will be great to see once it makes it way through the tunnels and on the pier.

How do these new units compare in size to the stock operated by the steam railway?

I suspect it'll all go for scrap, but it won't be a major loss - it's been very heavily altered, and London Underground have a heritage unit of 1938 Stock in authentic and absolutely pristine condition, so the trains are represented in preservation already.
That’s my thinking too.
A cab might be saved though.

Rumour has it 007 may be out in traffic by teatime today... I’m sure our island correspondent will update us.

Well, it appeared on test at about 17:00 yesterday, running to Pier Head (seen courtesy of the Railcam at Esplanade) and back, noticeable for a non-stop run through Esplanade station in both directions.

Do we know if the 484s have the additional packing in the suspension, to raise the ride height compared to when they ran on LU?

Gauging was another issue that had to be resolved before D78 stock could run on the main line. This required the body height of the unit to be lifted by 73 mm, which was achieved through the use of a suspension rubber on the bogie centre pivot and on the vertical dampers.

- quote from https://railengineer.co.uk/what-next-for-vivarail/

I would have thought they'd want to avoid it given the height restrictions, but it may be necessary to get enough space under the floor for the new traction package and engine/battery rafts.

There was (and should still be) packers between the secondaries and the body to level the ride height based on wheel wear. And unless the secondary suspension has been changed (which given conversations I've had with people at Vivarail, it won't have been), it will still be the same ride height.

Reading that quote would however lead me to believe otherwise. But... There is no suspension rubber in the centre pin, probably a typical misunderstanding of railway press (there is plenty out there). The centre pin can be raised by replacing the chevrons, and then the rubber blobs replaced with bigger ones to raise the height by that kind of level.
The packers used previously would only give you between 20 and 30mm difference on ride height.

Does anyone know if a 484 has been to the pier head yet? I’m supposing it could happen overnight?

The Railcam people have webcams pointing at Esplanade station, which Pier Head trains have to go through, and another at Pier Head itself, which normally concentrates on shipping/ferries, but at night focuses on Pier Head station in case a 484 appears. So far nobody has reported seeing one there, but you can be certain that nobody is going to hang about at Pier Head station at night, in December, to spot one in person.

Thanks, I see they also put recorded video highlights up as well as the live stream, so they’re also likely to do that when they cover it sooner or later anyway...

Just seen 484001 fly through Lake at a good clip on it's third(?) St Johns-Shanklin trip today, no obvious body roll or swaying as it passed. James has captured an earlier run near Swanmore:

Not yet, rest assured it won't be missed with multiple webcams on the case. There's talk of waiting for paperwork, perhaps they've not got the gauging signed off yet?

I note from this that the carriages carry Isle of Wight series/style numbers of 131 and 231 (following on from the '38 stock series).

I wonder whether these are the official car numbers or an abbreviation of the current six digit style?

I do wonder whether effort will be made to rail the units up 'same way around' for ease in future on depot, that being said I'm not aware if there are any real differences between the two coaches (saying that, I can't see there being 2 compressors on one unit!)

Post #245, back in May, had also quoted the latest P5 rolling stock book listing them as 131-135 and 231-235.

Makes one also wonder whether they are "handed" in the LUL tradition of A and D end cars? If so, then delivering them the same way round will be essential for future 4 car operation!

As I haven’t seen it posted anywhere else as yet, I can confirm that 007 re-entered service this morning, and is just on the final run of the day up to Pier Head.

The interior looks particularly fantastic and should give a much better image for the last few weeks. Well done to SWR for getting the unit functional.

007 at Shanklin earlier on. https://twitter.com/beingjarley/status/1337450456071680001?s=21

It looked bright and shiny in the sun at Esplanade this afternoon.

I recall a couple of people asked about original D78 car numbers, so here they are. Thanks to wnxx forum for the information.
.
484001 - 131 (7086) + 231 (7011)
484002 - 132 (7068) + 232 (7002)
484003 - 133 (7051) + 233 (7083)
484004 - 134 (7074) + 234 (7111)
484005 - 135 (7124) + 235 (7093)

It is notable that A ends and D ends are mixed although there are 5 of each. Can these trains couple A-A and D-D as well as A-D?

I can confirm 007 does look really nice, all the bits on show at rail level also look brand new
When companies restore trains to this standard it makes one wonder why they can't keep them !
Does anyone know what the long term plans for this unit are?
We had a ride down from Esplanade to Shanklin yesterday morning , bus around the island and and then a full out and return in the dark on the penultimate.
My only concern will be the utter chaos on the last day as I suspect many people will be disappointed at not being able to board

Posts in the Preservation forum suggest that all the recently used sets will go into preservation. Likely disposition will be 006 to Epping - Ongar, 007 to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, and 008 to another local group.
